Wanted Grosses 18 Crore Nett Over First Weekend

Monday 21st September 2009 10.30 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Wanted grossed around 18 crore nett over its first weekend in India. The performance was excellent in single screens all over especially Bihar and CP Berar where business was huge. The multiplexes did show a improvement in collections on Saturday and Sunday but the jump was ot huge.

Wanted should emerge a Semi Hit to Hit film mainly on the strength of Salman Khan's star power. Monday is a holiday and Eid festivities will end which will mean a jump in collections in muslim centres especially in action loving areas like UP, Bihar and Nizam. The first week is likely to end up in the 30 crore nett region which is a good result as it has been sold at fair prices in most circuits.

The underperformance at metro multiplexes will be a dampener on its overall business but it was sort of expected that metro multiplexes will have lower collections as the film has been in the making for a longtime which gives its a dated look.

Wanted may end Salman's 2-yr flop run
Ashish Sinha / New Delhi September 22, 2009, 0:14 IST

Generates about Rs 20 cr in first weekend at the box office

After half a dozen flop films over nearly two years, Bollywood actor Salman Khan has finally tasted commercial success with his latest action flick, Wanted, emerging top grosser this weekend, generating around Rs 17-19 crore in domestic box office collections.

Khan's previous commercially successful film was Partner, released two years earlier.

Trade pundits expect Wanted, a remake of a South Indian film, to generate around Rs 28-30 crore in its first week collections. And say it may recover its costs by the end of four weeks. (The cost of making and promoting it is estimated at Rs 40-45 crore). This will end a two-year flop run for Salman ' Yuvraaj, Hello, Heroes, God Tussi Great Ho and Saawaryia, among others.

Salman has been around in the Bollywood for 30 years now and worked in around 85 films, including two dozen commercial hit films. After Wanted, Salman has two important releases lined up in Main Aur Mrs Khanna and London Dreams, both slated for release next month.

Wanted generated high collections during the weekend despite competition from another new release from the Yashraj banner, Dil Bole Hadippa!, featuring Rani Mukherjee and Shahid Kapoor. It generated collections of less than Rs 14 crore, even as both the films were released on September 18.

"Because of a long weekend holiday, including the Id holiday today, Wanted is seeing occupancy levels of around 70-75 per cent. Salman's charisma is driving audiences to both multiplexes and single-screen theatres, where the film has seen over 90 per cent occupancy," says Devang Sampat, senior vice president, Cinemax, a leading multiplex chain.

But film trade analyst Komal Nahata is not impressed yet. "Only because there is a long weekend is it doing well? I don't think it will recover its cost, as from next Friday onwards a slew of interesting films are slated to hit the theatres."

After a spate of legal controversies, Khan is now in the news for various positive reasons. Apart from the second season of his television reality show, 10 Ka Dum, doing well on Sony TV, Khan has expressed interest in bidding for a cricket team in the Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament next year. He is also currently the brand ambassador of All India Football Federation.

Can brand endorsement deals be far away? "I don't know why celebrity management firms do not approach Salman. His charisma and fan following is no less than the other Khans, Aamir and Shah Rukh, but he makes less than 10-12 per cent of what they make every year in brand endorsement deals," says a senior executive of a leading sports and celebrity management firm.

Currently Salman only endorses Chlor-mint, a mint brand from Perfetti India. But, some years earlier, he had a slew of brand endorsement deals, including those with Thums Up, Dollar undergarments, Red Tape Shoes and Mayur Suitings, among others.

Wanted creates History on Eid
http://www.boxofficeindia.com/npages.ph ... &nCat=news

Wanted created history on Eid by recording the highest collections ever on a Monday. Wanted grossed a huge 7.25 crore nett on Monday which is higher than what Ghajini did on its first Monday. But it must be noted that the Ghajini Monday was not a holiday.

The four day nett business of Wanted is now around 25.25 crore nett and 35 crore nett first week is on the cards and it could even go higher depending what happens today.

Wanted had underperformed in parts over the first two days but its business on Eid holiday Monday means the film is a sure hit and if it can sustain from here on it could emerge a Super Hit or better.

A hit for Salman, a miss for Rani

September 21, 2009 18:39 IST

Finally, Salman Khan can let out a sigh of relief, as his movie Wanted is a hit with movie goers.

Rani Mukherji ], on the other hand, was not so lucky as her film Dil Bole Hadippa had a weak opening, and did not improve much even on Eid day.

Note: Films are ranked according to their release dates. The thumbs ups and downs reflect rediff's views.

ImageSalman aces.

ImageTacky scenes.

Taran Adarsh :

Had a bountiful weekend. Single screens are fantastic, while multiplexes, which started on a slow note, picked up on Saturday and Sunday. Monday [Eid] saw a big jump in business.
👏

U.S. collections for first weekend: $217,432 http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=wanted09.htm This is a little over 1 crore. I don't think it includes the Canadian collections.

U.K. first weekend: 69,399 http://movies.nytimes.com/indexes/2009/09/21/movies/boxoffice/weekend_uk/index.html This will be a little under 1 crore, I think.

Nothing great as expected , it being an action film.
