We had real cheap and backward audience back then in India. They loved vulgarity, cheap comedy and tried and tested stories in the likes of Beta, Raja Hindustani etc. Theatres were in bd shape.. mutiplex culture was not there. Educated people prefered watching movies on videos.
Lamhe is a class, the gem of Indian cinema. If it didn't do well in India, its the fault of Indians and our leteracy rate of 58%.
Sridevi won 3 best actress awards for Lamhe including the prestigious International Film Academy's Best Actress Award and the other two being Sunday Observer and Filmfare.

Indian audience are still "cheap". That is why movies like Kambakt ishq are super hits. There were always good movies in the past if you looked for them, it is not some new trend that just started up. The only difference is that with new technology people are able to discuss movies that are doomed at box office.
And it is not just indian audience. Even hollywood audience prefer "cheap" rom-coms over anything substantial. Recent box-office hit examples: the hangover, He's just not that into you, etc.

Oh back on the topic, I love Lamhe too. But Anil's behavior towards Sridevi's character always bothered me till this day.
