Oiiii Roxy interesting review on the movie. I can't add anything about the movie, as I have not seen it. Actually come to think of it, I can't even seem to remember the last new hindi film that I saw this year. Well there weren't many out this year to begin with.

Ok back to the topic, I completely agree that the desi public do tend to hail a film with an important issue as a great film, even if the movie in itself was nothing remarkable. But I think one reason behind it are the critics, who seem to hail any movie with a different subject, or an important issue as an amazing movie. Another thing is that audiences love to watch movies which are presented in an appealing, glossy manner, and if they deal with an issue like terrorism...voila the producers have a winner in their hand. People are all praise for that movie, because it had such a good message etc etc...hence movies like Newyork work. Whereas movies that might deal with a similar subject in a non-glamourised way or without popular actors, might be better technically but still not get that much praise or awards.

For instance if A wednesday had big names attached to it, it most probably would have won all the awards this year. But it didn't, even though it was the best made movie of last year. TZP managed to get many awards, even though Aamir does not attend awards...this is because Aamir is a big and popular name in the industry.

With regards to TZP and Black, I did not like Black at all. But thats my personal opinion about the movie, there was nothing path breaking. TZP was a decent attempt. Hindi movies love to over dramatise and exaggerate any subject they work it; it stands true for everything. Though its not a bad thing always, but in certain issues it should be avoided.

Anyway, I'll let you know my thoughts when and if I watch Newyork, at the moment I am just enjoying rewatching old Hindi classics..the golden days...*sigh*

But I think one reason behind it are the critics, who seem to hail any movie with a different subject, or an important issue as an amazing movie. I don't think that Indian moviegoers, aka the masses, pay much heed to critics. I mean, we have Critics Choice Awards at the Filmfare, and these awards go to movies that are completely unheard of. I do think that most critics in India are psuedo intellects, judging a film by it's face value only. 'Well Johda Akbar has to be a good movie, because Ashu is at the helm, and uh, it's about history?!?' Another thing is that audiences love to watch movies which are presented in an appealing, glossy manner, and if they deal with an issue like terrorism...voila the producers have a winner in their hand. People are all praise for that movie, because it had such a good message etc etc...hence movies like Newyork work. Ditto with everything you said here, and as Sanam already pointed out, people love melodrama! Whereas movies that might deal with a similar subject in a non-glamourised way or without popular actors, might be better technically but still not get that much praise or awards.

TZP managed to get many awards, even though Aamir does not attend awards...this is because Aamir is a big and popular name in the industry. Had A Wednesday starred Shahrukh Khan, it would have been hailed the best thing since sliced bread. Either that, or if A Wednesday was in the Oscar shortrun. Everyone wants to jump on a successful bandwagon.

I'm not going to do a full review here again, I'm just going to point out why I liked the film as a whole. Now, I'm not aware of the technical aspects so I won't exactly be talking about them here.
To answer your question as to whether I liked it because it tackles a sensitive issue or because the film's execution was good. Let's just say that I liked the film as a whole. Yes, it deals with a delicate issue but that's not the only reason for it's success. I have come across people saying that NY delivers a very strong message. I disagree vehemently. The moment you look for the reason NY delivers, you will not only loath it, but also deem it to be self-contradicting. Eg - Considering NY to be entangled in a confusion created by it's own direction that it supports and defies the Patriot Act at the same time. I'd like to consider them as two different perspectives unless stated by the same person.
It does not deliver any political or social message on terrorism or the US. The explores both sides of terrorism and offers a vague picture on the issue. Ofcourse, some people might disagree.
NY is not about 9/11. It's about the austere ambience that prevails across US after 9/11. It's a reflective film about three friends and how it affects them. Coming to the direction, I do agree that sometimes it looks like a documentry, and does get slow at times, but apart from that, I don't have any other qualms with the direction. I don't think that the director wanted us to sympathize with the characters, it would become totally one-dimensional in that case.
IMHO, NY was a great film and yes, not without certain inconsistencies, but miniscule enough to be ignored.

It is a given that the Bollywood formula is mostly a fantasy genre of film-making. However, it is insulting to ones intelligence, when it transposes this formula onto serious issues like 9/11. Such issues demand realism, deliberate critical and intelligent political commentary and pain streaking research, which Bollywood really can't do.

With regards to NY, there were a lot of political inconsistancies, and I do agree with you, I rather have them attempt to show their local or regional issues in India. Slumdog made an attempt, and people absolutely loved it.

Which brings me back to the point of this topic. When Slumdog first came out, no one gave a damn about the film. Early reviews suggested that Indians were angered over the way that India was depicted. As soon as Oscar buzz was built around SDM, everyone jumped on the bandwagon and hailed the film as the best thing since sliced bread. And this is what I deduced from most of the comments circulating IF and the internet; SDM was loved, not because it was a great movie, but because it dealt with important issues, and it was India's vessle to the Oscars.

I have not watched NY and will not do it either. The idea of 9/11 coming from Bollywood sickens me. Please leave 9/11 to America. When slumdog was made Indians didn't like it because it shows real us. But NY gets praise because it is not about us. There is absolutely nothing new in there. Some of here and there and whoa la we have a serious cinema here. We used to have good movies when Smita Patil was alive but no more.I can't tell you how many times each story of Dil Chahta Hai has been repeated in movies and they were hits. Bollywood movies are insult to my intelligence and intellectuality and I don't watch except really good old ones.

*steps into bollywood forum..right foot first..after kicking that vessel of rice*

Hmm ROXXYy

havent u observed the general trend that IF the story ahs a remote connection to a sensitive issue, it MUST be praised no matter what!

ANy 9/11 movie no matter what the quality is must be praised because it is sensitive. SO are a lot of classified movies in any category!

Im yet to see NY and wont comment about the movie yet! but topic wise true!

Anything that deals with a sensitive issue is IMPORTANT! disagree and u go to hell😛

WOnder of WOnders I am seeing another eprson who doesnt like Black! I pretty much got pulled into pieces when I said Black overdramatised the treatment of the subject bordering ill-ttreatment. This is not how it happens! TZP was meant to be tear jerker! NO LESS! It was a good movie and I would say the director knew how the bollywood audience responds to the idea and he actually pulled the right strings in the right order!

The Movie Black took itself too seriously! It had to be good becuse you are talking about a girl who is blind dead and mute! Talk anything about teh quality and u are an insensitive animal!

I seriously advise you to watch some of the movies with the ladies who are indeed handicapped but lead brave lives and are very well equipped enough to have people bowled over by them! "Mozhi" is one!

think most hindi movies fail in this respect. Characters with layers, characters with shades of grey, characters who battle with their own angels and demons...are never portrayed well on screen...mostly it's black and white that is well done. So I am not surprised if that has happened with this movie. Anyways I haven't seen it so I won't comment on the movie itself.

Great thread! Finally some good discussion! 😃
