KAMBAKKHT ISHQ is Bollywood of the 90s ('leave your brains behind', 'where's the script dude?' kind of stuff) with the gloss, glamour and technical expertise afforded of the current scenario. Lot's of Tashan!
It is a platform for Akshay to yet again prove his 'stunt status', enacting a role of a stuntman in Hollywood and also his love for buffoonery. For a role, he plays a MCP of the highest order. Opposing him is Kareena Kapoor playing Bebo (now she even has a song to her name), who plays an even bigger WCB (guess what it means?) if there was ever a term like that. Together they meet in a most bizarre situation and from then on, go on meeting to set up comic, and an even a bizarre situation where Akshay is operated upon by her and is left with a watch in his belly. An auditorium full of people can hear the hourly alarm ring from deep within his guts!
To support the two in their quest to prove 'I'm bigger than you' is Vindoo Dara Singh, Aftab Shivdasani and Amrita Arora, who gets to enact her real life friendship with Bebo, on screen. There's also Jaaved Jaffery who is happy in the ''Land of opportunities'', that's what he calls America throughout the movie. According to him, he began suing even before he started making su su (started peeing). His words, not mine! Why? Because the doctor who aided in his birth patted him on the butt and he started crying. His father had no option but to sue the doctor, ''Who cried all his life.'' That's his dialogue, not my line!
Apart from the gloss and dollops of glamour, there are also some stupid, mindless scenes, which challenge your mental stability. In one scene, a person even lets off wind bang in front of Amrita Arora's face. This, on her wedding day!
The first 15 minutes or so are palatable, after that, it gets monotonous and you wonder when this nightmare will end. Of course, there are a few scenes where Akshay proves his flair for comedy but not enough to rationalize the madness that unfolds in front of you on the giant screen.
Kareena puts life in a lifeless plot. Take her away and you will be left fuming 'Kambakkht' to director Sabbir Khan (no relative of Kabir Khan whose NEW YORK released last week). I don't see any actor putting so much zing in a role that's dead as a dodo.
Hats off to you Bebo!

Movie Review: KAMBAKKHT ISHQ Is Glamorous Paisa Vasool!! [03 Jul 2009]
STARRING
Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor, Aftab Shivdasani, Amrita Arora, Vindoo Dara Singh, Ashwin Mushran and others.
DIRECTION
Sabbir Khan
STORY
The plot of the film revolves around two diagonally opposite personalities of Viraj Shergill(Akshay Kumar) and Simrita Rai (Kareena Kapoor). Viraj works as a stuntman of big Hollywood heroes like Sylvester Stallone and earns a lot of money. Life is a big roller coaster ride for him. His working philosophy towards women is that 'women are good only for two things….making love & making love.' Words like 'marriage' and 'commitment' are taboo to him.
On the other extreme is Simrita Rai (Kareena Kapoor), who is a hardcore feminist and an aspiring surgeon. She also dabbles in modeling but only as a part timer. Simrita is complete opposite of Viraj and thinks that men are useless creatures. They are bad losers and so women should keep away from them. She does not believe in 'love' at all. In fact, she is complete antithesis of Viraj.
However, they are destined to meet at the wedding of Lucky (Aftab Shivdasani) and Kamini(Amrita Arora). Because Lucky is Viraj's younger brother, while Kamini is Simrita's bosom friend.
Lucky is deeply in love with Kamini, who is a top lingerie model. Lucky is an emotional person and not as practical and brutal as his elder brother. He wants to marry Kamini, who also loves him and dreams of a happy life ever after.
Viraj and Simrita are dead against this marriage, but Lucky and Kamini would have none of it. In fact, Lucky is quite opposite of Viraj and believes in committing to one woman. Similarly, Kamini is excited about marriage, children and house as opposed to Simrita Rai.
In this way, Simrita and Viraj are thrown together in a situation that they find difficult to come out of. A twist in the tale at this point changes everything between them. What happens after that forms rest of the story.
PERFORMANCE
Akshay Kumar is in terrific form and has carried his reputation, built from such flicks as 'Singh Is Kinng' and 'Namastey London', to new heights. 'Kambakkht Ishq' belongs to Akshay Kumar all the way. It is his great comic timing that holds the film together for two plus hours.
In the character of a stuntman, Viraj, Akshay Kumar is in his elements and uses the opportunity to re-establish his command over the medium (of course, after a dismal performance by his last release 'Chandni Chowk to China). In the first half of the film, the battle of sexes between Akshay and Kareena raises the temperature of theatre.
Kareena Kapoor, who plays the character of Simrita Rai, looks sizzling hot and provides ample oomph factor to the movie. She has superbly combined the histrionics with her terrific sex appeal, which was a must, as she plays a part time super model in the film.
Her hardened feminine attitude and supreme confidence, with which he encounters Akshay Kumar's sexist views, makes her a treat to watch. Kareena's character of Simrita seems to well connect with her earlier avatar in Karan Johar's super duper hit flick 'Kabhi Khusi Kabhi Gham'. Even snobbishness of 'Poo'(Kareena's character in K Jo's flick) is there. No doubt, only Kareena Kapoor could have provided the required shades to this character of Simrita Rai. Amrita Arora, who plays the character of a top lingerie model Kamini, enacts her character with ease. In any case, she has been a model and Kareena's bosom friend in real life too, so it was not difficult for her to enact the similar character.
Aftab Shivdasani, who plays the part of Lucky, younger brother of Akshay Kumar, is perfectly suited to the character. He looks sincere in his approach and successfully creates the aura of a persona completely in love with Amrita's character.
However, Javed Jaffrey fails to impress, but it is hardly his fault. Kirron Kher seems to be enjoying doing the same role over and over again (but what about the viewer?). Boman Irani looks natural. Hollywood biggies Stallone, Richards and Brandon Routh have been beautifully integrated in this bollywood flick.
The direction of Sabbir Khan seems to have the sole purpose of entertaining the masses and he has succeeded in this intention by keeping the pace of the film very fast in the first half. He should be given the credit to bring a new subject of 'battle of sexes' between Kareena and Akshay before the audience, though novelty ends at that point, and
it is Akki and Kareena's histrionics that holds the film together. Sabbir Khan's direction is especially superb in the sequence at the operation table, when Akshay is amazed by the presence of Kareena Kapoor. Sabbir also shows the command over medium during the church wedding sequence of Amrita and Aftab, where the sexiest war begins in its earnest.
However in the second half, the direction of Sabbir seems to be losing its grip and the movie starts going downwards. The viewer feels that the emotional angle that comes with a twist in the tale at this point was unnecessary and boring for about twenty minutes. However, the direction picks up the narrative again towards the pre-climax sequence.
The music of the film is its high point and should help the film at box office. The 'Om Mangalam' number by RDB is already topping the music charts. Even Anu Malik's 'Lakh Lakh' and 'Bebo' numbers have the potential to become popular with the hoi polloi.
The cinematography by Vikas Sivaraman is brilliant and has captured the scenes beautifully. The movie has grand sets and the film has been mounted on a lavish scale, as is usually the case with Sajid Nadiadwala's flicks.
STARDUST VERDICT
'Kambakkht Ishq' is glitzy, entertaining and full paisa vasool venture mounted on a grandiose scale. Akshay and Kareena provide all the ingredients required for a bollywood potboiler at the box office. Kareena oozes oomph and the hoi polloi is likely to lap up this venture, despite of some weak moments in the second half. Even the drought of a biggie from bollywood for last two months should help the film at the box office.
STAR Rating: ***
