On the Couch with Koel: Sonam's got it all
It's not always what happens on the couch but more often, what transpires after the couch has been tightly flat packed into its red box that reveals the true nature of the person who sat on it. The very tall Sonam Kapoor was invited on the couch because a) she has a smile that can light entire cities afflicted by power cuts. B ) speaks her mind freely without giving a damn about the code of diplomacy that must be adhered to by new entrants to Bollywood. c) in spite of the lukewarm response to both her films she's a mega superstar. d) I like her avant-garde sense of style. e) It's my party and I can invite who I want!
So, after our ber (Sonam's favourite word) interesting chat, I decided - here is a girl born to Bollywood blueblood who would much rather have her foot in her mouth than a silver spoon. This makes her instantly more appealing. She is intelligent, well-read, opinionated and still at that wonderful age when you have full faith in your invincibility! She knew what she wanted to talk about, what she didn't and how to steer the conversation to achieve that. I was impressed with her confidence but then again, if you are not sure of yourself in your twenties, honey, you've got a tough life ahead.
With these thoughts in my head we packed up. A day later, a tabloid got hold of the excerpts of our chat and blew out of proportion and context (they would make better writers of fiction) what Ms Kapoor said vis-a-vis Ms Rai-Bachchan and the whole Cannes-L'oreal saga. The news ink hadn't so much as dried and my phones went berserk. Fifty-two missed calls and seventy-six text messages (I too should be working for a tabloid) from Sonam's secretary, manager, PR, my producer (desperately trying to get hold of me on my day off)...
Her 'people' were up in arms ready for war. I assured them that it was not me or my 'people' that were responsible and I'd happily help in the damage control. They were not in the mood to be placated. To be fair, Sonam had been grossly misquoted at a time when the Ash-Sonam controversy was big enough for journalists to build a career on. Then the call I dreaded, came. Sonam flashed on my mobile and I thought the lady will demand my head.
Not quite. On the contrary, Sonam was calling to warn me about the collective hysterics of her team (who she now considers friends) and to tell me to simply ignore them. She had apparently, spent all morning calming them down, persuading them to look beyond such frivolous gossip. She believes it's part and parcel of being a star and comes with the territory. I almost dropped my phone. Even the cynic in me had to take her at face value. Because two minutes into our conversation after telling me I too should brush aside the 'no-news' news, she was counselling me and giving me sound PR advise about my show. She not only apologised for the trouble the tabloid piece had put me through (??!!) but also offered her help if it all got out of hand.
Luckily, it died a natural death like Sonam wisely predicted. As for me, I got to know the poised, unruffled girl who's thoughts may run away from her mouth before she's had time to think them but under fire she's as cool and as composed as a natural blueblood. She was no doubt born with the silver spoon in her mouth but she also earns it every step of the way.
