Directed by Puneet Sira, Kissan is based on the plight of farmers in India in which Sohail Khan plays a suicidal farmer.
Kissan will see actors Sohail Khan and Jackie Shroff don the turban for the first time. The film, set in rural India, revolves around the story of a father, played by Jackie Shroff, and his two sons, played by Sohail and Arbaaz Khan.
Director Sira reveals, "In the film, Jackie plays the role of a farmer who is true to his land and the dignity and pride attached to it. He is not affected by urbanisation and is a man of the earth. Though he knows that education is vital in today's times, he only has the capacity to send one of his sons to the city to study. Arbaaz then becomes a lawyer and returns to the village at a time of conflict. The film also highlights the plight of farmers today, along with what drives them to the extremes of ending their lives."
Puneet also spoke of Salim Khan, who originally wrote the script, saying, "I remember getting a call from Sohail and he told me to have a look at the story. The minute I heard it, I was blown away and decided to make the film. It is a very powerful subject and I know people will appreciate it."
Shroff, who plays the main protagonist Dayal Singh, speaks of what made him take up the film. He says, "80% of the people in India are farmers and the elite make up only a fraction of the population. Not many realise the situations in which the farmers are in today and, after I read the script, I definitely wanted to be a part of the film to do my part in highlighting these issues. These farmers are made to sign contracts blindly and many have even given up their ancestral land to undeserving people because of these situations."
Produced by UTV Spotboy and Sohail Khan Productions, the film also stars Dalip Tahil, Dia Mirza and Nauheed Cyrusi.
