"I want to be like Salman",says Azhar
Just like Rubina Ali, 9, the other Slumdog Millionaire kid who is struggling to adjust to life in the Bandra east hutment colony Garib Nagar, Azhar
|
In a small shanty made of metal walls and plastic sheets, he sits on a broken bed with heaps of unwashed clothes and utensils lying around, flies hovering over uneaten food, wishing for a kiddie bike that is available at Bhendi Bazar for Rs 20,000. "But they will give it to me at a discount for Rs 10,000," he pleads to his mother Shameen. All this while some distance away, Rubina's father Rafiq Qureshi reportedly was trying to sell his star kid off to a Dubai couple for a princely sum of Rs 1.8 crore!
Azhar is disinterested and irritable by this news, but his mother ' a warm woman whose entire world revolves around her son, mutters, "Pata nahin kaun kya kar raha hai. Duniya bhar mai bahut naam kamaya hamare bachche log ne. Par humko bahut mushkil bhi uthani pad rahi hai." She is unwilling to let Azhar go out of her sight. "He is my only hope," she says, declining to even send the boy to boarding school. "No packing him off anywhere. And no adoption business here. I will see that he gets the best education and become somebody big." Meanwhile, outside in the scorching sun, Azhar's father impatiently waits for the interview to get over.
Azhar adores Salman Khan and wants to grow up to become a star like him. "I love bikes and biryani, just like Salman. All macho men love bikes," he grins. "When I grow up, I will become a film star like Salman and own lots of bikes." There's hope of that happening. A documentary and a small feature film on Azhar is being made by an NRI filmmaker in which the Slumdog kid will play himself. Besides, a French writer is actually penning the ten-year-old's biography!
Dinesh Pujari, a slum kid himself once and now an international facilitator for Garib Nagar's underdogs, helps by bringing in endorsements and opportunities to walk the ramp and appear at public functions. He says, "Everyone wants to sponsor these kids' education but no one's coming forward to help them improve their basic living. Perhaps that is why Rubina's father reportedly attempted to sell her off..."
