Oh good lord- not this movie....it was SOOO baddd....it's not even funny.
The only good thing about the movie was the child artist...Yes, u do feel sad for the kiddo at the end but that was it. From start to close to end- was idiotic.

and what the heck was the sword fighting? badly choreographed.
Both Srk and Kareena overacted. geeezzzz....

Asoka😆😆 It should have been an animated movie. It was a bad attempt just like Ekta Kapoor ki Mahabharat.

What was Sivan and SRK thinking? SRK looked like the character you see in school plays. You know the kind with a crew hair cut and all. He just couldn't live Asoka of that era.
It was clearly a BAD movie and a pathetic attempt. That is why I laughed when SRK mentioned that he was offered Akbar's role in JA. Akbar was a 6 footer, fit and fine and there is no way SRK suited the character. I love him and I am partial to SRK but still a die-hard fan in me wishes SRK never attempts any historical characters because his face and structure just doesn't fit.
The one thing though Kareena looked and acted better. Perhaps the only good thing about the horrible movie.

I thought the little boy who played the prince, Kareena's brother was adorable, acted well for his age! I for one really liked Hrishita Bhatt in that movie, the best thing about it. Barring a few scenes, Kareena's acting was quite convincing, especially at the end, definite mark of improvement in her there.
SRK in that role-not too convincing, was disappointed. I remember when the trailors came out I was excited for it, but the movie as a whole was far from pleasing.

I have never watched it. And these responses surely are not encouraging me to anytime soon. But the soundtrack was good.😃

Dunno why, but I really loved it. I thought it was definitley one of the better kareean movies that came out around htat time.
Ofcourse, I viewed it more as a fictional piece rather than a historic movie

What character did Rahul Dev play? I don't remember him in the movie.

Asoka for me is more than a movie. It beautiful story of full circle of life. Its about moksha, ambition, love moving beyond the circle of life and death. I love of the dialog in the movie where someone says that how is Asoka not afraid of death and defeating everyone in his conquest. Then Asoka says that he is not afraid of death as he seaking death! He says that he is trying to find death! And this other scene in the movie where a priest comes and sees Asoka and says that you dont look like a regular person you are someone special. Then Asoka jokingly says that he is king! The priest says that no you are not a king you are somone who will be above king! a traveler. I love the different stages they have shown of Asoka, chand ashoka, lover ashoka, ruler ashoka and at the end he devotes everything to his religion.

I think it is an impossible task to capture the essence of a king like Asoka in a movie. The man was just amazing. I think in the movie they should have focussed more on Asoka's wife (played by hrishita bhatt in the movie). Asoka's wife played an imp role in his life and religion.
But there are many plus points of the movie. Such as its breathtaking locates. They have captured the beauty of madhya pradesh and other places in a very nice way. I love Kareena kapoors wadrobe in the movie and the tatoos also. This is one of kareena's few early movies where she has acted well. The songs of the movie and the background music is totally amazing. The cinematography is just awesome. The visuals of the movie are very appealing. The movie did very well in Toronto film festival where it also won some awards.
I hope srk makes another period drama, i think he would rock! And with Santosh sivan for sure.
(My Namaskar to all Asoka lovers! )

The songs didn't suit the film though.
BTW when Asoka was shown in some French festival that year, many thought that Kareena is an European actor. They just couldn't believe that someone in India could be that fair. It made headlines that time. 😆
