Shah Rukh Khan was at his witty best, as always, when we met him this week.
Talking about the craze of Valentine's Day celebrations across India, he said, "Well, Valentine's Day celebration never used to happen during our days. I do not remember having gifted anything to my near and dear ones. But yeah, we can surely extend our love to our close ones…Probably if you have been too tied up and have not been able to go and meet them, then this is the best time to show your love to them. It could be your mom, grandma or some old forgotten friend…you can pay a visit to them on this day. But why on this day only, it could be on all the 365 days."
When asked if he has ever got any expensive gifts for his friends in his younger days, SRK joked: "Look at my face! Do I look one who would have presented anything to my friends earlier?" He then added: "Even if I wished to present any gifts to any of my friends I would have not been able to do so. We were not so wealthy. Also, during our days, friends never believed in exchanging many gifts. The gifting business is a New Age fad."
On being asked who his first girlfriend was, SRK said very diplomatically, "Gauri has been my first and last girlfriend."
And perhaps taking a dig at some of his contemporaries who've moved on from one relationship to another, he said, "I believe in having long lasting relationships. So you see, I'm still with Gauri. These relationships, according to me, cannot be changed, off and on. I belong to the middle class thought of school and I am happy with my Gauri."
But he cautioned the youth not to get attracted to the glitz and glamour of the present day world. "We live in a world of disparities, hence it is natural for our ordinary selves to be attracted to the razzmatazz of the glamour world. But the fact remains that all this is not important. I advice the youth to not get attracted to all that glitters. One needs to be simple in his approach. Have a pure heart and soul. Work with dedication. It is important to maintain relationships," said SRK.
And, as if continuing from where he left off in "Luck By Chance" where he was seen mouthing a similar dialogue he said: "Be true to your friends and relations, this day is like any other celebration. Elaborate show of opulence is not what I believe in. I'm an ordinary man and so I say, be simple with pure intentions and success will knock at your door sooner or later."
