INDIAN MOVIES AND THE OSCARS

Slumdog Millionaire deeply impressed the firangs, so much that it has garnered a maximum of 10 nominations.

A source reports, "Smile Pinki a 39 minute short film in Hindi and Bhojpuri, directed by Emmy-nominated producer Megan Mylan has also been nominated in the 'Best Short Documentary' category.

Set in Varanasi, Smile Pinki revolves around a six-year-old girl from Mirzapur named Pinki who cannot go to school because of her cleft lips.

A simple surgery can fix her cleft lips, but instead she has to face social ostracism, until she meets Pankaj, a social worker who ensures that Pinki gets a free surgery.

Another film in the running for the 'Best Short Documentary' Oscar is The Final Inch by Irene Taylor Brodsky and Tom Grant. Once again, set in India, this documentary deals with the protagonist Muhammed Gulzar's battle with polio.

The Final Inch highlights efforts to eradicate polio in India, through his story."

Quite strange… all these films, although are made on India… but they are made by non-Indians… Does the west need western directors to show them what India is? Why doesn't an Indian director gets so much respect and honor from them? Does it mean the Oscars are biased? Or does it mean the western directors can see India better than our Indian directors?

What do you say?

My Answer , majority of Indian directors dont know how to direct . The very few who do are either very old , or are not recognised because they dont publicise and run advertise campaign or rope in glamorous stars . And hence these so called larger than life directors who make worthless movies are only heard and such movies are never considered by the oscars .

a very interesting topic indeed...
i so kinda agree that indians directors do not get as much respect n honour as the others get..
but c itss not all oscars fault..
i mean dere r hardly ne indian directors who hve exceptionally done na brilliant job 2 b nominated...excpet a few i must say...
so...i wont say oscars is biased...but indian directors do need to pull up dere socks...

Just look at the subjects these movies deal with....Definitely many Indian directors do not decide to make movies like that....I think Indian directors are capable of making great films but most don't....they try not to go outside of the box because that doesn't necessarily mean money....

the reason is:

Indian directors make movies on a grand scale and "usually" outside of India. Even if it is India they show unrealistic movie studios with huge mansions. Though there are movies that could be Oscar Worthy "aamir Khans movie". And also the #1 reason is most Indian movies have 4 to 5 songs which take up alot of time instead of telling a story. Notice that Slumdog Millionaire has movies but no lip movement just part of the movie not a hero/heroine lip syncing and dancing around. Even Aamir Khans movie have 3/4 songs. Also majority of Indian movies are not made from a book but usually american movie copies, nothing original because they do not read books but go by how popular american movies are and copy them.

I do not think that the oscar jury is biased but who wants to sit and watch a movie with 4/5 songs that really are just eye candy and not part of the story. Not the Jury for sure.

I agree with you Indian movies just copy 90% of the time, I know some hollywood filmakers copy to, but there admit there source,
Most of the Oscar nominated films are Originals unlike Bollywood, Indian audiences might enjoy the 4 or 5 dreamy dance and songs, but that takes up like total of half an hour.
Why does India think Slumdog Milliornair is an INDIAN film, Its not its Directed by a British director and produced by a Brithish Producer, the cast was selected by a BRITISH. It does not mean that if the Actors are Indians and that Ar rahman gave the music it become an Indian film.
Get over it guys. Stop saying something is right when its not.
