- Akshay-Aamir at loggerheads
The year 2008 has been a roller coaster year for Bollywood with some big stars' movies falling at the box office and now as the year is coming to a close it seems there is room at the top in Bollywood. King Khan might also be feeling the heat with the scramble for the pole position.
And, not surprisingly the actors making a dash for the frontline this year are the ones behind the biggest hits of the year.
Akshay Kumar got the biggest hit in recent times, with Singh Is Kinng, while Aamir Khan's clout as producer ensured that even a Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na with a fresh cast was a critical and commercial success.
"If you talk in terms of percentage profit than we know how much money you made in terms of how much money you invested, I think it will be a very tough fight between Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na and Singh Is Kinng again. The kind of money they invested in Jaane Tu… and the kind of money they recovered is incredible. So, it is clear now that it is a tough battle between Akshay Kumar and Aamir Khan," says film critic on Aamir vs Akshay Mayannk Shekhar.
"The fact that Aamir can introduce his nephew in a small film Jaane Tu… with a girl who has not been seen in the Hindi film industry for the last two years and yet make such a huge success in the film industry purely on the Aamir wave and of course on the merits of the film also shows the power Aamir has in the film industry," says Entertainment Editor Mumbai Mirror Indu Mirani.
This year, the rules have changed in Bollywood. While lavish, well hyped productions like Tashan, Love Story 2050 and Drona by big studios were magnificent flops, it was the sleeper hits that made a mark.
"If big budget films flopped it was because of the script. No one is bigger than the script, not Shah Rukh, not Akshay. The power structure has not changed," adds Indu.
So, it seems it is going to be a close race this year.
