Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi Goes Into Overdrive In Delhi/NCR

Friday 12th December 2008 19.00 IST
Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi which started off well in multiplexes of Delhi/NCR and fair at single screens has gone into overdrive as the evening and night shows have full houses.

Delhi city will have a nett collection of around 80 lakhs on day one from 31 cinemas while Gurgaon will collect over 20 lakhs nett from 7 cinemas. The figures are only second to Singh Is Kinng for the first day.

The reports are very positive from Delhi/NCR and the Shahrukh Khan starrer should see very healthy week one figures from the area.

South Is Strong For Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

Friday 12th December 2008 19.30 IST
Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

The predominantly North Indian Punjabi flavour has not come in the way of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi having a very good first day in the South India circuits.

The film started off well right from the first show in Nizam, Mysore, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, this could be because the South consists mainly of A grade centres and hindi films do not go into the interiors of the South much and so the the star power of Shahrukh Khan in big centres came into play.

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi has scored very well in the two big circuits Nizam and Mysore with Nizam first day nett gross set to be second only to Dhoom 2 and Mysore having the highest grossing first day ever.

Rab Ne Bana De Jodi sweeps the nation

By Subhash K. Jha, December 12, 2008 - 17:40 IST

Yash Raj Films reeling under the impact of a series of setbacks in 2007-2008 is all set to make a grand comeback with his latest big-time release Rab Ne Bana De Jodi.

In spite of the terror attacks two weeks ago and the downward curve in Yash Raj's recent image, the film had a massive opening which is expected to get better over the weekend and past it.

Roshan Singh a leading exhibitor of Bihar sums up the unexpected euphoria surrounding the latest Shah Rukh Khan starrer. "It's opened to full houses, the best opening I've had for a Yash Raj Film in the last two years. I should know, because my theatre screens all the Yash Raj films in Patna. People love the film. Nobody expected Rab Ne... to be such a sweet love story. Shah Rukh as an ordinary small- town guy proves he is truly the king. And the new girl Anushka is a revelation."

What's working for Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is the working-class ambience. The film delineates the dreams and aspirations of ordinary people.

"And the whole idea of putting the couple into a dance reality-show is a stroke of genius. Audiences immediately identify and connect with this new medium of getting famous overnight," says Roshan Singh.

In Mumbai, the responses on Friday ranged from exceptional to very very good. Said the Singh Is Kinng producer Vipul Shah, "I'm not surprised by the warm welcome that the film has got. After 26/11 Mumbai needed a feel good film. And the Shah Rukh-Aditya Chopra combination after eight years....Their last film together was Mohabbatein. I was really looking forward to the film. We don't get a film from the team that gave us Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge that easily."

With the heartening opening of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi the industry reeling under the twin impact of a recession and 26/11 can breathe easy.

The best reaction to the film's opening came from film's director Aditya Chopra and leading man Shah Rukh Khan's best friend Karan Johar in New York. "Rab Ne Bana Di will prove once and for all that the Adi-Shah Rukh jodi is god sent."

Don't 'Rab' that combo the wrong way.

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi Turns Up The Heat In Mumbai

Friday 12th December 2008 20.45 IST
Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi has scored very well in the Mumbai circuit after a slow start in the morning. Mumbai/Thane saw an okay start in the multiplexes in the morning at 60% with single screens being lower but the improvement was big from the noon show onwards with evening shows at 90%. Even after the slow start the film looks to be heading for 1.25 crore nett gross in Mumbai/Thane from 94 cinemas on the first day.

Ahmedabad is very good with the multiplexes excellent, Baroda is very good while Pune showed a similar performance as Mumbai city picking up from the afternoon shows. There are some B+C centres in Maharashtra which are doing average business but overall Mumbai circuit will have very good weekend business as reports are good.

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi Is Slow In Bihar

Friday 12th December 2008 20.30 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Rab Ne Ban Di Jodi is below the mark in Bihar barring Patna, Ranchi and Dhanbad. The other centres started slow and the improvement was slow compared to the rest of the country. The morning shows were 40-45% and evening shows around 55-60%.

The high grossing centres of Patna, Ranchi and Dhanbad are better and will put up good figures.

The film is also doing average in some centres of Rajasthan, CP Berar and CI but the important big centres like are Jaipur (Excellent), Kota, Nagpur, Raipur, Indore and Bhopal are doing very well.

SRK's only release in 2008 is a dud! | 2008-12-12

This critic wants a refund

When we spoke about 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi' in Oct, we voiced concern if Adi still had it in him to bounce back after the terrible 'Mohabbatein' campus outing 8 years ago, which not only launched a few newbies, but sank their careers with such a immediate monumental flop.

Where is Kim Sharma, or Shamita Shetty, or Preeti Jhangiani, all of whom were launched in the film...the same can be said for Anushka Sharma, who though seems to have better talent, how far will this flop beginning help her to make a foothold in the industry?

Will she turn out to be a one film wonder like Gracy Singh and Sonam Kapoor? Time to drop clothes Anushka!

But how is the failure of RNBDJ going to affect SRK? Not a hair on his head will be affected by it.

In Oct this year, when I spoke about RNBDJ, this is what we thought.

"In today's time, given the kind of economics that goes into the spinning of a movie, the film will recover its cost and make a table profit in the week it is released (Dec 12). What is to be seen is will it be a chip on the shoulder of the giant that DDLJ now is, which both Aditya-Shahrukh and the rest of Bollywood cannot surpass."

The word is out. The film is no patch on the genius we saw in DDLJ. That film is truly remarkable. Even Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the most critical of all film makers has had a kind word for Aditya Chopra for DDLJ.

Post that, everyone has been silent on the Yashraj movie churning factory, which has been dishing flops after flops for no rhyme or reason.

However, like I noted then, "Something interesting to notice in Yash Raj films is the gradual shift of focus from city lights to mofussil dreams. Bunty. Babli, Veer, Zaara, all of them came from middle-class milieu from the hinterlands to make it big."

Some of these films find a common ground in the interiors as they tend to mirror the stories of ordinary people with extra ordinary dreams. This might be the sole reason why RNBDJ will be able to strike a chord in B-centres, although it's not going to hold on for long.

The pace, the story, the characters, everything in the film is flat and no one will miss a thing if they decide to skip a special episode of a daily soap over it. Which will be an absolute waste of effort!

What will the audience take from it?

By November, I was in love with SRK's old dork look in RNBDJ, because it's more in sync with his age, while the slick bummer look is plain silly.

And 'Haule haule' which has the smoothness of a bend in the river as you flow with the harmonious tune.

The Filmfare guys will definitely give Sukhwinder a nod for this song in March next year.

As for the rest, Rab will have to work his magic.

SRK returns with Rab Ne Ban Di Jodi

Mansi Mehta, Beverly White
Friday, December 12, 2008 (Mumbai)

Special: Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

Shah Rukh Khan's not just taking a chance with his dancing abilities but the mood of the audiences too. The sole film featuring the star in 2008 Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi which has not had the usual publicity drive releases today.

The actor feels that the film's fate is in the hands of God. "Adi (Aditya Chopra) and I feel that God has made this film, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is controlled by rab (God). We are strong believers of God. We think rab will take care of it and the people who go to watch it. We just want them to smile in this time of depression," he said.

With a sombre mood in the country post the terror attacks producers hope that SRK's presence will attract the audiences back to the theatres.

"People are really looking forward to this movie because number one Shah Rukh Khan is coming back after more than a year. Number two people really want to go out now. We feel that Friday, Saturday, Sunday will be great for this film, 75 per cent tickets have already gone for the weekend," said Alok Tandon, Chief Operating Officer, Inox.

"It has the promise, it has the potential of becoming a big hit. Obviously one will have to wait for the first show and how audiences react to it and how many people actually walk to the ticket window and buy tickets," said Anand Vishal, Vice President, Marketing, Fun Cinemas.

While in Delhi too, cinema halls bearing the brunt of low revenues in the past few weeks have a reason to celebrate.

"We were waiting for this movie and now it has finally arrived. I think it will be a revival from the drought that we have been facing for the past two-three weeks. The demand is very high and I think our weekend will be all sold out," said Amitabh Vardhan, CEO, PVR Limited, New Delhi.

As a parched film industry awaits a hit all eyes rest on the fate of Rab Ne and Ghajini, which follows suit.

Tolly mind & Bolly might to beat blues

- Friday date for superstar SRK and super sleuth Feluda with 89 plex shows PRATIM D. GUPTA AND KUSHALI NAG

The superstar takes on the super sleuth at the box office this Friday, a battle that everyone wants both sides to win. Bollywood is banking on Shah Rukh Khan's Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi to end the year on a high and Tollywood needs Tintorettor Jishu to keep the Feluda hit parade going.

The year-end red carpet has been rolled out with the distributors and exhibitors flooding the screens. Rab Ne with a budget of Rs 31 crore has the king's share with 69 daily shows at the plexes plus screen space at Menoka, Elite and Malancha. Tintorettor has 20 daily shows at the plexes plus four shows each at Priya and Star.

"It may not be the best time to release a film but I am an entertainer… if through Rab Ne we are able to lift the mood of a few people, that is our success," Shah Rukh Khan told Metro from Mumbai. "From what I gather, the advances across the country have been very good. Let's hope everyone likes the film and feels happy."

The advance windows in Calcutta have been busy from Wednesday. "It's heartening that people want to watch movies again after a terrible phase," said Vikas Syal, the general manager of INOX (Forum).

Tollywood hasn't had a bad year, but the success of Bengal's favourite sleuth is vital for both money and morale. Vinayak Sarkar of T Sarkar Productions, the producer-distributor of Tintorettor Jishu, said: "The success of the film is important not just for us but also for the industry. It is one of the costliest films around with a budget of Rs 2 crore and it is the first Feluda film to be shot abroad, so its acceptance will only make things bigger and better for Tollywood."

Tintorettor director Sandip Ray was "nervous and scared" on release-eve. "The last two Feluda films — Bombaiyer Bombete and Kailase Kelenkari — did very well. I really hope this one does well too, with children coming to watch it during their winter holidays."

Feluda with 29 prints is of course no match for King Khan with 1,200 prints, but distributor-exhibitor Arijit Dutta adds a rider: "While Rab Ne will be big worldwide, Tintorettor will have a wider spread in Bengal."

Review

2008's most awaited release and first movie of Shahrukh Khan after a gap of 13 months, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, is finally out. Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is special for many reasons; first being that it is the first movie of Aditya Chopra after a gap of 8 years, it marks the debut of Anushka Sharma, and at the modern time of recession and terrorism, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is expected to bring smiles at the face of both the audience and the film distributors.

So, does Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi lives up to all these expectations? Well, it surely does. It delivers what has been promised by Shahrukh Khan and Aditya Chopra, a simple yet extraordinary love story.

Set in the beautiful Amritsar, the story is about an average guy named Surinder Sahni (Shahrukh Khan) who marries the daughter of his teacher, Tani (Anushka Sharma), due to some circumstances and how he tries to make her fall in love with him. Story is simple but effective, mainly because of the treatment given by Aditya Chopra.

One of the strongest points of the movie is the authentic look of Amritsar, brilliantly captured by Ravi K. Chandran. The other strong points of the movie are the script and direction, done brilliantly by Aditya Chopra. But Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi works because it's simple. Yes, from lyrics of the songs to the dialogues, from sets to the storyline, everything is so simple that you just fall in love with the movie.

One more point that is worth mentioning is that many beautiful moments in the movie are without dialogues, for example; the scene in which Surinder keeps a rose with the note for Tani and then decides to put the rose away or the one in which Tani packs lunch for him for the first time and Surinder keeps on looking at the lunch box even while driving. There are many small but lovable scenes which I won't mention so that you can enjoy the movie.

Music -

Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte is, undoubtedly, the best picturized song of 2008. If you thought Farah Khan captured the 70s look perfectly then think again. Aditya Chopra takes it to the whole new level and add to that 5 actresses of Bollywood in the song, Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte is a breathtaking experience.

Also the choreography of Dance Pe Chance and Haule Haule is top class. Watch out for the scene in which kids make the painting of Anushka in the song Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai, you'll love it. It's a very creative move by Aditya. Songs and background score is top class, as I mentioned in the music review of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.

Performance of Anushka Sharma -

Now let's move to acting department and first we'll talk about Anushka Sharma. One thing that I noticed is that people are comparing Deepika Padukone and Anushka Sharma, even the press is doing that. So who is the better actress? Anushka Sharma hands down.

She is totally lovable as the fun loving Punjabi girl and she looks beautiful, too. There is modulation in her voice which is clearly missing in Deepika and her acting is marvelous. Dialogue delivery is superb and she shows all the emotions while speaking.

All the people in theater clapped and whistled when she drove the bike, do I need to say anything more? Best debut actress of 2008 awards belongs to her.

Vinay Phatak as the friend of Shahrukh is nice and he can be a really strong contender for best supporting actor. He plays an important role in the development of Shahrukh's character.

Performance of Shahrukh Khan -

Now this brings us to Shahrukh. This role, without a doubt, is one of the best performances in his career. Playing the character of both Surinder and Raj was not an easy task considering they both are same person. Let me give you an example of that. How will you explain the dilemma of Surinder when Tani agress to leave her marriage and decides to run away with Raj? This can be really difficult to portray but Shahrukh has done it perfectly. He is charming as Raj but his role as Surinder steals the whole show.

His quiet nature and low key voice does full justice to Surinder's character. Emotions are clearly visible on his face, both as Surinder and Raj and he looks like 20 year old hunk as Raj and at the same time he looks like a 40 year old man as Surinder. A big applause for Shahrukh, even his haters will love him, no doubt about that. What about the reaction of audience? Whistles and claps.

Things that were not good -

But Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi lacks an emotional punch which was clearly visible in DDLJ. No doubt that the story will touch your heart but there is something missing. And there are some clichs, for example; the scene in which Tani realizes that she is in love with Surinder and not Raj.

There are many other clichs which could have been easily avoided especially in the dance show. One more thing which can go against is the length of the movie. It's not that you'll be bored or something but some people are impatient these days. But, the movie will grab your attention during the whole time so chances are less.

Verdict -

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is clearly a winner for Yash Raj Films and it can break many records because of its theme. Film works because of its simplicity and the feel good factor it carries along with it. In the modern era in which relationships are ending just like that, it clearly brings a hope that true love is still out there. Moreover, it'll also help you to overcome the sadness which is around us due to terrorism and recession.

Anushka Sharma makes a solid debut and she is clearly the next big thing. She is not your average good looking girl who doesn't know how to act. She has an immense amount of talent and should use it carefully.

But the real star of the movie is Shahrukh Khan. This movie clearly shows how much talented actor he is. Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi will take his super star status to a whole new level, especially among the foreign audience, considering it is being released in 30 countries. Fight for the best actor award is between Hrithik Roshan and Shahrukh now but we've to wait for Ghajini. A sure shot blockbuster as its budget is low. Highly Recommended!

Rating - ****
