Bipasha Basu at Srinagar airport

Petrified at the crowd's behaviour in Kashmir, Bipasha Basu has left the sets of her upcoming film Lamha and returned to Mumbai, leaving director Rahul Dholakia, producer Bunty Walia and co-actor Sanjay Dutt in a lurch.

Bipasha's decision to work in Lamha and subsequently, shoot in Kashmir, a place always under tension, took the cast and crew by surprise, and won her accolades and respect from many. But Bips is obviously regretting her decision.

Bipasha left the sets, packed her bags and left for Mumbai after shooting for less than a week. What's more troubling is that she left Kashmir on the day her co-star Sanjay Dutt arrived in Srinagar for the shoot.

Says a unit member, "We were supposed to shoot in a place called Anantnag district, which is 55 kms away from Srinagar. Bipasha was to shoot a small sequence there. But a short while after we began shooting, the locals gathered to watch Bipasha shoot and created a ruckus."

Speaking hours after the incident director Rahul Dholakia was in a daze in Srinagar. "I don't understand what happened. Something freaked Bipasha out. I don't know what it is. She gave me no explanation before flying back to Mumbai beyond saying, 'You won't understand, you're not a woman.'

Yes there were security issues from the moment she arrived. And I was aware of them. We did our best and we provided the best possible security…obviously it wasn't enough. But just a day earlier Bipasha shot happily, took pictures of the locals, and seemed to have settled down in the shoot. And now this happens…"

The director seems clueless. "On Saturday morning we were shooting in a place called Anantnag. It has a mosque and a temple side by side. There was full security on the location, and everything seemed okay. But then suddenly Bipasha announced she won't shoot anymore. It wasn't as if anyone touched her or anything like that. Yes, the crowds were excited. But it was a positive energy. They were happy to see a big star like Bipasha, that's all. I really don't know what freaked Bipasha out. We're working against serious odds here and her going like this really affects the schedule."

Adds the source, " She was to shoot a scene where she's seen crossing a street, with two men following her. There were hundreds of security personnel, both from the army and the CRPF, for her security. Even a governor is not allotted so many security guards! The crowds neither touched her nor did they come in her way, all that they did was wave out to the actress. We didn't know what went wrong as suddenly Bipasha seemed paranoid and decided to leave the sets and go to her van. She spent almost an hour inside her van and called up only to say that she was leaving for the hotel. Then she left."

"She reached the hotel and checked out with her luggage. Rahul reached the hotel in a jiffy and tried convincing her not to leave. But she left straight for the airport and got into a flight for Mumbai."

It has been decided that the shoot will now continue at Manali. Meanwhile, Sanjay Dutt too will return to Mumbai.

Wow, if she felt her life was in danger, it was right for her to do what she felt was right. Life costs more than movies or luxuries.
