I think we will never know what really happened but the truth also is Amit abh Bachchan and Rekha were in love and at one time he was even planning to walk out on Jaya. But bonding with his parents is so strong that he had to come back because they always supported Jaya. Jaya was their ideal DIL.

Every woman doesn't have this strength and I admire Jaya for this. She believed in something and stood by it. He had to come back. He severed ties with Rekha after his Coolie accident. That is when, it is said that he realized what Jaya meant to him. Rekha too kept fasts for him but things changed.
