Deepika: From sexy to sexist?

Deepika Padukone may have risen to become the face of the young, contemporary Indian woman. But does she really represent them? Well going by some of her views, certainly not.

When it comes to the issue of men misbehaving with women, Deepika appears to be quite a sexist. She believes how a woman is treated by men depends on how she carries herself.

"Fortunately, I have never been mistreated or mishandled, but I think a lot depends on the way you carry yourself," Deepika told Headlines Today.

"Yes there have been instances where women have been ill-treated, but I also believe that it's the way a woman projects herself and the way she carries herself (that matters)," said the actor, who was in Delhi to participate in the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week.

While Deepika's comments would make many go red in the face, her Bollywood counterparts Minissha Lamba and Sameera Reddy showed the way by crusading for women.

Minissha and Sameera walked the ramp at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week to spread awareness on breast cancer.

Minissha agreed that Indians are shy to talk about their bodies. "The word 'breasts' is a very intimate word. And when it's linked to something like cancer, people find it scary. They don't want to talk about it openly," she said.

According to Sameera, "Fashion is a language that all women love to speak. It's a great way to spread the message that breast cancer is something we can't take lightly anymore."

In the end it was Minissha, and not Deepika, who was able to properly define the new age woman and her priorities. "Today's woman, especially the Indian woman, is always taught to be self sacrificing. Now is the time when we have to stand up and let them know that you (women) are a priority," Minissha said.

I always hate people who give comments like this " a girl should walk/ talk/ dress properly or she is inviting trouble " ... as if we are dogs that need to be kept on the leash....
how can deepika give such sexist and narrow minded comments is beyond me...
and three cheers for minissha .... she is spot on! .... somehow we assume the more sacrificing the woman is, the better she is...

It's not a very clever comment to make, it suggests that she think's women are to blame for how they treated i.e does that mean if a girl wears a short skirt she's asking to be raped?
Shocking....i thought she was more stronger than that. It seems as though she thinks like a man....

I will wait to see what the question is and in what context before making any judgement..

All i can say is what Deepika said is what our moms have taught us from childhood..carry yourself with dignity....people will respect you only if you repect yourself...and we follow it.
In the normal world people will treat you how you let them treat you..It has worked for us in school, colleges or workplace. And it is a very good advice to give our daughters.
But unfortunately there are violent and antisocial elements every where..If you are in a situation like that,it has nothing to do with what you wear or how you conduct yourself.A rapist is a rapist,a paedophile was always one..you didn't make him. What If you come face to face with a murderer...whose fault is it?A situation like that is a different kind of challenge.
It is a good Idea to lock your doors,But if some one wants to break in,they will..You may be a careful driver and it is a good thing, yet some drunk can hit you..
Two blousy starlets walking the ramp at a glitzy fashion show for spreading cancer awareness..ha ha...If that is not sexist,or opportunistic, what is.
Breast Cancer awareness or lack of it is a serious matter.Do your friends suffer from it or have you heard their mothers or other older relatives suffer from it ? breast cancer affects women above 40.You are not even allowed a mammogram before that age...Shabana Azmi or any other senior actress are the ones who need to talk or walk on the ramp...not the ones who let it all hang out in slutty bikini tops.....sexist...much..yes🤢
Pamela Anderson or Jordan should have come down to spread Breast cancer awareness..The uninformed women in small towns would have been deeply indebted..
I am not at all impressed with the writer..let us see if we will hear more about it..Read the interview perhaps..
Till then let our personal bias not get the better of us..

I agree with minishas comments 100% well said as for deepika i think shes been misinterpeted i do not think she is any way that she is saying that rape is right or anything like that ..but that some women wear really short tops and skirts and then men keep staring at them saying this by experiance of my friend as well who stopped wearing skirts since then..thats all i think she is saying and how they carry them selves as well when they wear those clothes is a big thing too.
