I think there's a huge difference between the Dhoom franchise and Kidnap. Dhoom never promised to be a thriller; it was what some call "a mindless masala flick". Kidnap, on the other hand, was hyped to be a really amazing thriller and the enthralling rapture of a thriller was simply not present. The first ten-fifteen minutes were good, I'll admit, but as the story progresed, it got tedious. The motif for the revenge around which the whole story was built was so insignificant and more than a little pathetic. Apart from that, there were gaping loop-holes in the plot and screenplay. Minissha was given a wide variety of revealing wardrobe during the period she was kidnapped. Likewise, the cleavage show by Minissha was unnecessary. Liabilities such as this on the director's part discredited the entire movie.
I agree vehemently about the strong character. I'm tired of watching the actresses being used as sexy ornaments. Gone are the times when Madhuri or Sridevi took an entire movie on their shoulders; the actresses nowadays are always baring it all while having no substantial significance to the actual script. It feels that we're going back in time. Sadly, Sonia's character doesn't try to break that trend. The "'Lo and behold, I have cleavage" dresses were solely for the male viewer's benefit.
Just wondering how Kidnap is different than rest of the clich?movies. With the tacky songs ("Mausaum and Awesome"?🤢 Someone was obviously very frustrated), the unnecessary cleavage display and the "At the age of 40+, I can zap around like a superhero" scene slide Kidnap right back into the clich?ategory. The opening song where Minissha prances around, scantily-clad, doesn't differentiate this movie from the rest.

Hmmm. I have to be honest and say I can't see a huge difference between the Dhoom franchise and Kidnap. None of them are path-breaking nor are they meant to be. I'm not sure how it was promoted where you are but where I am it was always promoted as a action-y/drama by the director of Dhoom and Dhoom 2. That reads "mindless masala flick" to me frankly. Perhaps it is for this reason that I ended up liking it alot more than some others did. God knows there were lots of WTF moments for me in Dhoom 2, never mind Dhoom. And we can't pretend they weren't wafer thin on plot as well.

If there wasn't any place for the romance in the movie - why the steamy smooch? It was not required and didn't add to the script in anyway other than establish the attraction that the audience was already privy to.

See I don't see how Minissha "bared it all". Her costumes didn't bother me in the least and I don't think it detracted from the story. But that's just me. Others seem particularly bothered by it. And I certainly don't think she was solely a sexy ornament as you put it. I thought her character was fiesty and had a lot of heart. Again, not Oscar worthy material but a damn sight better than having to endure her begging for mercy or sobbing in misery all the time. And what steamy smooch? The version I saw didn't have that in it.
And again, comparing a Sonia character to something Madhuri or Srivdevi would have done is a bit illogical. Kidnap isn't that sort of movie and doesn't pretend to be. It's a Sanjay Ghadvi flick for crying out loud, what did people really expect? Everyone who signs up to them knows what they're getting into and why. There's plenty of room in Bollywood for all sorts of movies and all sorts of characters afterall.

Just wondering how Kidnap is different than rest of the clich'd movies.

It's not. And I've never claimed that it is. What I have said it's that it's no different from dozens of other masala flicks which have gone on to be big hits. But because movie-watching is subjective, I enjoyed this film more than I have enjoyed other similar movies. For a variety of reasons but that's neither here nor there on this thread.
