| Hot bods: Shah Rukh Khan and Malaika Arora Khan in the song Kaal Dhamaal | Filmmaker Karan Johar is busy at Filmistan Studios supervising the song sequence (along with director Soham) between Shah Rukh Khan and Malaika Arora, of his production, Kaal (jointly produced by Johar and Khan).
But hey, what's Khan doing in the film? We thought the film starred Ajay Devgan, Vivek Oberoi, John Abraham, Lara Dutta and Esha Deol.
Johar explains, "Shah Rukh is only in the title song sequence, which is called Kaal dhamaal. He does not have a running role in the film. He will not figure anywhere in the publicity of the film, except as a producer. The film is headed by Ajay, Vivek, John, Lara and Esha. It's a highly stylised song sequence.
A total nightclub number. We thought about it during the making and since Shah Rukh, who is a co-producer suggested it, we went ahead. It required only four days of his time. I had promised him a good song. It's an item song.
We have had item girls and boys but Shah Rukh will be the first item superstar. He is looking very cool. He is wearing tattoos for the first time."
The music of Kaal Dhamaal has been given by Salim-Sulaiman and the sequences are choreographed by Farah Khan. While the set design is by Sharmistha Roy, Khan's and Malaika's styling and outfits have been done by Surily Goel, while the dancers looks have been done by Anaida Shroff Adjania.
Why Shah Rukh? "Why not Shah Rukh?" asks Johar. "We are both the producers and he's India's biggest star and the producer, so if we get to use him for the film, why not?
We needed an elaborate title song sequence to begin the film and this is something Shah Rukh hasn't done before. The last time he did something like this was Ishq kameena in Shakti."
What's the concept of the song? Farah Khan who comes with Khan and Arora after Chaiyyan Chaiyyan, says she stuck to Johar's brief for the song.
"It's an item song with Shah Rukh and Malaika in it. So we shot it with a very James Bond kind of flavour, high-tech, a '70s retro kind of feel to it, with the dance number on one side and the titles running on the other," says Farah.
Johar continues, "The set has elements of the film in it." Adds Farah, "The set was like a disco set in the middle of the jungle, as Kaal is based in the jungle. The dancers had a wild, animalistic look to them with leopard printed leotards etc.
It's something that Shah Rukh, Malaika and I have done completely different from Chaiyan chaiyan which was folksy. It's more like a Justin Timberlake video with hardcore western dancing. Malaika has also done a Russian ballet kind of a dance in the song."
Kaal means time and the film is a thriller. "Kaal can have many meanings, including time, but here we mean is that it's time to die.
When it's time to die you fight it successfully or you don't," explains Johar. Besides this, there will be music videos of Kaal and background songs in the film," says Johar.
Anything else? "Please don't miss the beginning," grins Johar. |
