More Mannat Mess

By Krishna Jewel, AllBollywood.com Staff
April 05, 2007

It is nothing new to say one has to take the good and the bad in life, and one doesn't come without the other.

While Shah Rukh Khan is riding on a high at the moment with the unveiling of his duplicate in Madame Tussauds London, and has completed his first season of the game show Kaun Banega Crorepati with happy audineces and viewers. As well as currently shooting for Farah Khan's Om Shanti Om, it seems like all is well in King Khans kingdom.

However...here comes the bad...Shah Rukh has found himself in some legal hassles. Shah Rukh Khan has been asked by the Bombay High Court to submit documents regarding ownership, sanctions and permissions for construction in the compound of his Bandra bungalow 'Mannat'.

Khan has two weeks to submit it.

Apparently, the court had previously dismissed another PIL that raised the same issue, but an NGO claimed that it was challenging the construction on different grounds. The issue is that the construction blocks a road along Mannat that links Bhabha Road and Mount Mary Road in suburban Bandra.

It is alleged that Khan was given preferential treatment by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and state government when they lifted the reservation on a plot of land, adjacent to his bungalow.

ShahRukh Khan is facing legal trouble as he has been asked by the Bombay High Court to submit documents regarding ownership, sanctions and permissions for construction in the compound of his bungalow Mannat in Bandra. Khan has to submit it within two weeks.

It is believed that the court had earlier dismissed another PIL that raised the same issue but a NGO claimed that it was challenging the construction on different grounds. The issue is that the construction blocks a road along Mannat that links Bhabha Road and Mount Mary Road in suburban Bandra.

The plot was subsequently purchased and developed by Khan. It is alleged that Shah Rukh was given unnecessary favour by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and state government when they lifted the reservation on a plot of land, adjacent to his bungalow.

Shah Rukh's 'CHAMPU' wax statue!

Comment: Injustice at Madame Tussauds?

A life-size wax statue of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan was inaugurated at the world-famous Madame Tussaud's museum in London recently. Much to everyone's surprise, the statue looks more like the 'Kaun Banega Champu' (a spoof on KBC) host and stand-up comedian Sunil Grover than the real Shah Rukh Khan! Why it that the Tussauds wax artists are unable to create an exact version of our stars? The Hollywood stars' wax statues are so life-like! Even Aishwarya Rai's wax statute isn't an exact replica of the Indian beauty – in fact far from it. Amitabh Bachchan's wax model is not an exception either but is a better effort when compared to these two 'fake attempts'. It's disappointing considering the fact that Shah Rukh is extremely popular and deserves better than a 'champu' wax statue by the Brits.

K... K... King Khan rules over Sachin

By: Nishant A Bhuse
April 6, 2007

After India's shameful exit from the World Cup, dubbing artistes who did voiceovers for cricket stars like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Yuvraj Singh and Navjot Singh Sidhu have wisely taken to imitating Shah Rukh Khan's. Imitating SRK, the undisputed king of endorsements or radio and TV, fetches a professional voiceover artiste between Rs 20,000 and 25,000 for a 30-second slot, which may add up to Rs 3 lakh or more in a month.

SRK rules

Says Rohit Kulkarni, programming head of Radio One 94.3 FM whose station beams spoofs on SRK (KBC) and Big B, "Shah Rukh is a popular voice on radio and endorsements. Professional artistes with superior voice quality cost us between Rs 25,000 for 30 seconds."

Inzy who?

Sunil Grover who spoofs Shah Rukh's mannerisms on Kaun Banega Champu on Filmi channel is also one of the highest paid voiceover artistes. "Shah Rukh has one of the hottest voices in the market today.

Before the World Cup, the voices of Sachin, Dravid, Kapil Dev, Yuvraj, Inzamam and Sidhu were in demand. After India and Pakistan's dismal exit, I have not done a single voicing for these cricketers," says Grover.

Aila!

Says Shrikant R, another voiceover artiste, "Shah Rukh's voice in KBC is in demand. Everyone wants to listen to it.

Sanjay Dutt and Circuit (Arshad Warsi) too are popular. No one has asked for a Tendulkar's voice for a week now." K Kakes, sound engineer and proprietor of K and S Sound, a sound recording studio says, "Shah Rukh and Amitabh Bachchan's voice have become bread and butter for the professional artists."

Awaaz kunacha?

Top 10 voices in the last 1 year

* Shah Rukh Khan
* Amitabh Bachchan
* Sachin Tendulkar
* Sanjay Dutt (Munna Bhai)
* Arshad Warsi (Circuit) / Navjot Singh Sidhu
* Rahul Dravid
* Saif Ali Khan
* Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan)
* Thakur (Sanjeev Kumar)
* Shatrugun Sinha

SRK checks if Shakira's hips lie!

Shah Rukh Khan will be checking out if Shakira's hips lie in an item number in Farah Khan's Om Shanti Om.

Shah Rukh Khan will be shaking hips with Latino pop sensation Shakira for an item number in his home production directed by Farah Khan, Om Shanti Om. He will also be dancing with 16 Bollywood beauties in Farah's brother Sajid Khan's directorial debut, Heyy Babyy.

Our source close to Farah, informs, "Farah had choreographed Shakira's Hip Don't Lie number for the MTV America at Radio City, New York, last September. They had bonded big time and Shakira had shown keen interest in doing a dance number in a Bollywood film. When last month Shakira was in Mumbai for her show, Farah had met her and there was a discussion about the song number to be picturised later next month. The item song has already been recorded by the film's music directors Vishal Shekhar."

Farah had earlier been quoted saying about Shakira, "She has seen my Chaiyyan Chaiyyan song from Dil Se. She keeps pointing to Shah Rukh in the song and exclaims – 'I know that guy'. I told her he's the Tom Cruise of India . I've promised her I'd put her on top of a train when I do a music video with her."

"May be perhaps a part of SRK's Om Shanti Om number with Shakira be shot on a moving train ala Chaiyyan Chaiyyan." adds our source.

Apparently in Sajid's film, the King Khan will be dancing with 16 Bollywood beauties - Amisha Patel, Celina Jaitley, Koena Mitra, Dia Mirza, Shamita Shetty, Neha Dhupia, Malaika and sister Amrita Arora, Amrita Rao, Tara Sharma, Minissha Lamba, Riya Sen, Sophie Chaudhary, Masumi Makhija, Aarti Chhabria and Hrishita Bhatt. That song shall be choreographed by Farah as well. The song also features Akshay Kumar and is put to tune by Shankar Ehsaan and Loy whom Sajid terms as Bollywood's most original music directors.

Sajid Khan refused to comment anything regarding SRK's dance number in Heyy Babyy, calling it too early to speak anything about the film. "I will give you all the info you need in May" he assured us. SRK is also close pals with Sajid Nadiadwala (Heyy Babyy producer) for whom he had done a small cameo and a dance sequence with Salman Khan in Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega(2000).

SRK has earlier featured in two items songs, Ishq Kamina in Shakti (2002) with Aishwarya Rai and Kaal dhamaal in Kaal (2005) with Malaika Arora. Incidentally both these numbers have been blockbuster hits.

Heyy Babyy stars Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Fardeen Khan and Ritesh Deshmukh in the lead roles. Om Shanti Om features SRK in a double role with newcomer Deepika Padukone, Shreyas Talpade and Arjun Rampal.

Kajol and Shahrukh Khan onscreen in a Karan Johar film

Last year actress Kajol made a comeback with actor Aamir Khan in Fanaa. However in spite of receiving plenty of film offers since her comeback, the actress is adamant on doing a selective few films as she wants to spend maximum time with her daughter Nysa. However now according to sources Kajol might make a full fledged comeback in a Karan Johar film with none other than Shahrukh Khan. Prior to marriage and motherhood, Kajol has done several films with SRK and the two were considered a hit pair.

According to sources, good friend and filmmaker Karan Johar is trying his best to convince Kajol to do his film and return to bollywood full time. Kajol will also be doing her husband Ajay Divan's directorial debut film and has also been seen in several ads along with hubby Ajay Devgan. Karan Johar is currently working on the research for his script and plans to have a film with a strong social message. Sources claim the film will be shot in New York, but actress Kajol still has to give the final confirmation. If Kajol agrees to do Karan's film with SRK it will definitely be a homecoming of sorts and the audience will be anxiously waiting to see the magic between the couple once more on-screen.

SRK waxed twice

From London to Kanyakumari: SRK's waxen body double shows up in Indian theme park

Sandipan Dalal

Shah Rukh Khan has reason to rejoice. After he unveiled his wax figure at Madame Tussauds recently, here comes the news that a desi version of a waxen SRK is housed at a theme park called Baywatch in Kanyakumari. Artist Sunil Kandaloor, who has been making wax figures over the years, managed to create Shah Rukh in wax within a month and a half. Strangely, Kandaloor has never met the actor and the measurements were taken depending entirely on a life size poster of the actor that the artist had acquired. Says Kandaloor, who functions out of his residence in the Alleppey district of Kerala, "I wasn't fortunate enough to meet Shah Rukh and take his measurements as professional from Madame Tussauds did. I believe Bollywood actors are not easily accessible. I finished the figure with the help of only one helper."

Shah Rukh's wax figure was unveiled yesterday at the theme park, which boasts to have about 20 wax figure of public figures including PM Manmohan Singh and South superstar Rajnikant.

When we informed the actor about his desi wax figure sporting denims, white tee and denims, Shah Rukh says, "I didn't know about this wax figure being unveiled at Kanyakumari. Maybe I'm doing something right. Maybe people prefer my statue over me. Either way, I'm thrilled by this importance given to me and humbled at the same time."

SRK and Saddam's wax figures at Kanyakumari

Wax professional Kandaloor who is presently working on figures of Indira Gandhi, Mother Teresa and Amitabh Bachchan says he specifically enjoyed working on Khan's dimples. "He's a superstar with a perfect smile. I maybe be living in the Southern tip of India but I'm aware of Shah Rukh's celebrated films. Unlike Madame Tussauds' figure, my creation has a more casual look. However, I'm yet to decide which is a better work of art." Kandaloor is set to visit the Madam Tussauds museum at Baker Square, London next month. Well, you'll know the truth at the House of Wax.

KJo's sea-grade dream

Karan Johar is hunting for a sea-facing house close to pal Shah Rukh Khan's Mannat at Bandstand

Sandipan Dalal

Karan Johar at his Pali Hill home

If all goes well, buddies Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan will soon be neighbours. The filmmaker, who intends to move out of his Pali Hill residence, is already hunting for a sea-facing apartment at the Bandstand and Carter Road stretch. Apparently, Karan is pretty dissatisfied with the 'concrete jungle' of Pali Hill and is looking for 'greener pastures'. An irate Karan says, "Whenever you look out of the window the only thing you get to see is concrete structures. I'm quite sick of this sight and plan to move out of this apartment by the end of this year."

Karan, who was born and raised in Malabar Hill, sorely misses the Queen's necklace and yearns to move into a property that opens to the sea. "After having lived in Malabar Hill for 27 years we shifted to this apartment. We had bought this property on impulse," he says. In fact, the actor believes that it's an interim phase and that he is yet to find his home. He further adds, "Professionally, this house has been lucky. Barring Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, all my other films have been a product of this house. But I'm yet to find a 'home sweet home'."

Apart from living in a sea-facing apartment, the filmmaker is also keen on owning a place that has positive energy. He adds, "I believe in the energy of a space. I have been looking at a couple of properties around Bandra but I'm yet to find one that I'd really like to live in. Even mom (Hiroo Johar) has to like the place," he adds.

The filmmaker plans to take a more hands-on while doing up his new pad. He says, "When this Pali Hill pad was getting ready I hardly took any interest in the interiors of the house. Payal (Aditya Chopra's ex wife), who is a family friend, was responsible for the interiors. But this time around, I want to be more involved."

* I believe in the energy of a space. I have been looking at a couple of properties around Bandra...

Shah Rukh rapped by his acting guru

FROM SIR WITH LOVE: Maybe SRK should get back to theatre with me, says Barry John.

Mumbai: Is Shah Rukh Khan getting rusty? While the actor's loyal fans may not agree, his acting guru Barry John sure has a different take.

Back in the 80s when SRK was just one of the many aspiring actors, he trained with Barry at his Delhi-based theatre workshop.

Over the years, the actor's success story had become the instructor's biggest claim to fame, even though he's also groomed fine actors such as Manoj Bajpai and Raghuvir Yadav.

At the opening of the Mumbai branch of his acting school, Barry John observed SRK had reached a stage where he needed to rediscover his acting roots. "Maybe he should get back to theatre with me," he said.

Stating his theory on acting, the guru said actors have to recharge their batteries to keep evolving. For Barry, the same applies even to his most famous student. "Like all actors, he is human," said Barry. "So maybe he is beginning to get rusty after all these years."

Interestingly, Barry's event was not attended by SRK, who is otherwise known to be extremely loyal to anyone who's helped him in his formative years.

It seems he was not even aware of Barry's Mumbai foray. "He's got better things to do," shrugged the veteran acting guru. Clearly, both teacher and student have moved on.
