Shahrukhism' Ruled at this year's Central European Bollywood Awards ceremony, as 'Khanians' in the heart of Europe gave Kabhi Alvida Na Kahna (KANK) seven awards out of nine nominations in 21 categories, including the best film, director, actor, supporting actor, cinematography, costume and music.

Hosted by the first pan-European International Bollywood Bloggers' Meet in Vienna, the annual awards are announced online by molodezhnaja,

the largest German language Bollywood website since 2003.

The Vienna event was the first time that the bloggers met in person. All because of their undying love for Shahrukh, fans gave Kajol the best actress award for her role in Fanaa, as a signal to Bollywood that fans here mangein more films starring the couple. In the meantime, Shahrukh and Rani Mukherjee were voted the best jodi. The 'Green Ladoo' went to Dhoom 2 for the most disappointing film, followed by Umrao Jaan!

However, the results provoked many 'boos' from the audience. Some waved banners reading, "Avoid Yaar!" when the award to Karan Johar was announced. Barbara Skoda, 35, manager of Vienna's School of Audio Engineering (SAE), blogger Baba aur Bollywood, a self-confessed lover of the music of both AR Rahman and Mozart, owner of 240 Bollywood movies who wanted to marry Kabir Bedi when she was 10 years old after the actor played Sandokan on Italian television, and today "lattoo" over Sanjay Dutt, said "Bleh!" when KANK was singled out for award after award.

"This is because KANK had better exposure here, playing for weeks in cinema houses across Europe, while Omkara and Rang de Basanti were publicly screened perhaps once, and Lage Raho Munna Bhai was watched mostly on DVD. If only German distributors and television stations screened more non-Shahrukh movies, the fan-base will increase and we won't have to award only Karan Johar," Skoda elaborated.

About 1000 Bollywood fans participated in the online voting, out of which 800 were from Europe.

Beth Watkins from the University of Illinois, USA, met European Bollywood fans in cyber space through her blog, Beth loves Bollywood, launched after she first saw Taal in 2005. She will happily help to organise any event in the future to give away awards in person, only so that she can march up to Karan Johar to say, "No, you can't have it! Boooo!"

At the awards, attended by 20 Europeans, Beth was the only American. She shared the dance floor with Professor Elke Mader from the Institute of Cultural and Social Anthropology, Vienna University, as the volume of Khaike paan banaras wala… was turned up to maximum.

Professor Bernhard Fuchs, from Vienna University's Institute of European Ethnology and author of Filmi Fulmi Masti: Bollywood Makes Happy, preferred swinging to Kajrare… Placards painted with "Wah, Wah" in colourful confetti and neon ink went up after Babsi Artner, an Austrian actress, announced that she had at last won a fine role in an Indo-German film to be directed by Himesh Reshammiya.

But it is more than just masti that Europeans are getting out of Bollywood. Afraid that xenophobic elements on the continent want to cut off contact with people and cultures from other parts of the world, Professor Fuchs insists that international influences on Austrian culture are very important, "A person's identity must be flexible. If it is not, it is totalitarianism against the self and against others. The best in human beings emerges when they interact with others different to them. Our love for Bollywood is the celebration of our capacity to be open to other cultures," the professor said in fluent Hindi.

Professor Claus Tieber teaches film studies at Vienna University. He sold 300 copies of his book Passages to Bollywood (with a two-page foreword by Yash Chopra), within three weeks of its release in March. He remains a fan of Amitabh Bachchan, full of admiration for the actor for giving the international community a glimpse into the life of ordinary Indians like coal miners and coolies. His courses at the university include Amitabh Bachchan and films of the 1970s. He calls globalised stars like Shahrukh Khan "cultural brokers".

To the life of Professor Mader, who teaches a course called 'Myths and Cinema', Shahrukh brings magic. She is not interested in whether he is a good or a bad influence; she studies the reasons for Bollywood's extreme popularity. "Why are these people rocking to Bollywood music and not sitting like typical Viennese at an opera, or in a coffee house?" she would like to know.

Therefore, lage raho Shahrukh…as long as myth remains a mystery.

Shah Rukh Khan joins Tussauds' India gallery

London, April 4 (IANS) Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan became the latest Indian to be featured in the Madame Tussauds museum when his life-size wax statue was unveiled here Tuesday morning.

Shah Rukh is the third Indian actor to figure in the popular tourist attraction - the other two are Amitabh Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai. The actor was present with his family when his statue was unveiled.

The decision to have a wax model of King Khan was based on feedback received from thousands of visitors and tourists who visit the museum featuring prominent personalities every year.

A spokesman of the museum said that Shah Rukh's statue reflected the growing popularity of Indian films in Britain, which are now watched not only by British Asians but others too.

Guests will be allowed to stand next to Shah Rukh's duplicate and take pictures. The backdrop of the statue could be changed - to one from the star's latest hit "Don", the spokesman added.

Other Indians featuring in the museum include former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.

Move Over Beckham - The King Is Here!

Move over David Beckham - Shah Rukh Khan is here!

That's what the famous wax museum Madame Tussads seemed to be saying as the statues of internationally famous English footballer David Beckham and his wife Victoria were move from their prime spot to be replaced with SRK

SRK's statue is in good company though. You won't be seeing him mingling with the top Bollywood brass of Amitabh Bachchan or former Miss Universe Aishwarya Rai; no, he now rubs shoulders with Hollywood hotshots. His statue is in a special enclosure where it faces Jennifer Lopez and is near those of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Will Smith flanks him on his left and is his nearest neighbour, while John Travolta is another esteemed neighbour.

It seems he stands in a place fit for a king, as Khan's space is bigger than even those of Hollywood stars. The enclosure has been specially created for his statue and includes a plasma television, which will run a 50-minute audio-visual on SRK and a huge poster from Don serves as a backdrop.

Shah Rukh, with wife Gauri, flew into London for the unveiling of his effigy. Tussauds gave Shah Rukh a grand reception at the event that had a desi feel to it with things such as Bhangra music and a garland. The proud duo posed next to his wax statue, which is strikingly like King Khan, thanks to the precise measurements of his physical features taken earlier this year.

As a part of the promotions, Madame Tussauds designed a Bollywood-style poster that said, "Shah Rukh Khan stars in Madame Tussauds". Visitors had a chance to get their personalised copy of the poster, after being photographed with the actor - well, with the statue of the actor.

In addition, the 50-minute biopic showcasing Khan's journey to stardom had its first screening following the unveiling of the statue.

Also, the museum's library has stocked his pictorial biography Still Reading Khan.

All in awe of King Khan.

"I feel like Miss World or Miss Universe, I am so happy!" Shah Rukh beamed, when he unveiled his duplicate at Madame Tussauds in London.

Amitabh Bachchan's wax statue is reportedly viewed by 25 lakh visitors to the museum every year, "one of the top three most viewed" by visitors. With this in mind, Khan was asked whether his debut would change this equation in the museum's popularity charts.

"I have never been someone to calculate numbers," Khan replied, adding, "telephones have numbers, not actors."

When the megastar was asked if he was following in Bachchan's footsteps, again, he replied, "I don't want to sound pompous and self-centred but I came from Delhi and in the last 18 years I have come a long way. Please don't take it away from me."

Asked if the waxwork an accurate replica of him in every department, Shah Rukh smiled and quipped, "I have not seen it without its clothes, so I do not know!"

The 41-year-old star dedicated the statue to his mother, who always believed her son would be honoured in the waxwork hall of fame.

"Very thrilling, very fulfilling and, uh, quite stunning and it was all very nice because it's a mother's desire that I was here, so I miss her, so I feel a little sad also. I wish she was here physically, she would not let anyone else take pictures with the waxwork, she would hog the whole space and, uh, and would have told me that I look very thin - I've lost weight. So, I miss her but I'm just very happy this is happening. I'll make up for it by showing it to my kids." said Shah Rukh somewhat sombrely.

Shah Rukh Khan's bungalow blues

05th Apr 2007 10.01 IST
By Agencies

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan 's lavish bungalow Mannat has been in the news for all the wrong reasons recently.

The Bombay High Court Wednesday asked SRK to submit documents regarding the ownership of the bungalow and those pertaining to structures he had built on a plot adjacent to it.

The court's direction came in response to a PIL filed by the NGO Bhrashtachar Nirmulan Sanghatana.

The court had earlier dismissed another PIL that raised the same issue but the NGO claimed it was challenging the construction on different grounds.

Its main contention is that the construction blocks a motorable road along Mannat that links Bhabha Road and Mount Mary Road in suburban Bandra, which had been marked on the development plan.

The NGO also argued that the plot in question was reserved for an art gallery but the reservation was "illegally" vacated by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) in 2003.

A Division Bench of Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar and Justice S C Dharmadhikari directed Khan's lawyer to submit the documents pertaining to his title to the plot, sanction for the construction and de-reservation of the plot in two weeks.

According to the NGO's counsel Shakuntala Joshi, a road existed adjacent to Mannat that was used by the public.

However, when MCGM approved the plan for construction on the adjacent plot, this 9.15-metre road was not shown on the map at all.

ShahRukh Khan unveils artwork at Madame Tussauds

King Khan's dummy is the third Bollywood star to be displayed alongside Amitabh Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai

The Big B's waxwork is currently "one of the top three most viewed" by visitors, so I asked Khan whether his debut will change this equation in the museum's popularity charts.

Ash-Abhi wedding: Sonia, Khan among few invitees

Ranbir Singh
03 April 2007, Tuesday

Bollywood marriage-of-the-year spotlight will not only be on Ash-Abhi, but also on the handful of top invitees like Sonia, Priyanka and Shahrukh. It may well signify a turning point in soured family ties.

IT'S A MARRIAGE that will be remembered for faces — not only of the Bollywood couple of Abishek and Aishwarya, but the crme de la crme 25 invitees who will bless the two along with the Bachchan family. The ceremonies for the hush wedding — billed as a "close family affair" — would begin on April 18 at a yet undisclosed venue when Big B returns from London and Ash-Abhi rush through their on-hand assignments. Bachchans are reported to have deliberately pruned the invitees' list in view of the deteriorating health of Teji Bachchan.

Among the handful of invitees to the glittering wedding are Kajol, Esha Deol, Hema Malini, Preity Zinta and Sharukh Khan. But the most important invite has gone to 10 Janpath, seeking Sonia and Priyanka's attendance. This invite has gone from Teji Bachhan and Amitabh Bachhan and Ajitabh Bachchan carried it.

Interestingly, Amitabh and Amar Singh visited Sharukh Khan's house and invited him to the wedding.

Will this marriage reveal new folds in politics and Bollywood? Will two families of Bachchans and Gandhis — a close nit 17 years ago — come close again despite the association of Amar Singh with Amitabh Bachhan? And, will this marriage bring two powerful Bollywwod personalities closer and will bring all the controversies to a final and a happy end?

As of now, Ash-Abhi marriage looks set to bring estranged families together.

"SLBB is based on the rivalry between Big B and SRK? That's bullshit news…utter rubbish!" - Bobby Deol

By IndiaFM News Bureau, April 5, 2007 - 02:24 IST

It's being rumoured that the film is based on the off-screen rivalry between Big B and SRK...

Based on the rivalry between Big B and SRK? That's bullshit news… it is completely bullshit and utter rubbish! I would never be a part of film which is trying to show other people's life in that manner. Shakalaka Boom Boom basically is a film which shows that in every profession there is rivalry, there is backstabbing, there are opportunists, and there are manipulators. These characters have been written keeping that in mind. That's how life is and so that's what the film is all about. People can identify with the characters in film.
