Talent and its expressions

Enkayaar, Bollywood Trade News Netowrk

Talent has this trait of lying latent and dormant owing to energy not being channelised or opportunity not being given to express it, but it proliferates out like a lotus in the full bloom and makes the whole world glow in its effervescence. Another aspect of the talent is that one, who owns it, wears it very lightly on his shoulder. This became explicitly manifest in the special KBC-II show where Sanjay Dutt and Boman Irani were invited as celebrity contestants.

Shahrukh Khan zapped the audience, both on the programme and those sitting in front of their TV sets in their drawing rooms when he informed that Sanjay Dutt had won the best shadow guitar player award at an show-guitar playing competition eons ago, and when he was requested to display the talent the hands were flowing as if they were in reality waltzing on the strings of the electric guitar. It was a precocious display of a genius of a mind who could understand the vital nuances of strumming the guitar. Besides, Boman also mesmerized the audience when he sung the famous anthem son' We are the World,' in whole of the multitude of voices which have originally given the play back to this songs, and each expression of vocal chord of its hue, was clearly distinct in the exposition that Boman displayed. Never after Kishore Kumar was a performance on display where a singer could sing in so different voices, of such stretched out octaves in both genders, male and female. Kishore Kumar had tried this antic in DILLI KA THUG where he sung on both male and female voices.

This exposition of talent provides immense possibilities to the film fraternity to experiment with this musical side of both Sanjay Dutt and Boman to come up with a musical that would surely attain a cult status. This is evident from the past of the industry. Amitabh Bachchan used to sing impromptu at the gatherings among the friends, and one find day he became a part time singer. Sanjay Dutt's finesse of guitar playing also reflects a romantic side, which is still unexplored in his case but for a SAAJAN and to a little extent in SHABD, as he has been strait-jacketed into the bhaigiri type of films.

It was a Yash Chopra who had given a change of image and provided an opportunity to the public to experience for themselves the romantic side of AB through KABHIE KABHIE. It is high time someone from the young stream takes up this challenge of coming out with a romantic movie which could give another romantic hero to the silver screen, but of an adult type, and it also seems to be the demand of the time as the puppy romance has started losing its stream. Talent after all is like is water that it keeps on burrowing before it finds a place.

Big B-SRK fued reches London

The rivalry between the Big B and King Khan extends across the oceans and into the dark confines of Madame Tussauds museum in London.

On April 3rd, Shah Rukh Khan will walk the red carpet to inaugurate his wax replica at the world famous wax museum in London and accept the honor of being one of the most popular Bollywood stars in UK's huge Indian community.

SRK will become the third Indian film star, after Amitabh Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, to be so honored by Madame Tussauds.

Reports suggest that his replica 'will not be placed anywhere near those of Amitabh Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai'. Instead, it will be placed next to that of a big Hollywood star.

SRK will fly to London from Malaysia in time to greet a huge number of fans that will gather outside Madam Tussauds museum, which will be barricaded for the grand occasion!

Shah Rukh Khan, 41, is known for superhits such as Devdas, Veer-Zaara, Main Hoon Na. He started his film career in 1992 with Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman. Since then he acted in over 45 films and won a total of 29 awards. He has won Film Fare's Best Actor award an astounding 7 times.

INTERVIEW | SHAH RUKH KHAN

"I try never to be in a bad mood"

Harneet Singh
Posted online: Friday, March 30, 2007 at 0000 hours IST

The number of people who used to stand outside my house has increased by 60 times. It's a traffic jam now.

KBC has just completed two months, what are your thoughts right now?
I'm feeling a little bad that the first season is almost over. I saw last night's episode and I liked it. Lots of memories of the day we shot this one came back. I'm going to miss it.

When the show was first offered to you, how long did you take to say yes?

There wasn't a big debate at all. See, what happened was that Pradeep Guha, who is a dear friend of mine, asked me to do something for Zee. I agreed but then nothing happened. We could not find a project that could justify my price and time. Then STAR approached me for KBC. It was a tried and tested format so there were no apprehensions on that front. I told Samir Nair if Mr Bachchan is not doing it then I'll do it. So in that sense, it took me just about 15 to 20 minutes to decide.

So you were not at all apprehensive?

See, most people try to think of excellence in creativity based on whether people will like it or not. That way, we tend to lose ourselves. As an artiste, I always do something for myself and then hope others will like it. That's how I approached KBC also. The initial feedback that I got from the core team was that I was making it too light and funny. So yeah chances were that it could go wrong but chances were also that it could go right. But I decided to give it a shot anyway. And talking about apprehensions, I have them all the time about working as an actor but you gotta go with what you think is right.

How do you explain the intense speculation on the TRP of the show?

In my mind it's very clear that when people bring figures in creativity then take it, that it has worked creatively. I did get angry when a national newspaper carried a page one story on how the show's TRPs and SRK is falling. I took it personally but soon better sense prevailed. I'm educated enough to know how newspapers and TRP work. See, TRP is not my business. I come into this show believing in my team. I'm an actor, in that sense, an outsider to the set-up so I don't need to concern myself with the figures. I took on the show as a challenge and told myself that I'll do it my way. And I've managed to do that.

Did you learn something about yourself during the show?

I learnt that I could reach the shooting in time. Jokes aside, I always knew that I could pick up things fast but KBC reinforced it. I also realized that I can connect with people and maybe that's why I work as a movie star. It's a nice feeling to know that people don't mind me.

But since there is such a lot of interaction with so many people, do you ever feel that you have to be always in a good mood so as not to leave a bad impression?

I've observed that sometimes the more senior person brings in the mood on the set so I try never to be in a bad mood. I understand that people who come on the show want to take back a good memory. That way, I'm quite magnanimous. Personally, I'm a recluse and I tell myself that I've to be with people for only six hours. So I try to make the most of these six hours since I'm going to be back to my reclusive self anyway. So you can say that I appreciate my own company but at the same time I like being with people also. I feel more emotionally satisfied.

What has been the reaction of the common man to your stint in KBC?

It's there for everyone to see it. Clearly, I can sense a sea of change within people. Whoever I meet at airports or events mentions KBC. I can feel it that they feel they know me a little better. The number of people who used to stand outside my house has increased by 60 times. It's a traffic jam now.

What's the best compliment you've got for the show?

I think it's what Siddharth (Basu) said, "That boy is a joy to watch." Even friends like Ashutosh (Gowariker) send me nice messages like, "Shah, it looks like you've been doing this all your life." Last night my son, Aryan told me, "Papa, you know, this show is awesome." When I asked him what he meant by it, he said, "My friends in school tell me that they see your show and that my dad is awesome."

So when Amitabh Bachchan says that "SRK is fine" on the show, how do you interpret the word fine?

It's ok. It's not that important either to me or to him. I'm sure he watches the show but because there are rumours of problems between us, the word 'fine' takes on another meaning. I don't know how you will take it but to me, a buzz is more important than a singular reaction. I crave for a universal sigh of relief and excitement than an individual reaction.

Is it true that there is soon going to be a biopic on you?

Not at all. The guys at Madame Tussauds want to shoot a documentary on the making of my wax statue. That's all. Anyways, biopics are made on guys who didn't achieve much or who are no longer doing anything.

Is it true that your company, Red Chillies, is getting into television software?

Well, I have a SFX and advertising production unit, which are run by good teams. I'm planning to expand it. I've some friends who feel that as a company we should look into television. I don't think I'll take it on myself but I can lend facilities to a team of people who can handle it well. But nothing is decided as of yet.

Do you feel like it's time to sit down and sort it out with Samajwadi party leader, Amar Singh?

I've nothing to sort with anyone. It's just that I don't like people coming outside my house and making my family uncomfortable. I deserve 500 people who love me standing outside my house for my autograph but I don't deserve 20 fans of someone saying Shah Rukh murdabad. I don't deserve it and neither does my family.

Why did you say that you're a "demented Pathan" in a recent interview?

What I meant was that I'm capable of handling 20 people on my own. I can even handle 20,000 people because I'm a Pathan. I don't mean Pathan as an Islamic term. It's just that like the Rajputs, Pathans are considered the warriors. My father was a Pathan who fought for the freedom of my country so in that sense, I have the same genes. That said, I'm courteous to everyone. It's just that I didn't like certain things said about me. It was said that my wife should apologize. My wife will never apologize to anyone on my account. When I came to Mumbai, I told my friends that whatever work I do in life, I'll never embarrass my family.

Mumbai: It's being touted as Bollywood's biggest wedding, but with just 20 days to go, the guest list for Aishwarya-Abhishek wedding still remains a mystery. Who have Abhi and Ash invited for their wedding and what are the ceremonies gong to be like?

CNN-IBN went undercover and found details that sound straight out of Ripley's Believe it or Not!

A little birdie has it that Ash's previous suitors Salman Khan and Vivek Oberoi have patched up and have been cordially invited for the big wedding.

While Vivek has been chosen the best man for the wedding, Salman will be leading the baraat to Aishwarya's Bandra residence.

We are told that while Vivek is preparing his speech as the best man, Salman is practicing some filmy moves for a baraati jig or two.

If that' snot shocking enough, sample this. Amitabh Bachchan along with good friend Amar Singh personally visited Shah Rukh Khan's residence to invite him for the ceremony on April 20.

We also hear that SRK gifted both Bachchan and Amar singh a Tag Heuer watch as a return gift, putting an end to all the speculation about Bachchan-SRK-Amar Singh feud.

There's more - Rani Mukherji, who once was a strong contender for the Bachchan bahu position, will also attend the wedding at Jalsa.

Among the other surprises – director Ram Gopal Varma may not see eye to eye with him, but will come face to face with colleague Karan Johar for what could be a picture-perfect moment.

So, now as Bollywood has decided to let bygones be bygones for the star-studded wedding, here's your chance to be a part of the wedding too.

Participate in this contest and get there.

SRK Will Miss The Fear

KBC experience will make me a better actor: Shah Rukh Khan

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan has said the experience of hosting television show Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) will make him a better actor.

Speaking to the media recently on the sets of the gameshow at Film City in suburban Mumbai, SRK said he was feeling bad that the show is coming to an end.

"Over the last three months, I met over 100 contestants and interacted with them backstage as well. Belief in god, love for children and sense of humour was common trait among all contestants. There should be an essence of simplicity in our lives. I think the experience of interacting with different kinds of people will make a positive difference in my acting skills," SRK said.

The 52-episode season will end on April 20 and the actor will shoot the last episode on Wednesday. "There will be a sense of emptiness with me when the show ends. Earlier, I felt 52 episodes would be too long and now I am feeling that the season is coming to an end so soon," SRK added.

"I will miss the fear of coming to KBC sets," King Khan expressed.

On his experience on the show, SRK said he had tried to bring humour, entertainment and ease on the sets while interacting with contestants.

Lauding the efforts of the KBC crew for their precised programming, SRK said the backend was amazingly handled for this show, which is a serious entertaining stuff.

When a question on criticism that he was awkward in the initial episodes and later comfortably settled in the role of an anchor was put to him, SRK said, "It is true that I am restless and move a lot. I have read media reports that I was awkward initially. May be it's true. Even Siddharth Basu and other members of the crew would bring it to my notice."

SRK said as the KBC host, he was closest to what he was in real life.

When asked about difference between the show hosted by Amitabh Bachchan and himself, SRK said the difference lay in the personalities of the hosts involved. Each has his own individual style. Novelty of the show has its own success ratio. Besides, it has great production value.

"I have my own style. I cant say whether it was good or bad. I am just doing my job. Comparisons should not have been made. But, they were inevitable. I do not look back on the work I have done. In fact, I do not even watch my own films," Shah Rukh added.

When questioned on the gifts he presented to contestants who did not do well, SRK said "I have a sense of humour and am easy with people. Presenting contestants with gifts was a spontaneous thought. The gifts like my personal watches were given to very young contestants whom I genuinely felt should do well in life."

Presenting Santro cars to nine contestants on Tuesday night's episode was a gesture on part of the car manufacturers to make the contestants feel special. "It was not a commercial aspect. I think I played my part as a host in making my guests feel at home and very special," SRK added.

Shah Rukh said the second season will begin by the end of this year or early 2008 depending on adjustment of his dates with that of Siddharth Basu's Synergy Adlabs and Star India.

Shah Rukh, Juhi team up again

Actors Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla are best of friends off screen. And together they made a happy-go-lucky couple on-screen, too. However, the couple hasn't been seen together in a film for a while now. But soon Shah Rukh and Juhi will play husband and wife in Ravi Chopra's Bhootnath. That'll be a casting coup of sorts, for sure, and yet another golden moment for Shah Rukh, Juhi and their fans.

Waxing lyrical for a change

Posted online: Monday, April 02, 2007 at 0000 hours IST

Baker Street, home to Madame Tussauds in London, has a new look. And what a look it is. The huge dome on top of the fabled wax museum is now draped in an outsized poster of—who else—Bollywood Baadshah Shah Rukh Khan. The poster screams: "King Khan is coming... on April 3, 2007", as long queues of people, including several Indians, look drop-jawed at the face of the megastar and his impish smile. Khan's wax statue will be unveiled at Madame Tussauds on April 3, and publicists are working overtime on a novel way for him to make his appearance on the occasion. Not far away from there, a statue of the world's most famous detective, Sherlock Holmes, stands watching all this with an air of bemusement. Whatever happened to Baker Street? Rod like, he may not want to talk about it. But if the music plays to the sound of Chopin's Fourth Polonnaise in C Minor, good ol' Sherlock may just want to change his mind.

Chopra says the shooting of Bhootnath will be taken up after star Amitabh Bachchan's son Abhishek's wedding ceremonies are over. "we are planning to complete it by July this year. As decided, we will release the film this year," adds Chopra.

In 1963, a film by the same name, directed by Nanabhai Bhatt, was released.

The 2007 version will star Amitabh Bachchan as the main protagonist. The other stars are Juhi Chawla, Rajpal Yadav, Satish Kaushik and others. Shah Rukh Khan will feature in a special appearance. Chopra's assistant Vivek Sharma is directing the film.

This will be Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan's seventh film together. There are no roles for me in Hollywood: Shahrukh

Genting Highlands (Malaysia), April 02: The charm of Hollywood does not seem to attract the "Badshah of Bollywood" Shahrukh Khan as he feels there are no roles for him down there.

"If I were to do a film in Hollywood, then it has to be about a 40-year-old who is brown, short, has lots of hair and an Indian," khan was quoted as saying in a local daily here.

The Bollywood actor said it was not up to him to decide if he wanted to work in Hollywood. "Nobody from there has ever called me. And in my age group, Hollywood already has many actors, so I don't think they need me."

The King Khan was in Malaysia to attend the 10th Zee Cine Awards held here late last night.

The actor took home the audience award for fun entertainer. He enthralled the audience by performing a dance number from his movies 'Don' and 'Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna', both of which did well at the box office in Malaysia.

Khan is well known to most Malaysians and his film Don was shot mostly in the Southeast Asian country.
