Sanjay Gadhvi out of Yashraj; SRK-Saif in 'Dhoom 3'?

DOMINIC FERRAO
INDIATIMES MOVIES

His comments on Abhishek Bachchan seem to have cost director Sanjay Gadhvi his position at Yashraj Films, if rumours are to be believed. Post Dhoom 2 , the director had commented about Hrithik's larger impact in the film, and even reportedly said that Abhishek was finished and beaten. Obviously, dad Amitabh wasn't amused at this running down of beta Abhishek, and immediately lashed out claiming that the director's comment was in bad taste.

Now the latest is that Gadhvi is no long with the Yashraj banner – and if industry wallas are to be believed, this could be a fallout of his earlier comments on Abhishek. The grapevine is already buzzing with the rumour that 'Dhoom 3' will now be directed by either Yash Chopra himself of Aditya Chopra.

Also, rumour has it that this time YRF has zeroed in on two of the Khan boys for the film – the toss up is between Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh and Saif Ali Khan. When we called Yashraj, their spokesperson, Monica Bhattacharya denied any such development saying that nothing had been finalised on the film as yet. As for Sanjay Gadhvi being shown the door, she replied, "All our directors have a three-film contract with Yashraj and Sanjay's contract came to a natural end.

He did 'Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi', 'Dhoom' and 'Dhoom 2', and that's the reason he is no longer with us now." However, asked whether Yashraj would work with Gadhvi again and whether Gadhvi would be called in to direct 'Dhoom 3', Monica side-stepped the question, saying, "How can I comment on what will happen? We haven't even decided on 'Dhoom 3' yet." The director of the 'Dhoom' series, meanwhile, was unavailable for comment despite repeated attempts to contact him.

Sanjay Dutt in KBC 3

By Vickey Lalwani 2007 Bollyvista.com

SRK asked Sanjay Dutt to appear on a special episode of KBC3. Both Dutt and Boman Irani shot for the special episode in Film City.

It all started when Sanju messaged SRK that he liked the show. SRK messaged him back, and an invitation, which Dutt duly accepted followed shortly thereafter.

In 2001, Dutt appeared on KBC with Amitabh Bachchan on the occasion of World Cancer Day, and spoke about the setbacks in his life because of the disease (his mother Nargis suffered from it).

SRK nominated for best actor in Asian Film Awards

Hong Kong's film festival hopes to boost its profile with an inaugural pan-Asian awards ceremony tomorrow that features nominees from Bollywood, Japan, South Korea, Thailand and Iran.

Up for the top acting awards are Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan ("Don"), Gong Li ("Curse of the Golden Flower") and fellow Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi ("The Banquet"), Japan's Ken Watanabe ("Memories of Tomorrow"), veteran Hong Kong actor Andy Lau ("A Battle of Wits") and Taiwan's Chang Chen ("The Go Master").

South Korean pop star Rain was nominated for "I Am a Cyborg, But That's OK," about the relationship between two mentally ill patients.

The problem is that many of the big stars are skipping the event, including Khan.

Despite being a major movie production hub, Hong Kong's film festival has paled in comparison to the better funded Pusan International Film Festival in South Korea, which hosts more world premieres.

Hong Kong organisers hope a star-studded awards event that draws big names from across the region will redirect the world's focus to this bustling financial capital that has seen its once-powerhouse movie industry decline in productivity.

The 1st Asian Film Awards encompasses an unusually diverse mix of nominees that includes some of the biggest names in Asian cinema.

Among the movies competing for best film are famed Chinese director Zhang Yimou's ancient Chinese epic "Curse of the Golden Flower," the South Korean monster thriller "The Host," and "Still Life," directed by Zhang's compatriot Jia Zhangke.

Jia won the Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival last year for "Still Life," set against the imminent demolition of a small town to make way for the Three Gorges Dam project.

The other nominees for best film are Hong Kong director Johnnie To's gangster movie "Exiled," Japan's "Love and Honour," the story of a blind samurai, and the Austrian-Indonesian co-production "Opera Jawa," which incorporates Javanese art and dance.

Chinese director Jia and Hong Konger To are vying for best director against Iran's Jafar Panahi ("Offside"), Malaysian-Chinese director Tsai Ming-liang, South Korean Hong Sang-soo ("Woman on the Beach") and Thailand's Apichatpong Weerasethakul ("Syndromes and a Century").

Despite a topflight shortlist, the Hong Kong organisers haven't been able to draw the star power they were aiming for.

The Hong Kong film festival's director, Peter Tsi, said earlier that he expected most nominees to attend, but some of the most famous nominees have decided to skip the event.

No-shows in the final guest list include Zhang, Gong, Lau, Khan and Watanabe.

Rain and directors To and Jia will attend as will French director Luc Besson.

Veteran movie star Josephine Siao, Hong Kong's most prolific actor in history, and film scholar David Bordwell will receive lifetime achievement honours.

Sanjay Loves SRK's KBC

By Krishna Jewel, AllBollywood.com Staff
March 07, 2007

Following Rani and Preity into the hot seat is none other than our very own Munnabhai!

Sanjay Dutt is an avid viewer of Shah Rukh's show and will now be a contestant on KBC. Sanjay along with Boman Irani recently shot for an episode of the game show.

Apparently Dutt is so much in awe of Shah Rukh that after watching his antics on the show he messaged the quizmaster to tell him how much he loved the show. Shah Rukh messaged him back with a thank you.

Now, we shall see the two come into our homes as they share the small screen soon.

'Om Shanti Om' is like Moulin Rouge - colourful and vibrant

By IndiaFM News Bureau, March 8, 2007 - 10:23 IST

Mayur Puri the young and talented writer is all over the place, with his lyrics vigorously poised with "yuppie" flair sounding easy to ears. From composing for super hits tracks like 'Tu Hi Meri Shab Hai' to assisting for films like Dhoom and Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai this guy has done it all. And now he will be seen in an all new avatar of a screenplay writer. With upcoming films like Om Shanti Om and My Name Is Anthony Gonslves this new kid on the block is surely going places. The writer speaks about his passion for writing and lyricism.

On Om Shanti Om – "It's like Moulin Rouge – colourful and vibrant"

"Farah was writing the screenplay for Om Shanti Om. Then one day I got a call from Red Chilies and they asked me to come over and have a look at the screenplay, I was basically roped in for the dialogues. I also did a little bit of the screenplay along with Farah. I guess one of the reasons why they chose me to write the dialogues was that I had written the script for My Name Is Anthony Gonslves which is been line produced by Red Chilies, so I guess they liked the work I was doing for that film and thus decided to rope me in for Om Shanti Om".

"I don't know how much I can reveal about the film. But it is a typical Farah Khan story which celebrates love and romance. It's like Moulin rouge – colourful and vibrant. Farah being a total entertainer, the way she looks at common things which we might overlook, she will make those things seem funny and entertaining".

"The film isn't a remake of any Hindi film. According to me all Hindi films are remakes of same ideas. We have a set of imagery that we have in our mind. We have all grown up on a fodder of set things in Hindi films. There are similar things like boy falling in love with a girl it happens all the time. The film is not similar to Karz but yes there is a very interesting musical love story which was also the heart of Karz"

On being a lyricist…"I am not a poet. For me to write shayaries and all is difficult"

"Pritam is a good friend of mine. When I came to Mumbai to work as a director- writer I started working for Sanjay Gadhvi's Tere Liye. Pritam was the music director for the film and we used to meet often. Fortunately for me and unfortunately for them I have a good music sense so I have spoiled a lot of their evenings. I used to write a lot of dummy lyrics for them. So gradually Pritam and I became friends. Once he said to me why don't you write lyrics for films you are good at it. At that time my attitude towards writing for Hindi songs was that Ye sab shayar log karte hain and I am not a poet. So for me to write shayaries and all is difficult. But I am glad that Pritam encouraged me and embraced my work. I am happy being a lyricist now but it's not how I started."

On scoring a Hattrick – "Through the song I have celebrated Indian ness, typical middle class thinking, Indian cricket and the lifestyle"

"I am writing for Hattrick and I have written a world cup anthem called 'Wicket Bachao'. Milan wanted to do a song for cricket. But my idea was that if you want to have a song it should be universal and should go parallel with life. Everyone loved the lyrics. Through the song I have celebrated Indian ness, typical middle class thinking, Indian cricket and the lifestyle. The film draws parallels to life and cricket".

My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves – The reel story

"The film's tagline is about ordinary boy with ordinary dreams. It's a story about an ordinary boy next door played by debutante Nikhil Dwivedi. If you hear his dreams they are laughable because he wants to have stars in his hands. He is just a young boy who works in a pub and wants to become a film star. It's a coming of age story and how he fulfills his dreams. It's a fun film".

From writing to direction

"I am just enjoying writing at the moment. After Om Shanti Om and My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves, I also have Harry Baweja's film Love Story 2050. I don't even want to write my film right now because I have so much on my hands at the moment. Once I am done with all these commitments I will start writing. I do have a couple of ideas which I am still working on but nothing is final as yet".

Dhoom 3: Shah Rukh replaced Aamir Khan!

by Debasis Jana

Bollywood's perfectionist hero Aamir Khan turned down Aditya Chopra's offer for 'Dhoom 3'. As per latest, Aamir, who was approached for playing the cop's role, wanted to play the bad guy's role instead. After Aamir's refusal came, Aditya Chopra, who himself will be directing the film instead of earlier director Sanjay Gadhvi, has set to cast Shah Rukh Khan in Aamir's place. Earlier Aditya had planned to cast SRK in the role of bad guy; however now changing his plan he has offered the bad guy's role to Saif Ali Khan. As per latest, Saif has accepted the offer and given his nod to Aditya. Also there's buzz that director Aditya Chopra, who wants to drop all the old faces from the third installment of the 'Dhoom' series, has approached Zayed Khan in the place of Uday Chopra. So if no further change takes place, the 'Dhoom 3' will have three Khans – Shah Rukh, Saif and Zayed playing as three leading guys.

Indian movie star ShahRukh Khan says he could turn director

The Associated Press
Published: March 7, 2007

MUMBAI, India: Bollywood's leading man ShahRukh Khan says he wants to someday try his hand at directing films. But for now, he is still too busy being in front of the camera.

In the meantime, "I'll try and find something that will keep me involved with the process of film making," Khan told Cine Blitz magazine in its March issue. "Maybe five to six years down the line, when it's not so hectic and if I get a chance — maybe a smaller film."

But he would only try out the director's chair once he was sure he could give it his full attention.

"It will be too time consuming and I get really taken in by films," he said. "I'll get into every single detail and every small thing."

Khan, 41, is one of Bollywood's biggest heartthrobs and has acted in nearly 60 movies, including hits such as "Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham" ("Some Happiness, Some Sadness"), "Kabhi Haan, Kabhi Na" ("Sometimes Yes, Sometimes No") and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna ("Never Say Goodbye").

Today in Culture

He is also currently the host of India's version of the popular game show "Who Wants to be a Millionaire."

He said he could be interested in other aspects of the movie business such as setting up a special effects studio.
