Jihad is an inner war: SRK

Born a Muslim and brought up and married to a Hindu, Shah Rukh Khan is Bollywood's brand ambassador. The star of Bollywood, who is all the time all over the place, is troubled lately by the happenings in the Islamic world.

At the same time, he feels it is important for him to stand up and be counted, "to be standing for the goodness of Islam".

As much an ambassador for Islam as Bollywood, Shah Rukh says his childhood fascination with the Ram Lila hasn't changed.

"But as I've grown older, and I see what's happening to Islam around the world, I think it's important that even without full knowledge of Islam, I need to be very clearly standing for the goodness of Islam."

In an interview with the weekly news magazine, Tehelka, the Bollywood icon whose children are being brought up by the tenets of both religions says he stands for what a modern Muslim should be.

"I'd like people to know that Islam is not only about being a fanatic, or radically different, angered person, or one who only does jihad. I'd like people to know that the actual meaning of jihad is to overcome one's own violence and weakness.

If need be, overcome it violently," says Shah Rukh. In an interview where he lays bare his soul, he gives a fascinating insight into his identity as a Muslim, a husband, a father, a son and a brother.

Shah Rukh says of his elder sister, who lives with him: "My sister reminds me everyday that I cannot have a life like my father's." His sister, Lala, was medically described as having a potassium imbalance and physically, she went all wrong.

SRK, who has often spoken of his anguish at his parents' early deaths -- his father when he was 15 and his mother when he was just 25 -- reveals unknown facts about his sister who was traumatised by their deaths. Lala is much better now, but will never be fully well.

"Beautiful girl -- physically and mentally, again an MA, LLB (like his father). But no good. After my father died, she got very shocked. Psychiatry wasn't so big then, it took us about four or five years to find help.

Then it took five-six years for her to get very close to her mom, and then her mom died, so she was really shattered," he told Tehelka.

By the time she came to Mumbai, she was really unwell, and it took time for SRK to earn enough after which he got her treated in London.

When he prays, he says, the closest he comes to a face are his mother and father -- and his dogs! "I love my dog -- Chewbacca. Is that blasphemous?" he asks.

We know of Shah Rukh Khan always talking about his son, Aryan, but so little of his daughter, Suhana. He claims that is because he's basically "shy of women".

He finds it difficult to play too long with her friends too, and adds that he's never seen the inside of his wife's cupboard, or her handbag, or her drawers, or whatever though he married her more than 15 years ago.

Strangely, his closest friends are women -- Farah Khan, Juhi Chawla and Kajol -- and most his male friends like Karan Johar are known to be on the effeminate side, too.

His shyness with women extends to his not being able to "pick up a lover" or make a pass. Even if a girl takes the initiative, he quickly kills it with jesting.

Often rammed for dancing in marriages for money, SRK reveals the why and how: "I do perform at weddings. But it is very difficult to afford what I demand. You have to do it like a show, it has to be in an area where nobody drinks and eats, it will start at 9 pm and end at 11:30 pm, the stage will be 30 by 40 feet, we will make our entries, we will not chat with anyone, we will not eat your food, we will not take pictures with your daughter or daughter-in-law, unless we personally want to. We will come, perform, and we will go away."

The Bollywood Big Dad is not into watching too many films either for fear of getting "corrupted" or "confused" depending on whether it does well or fails. He was supposed to be part of 'Rang De Basanti' and the project was lying with him for about a year.

"I was shocked by the fact that I couldn't read into the script. I just didn't see any of it," he readily admits. Shah Rukh Khan also admits that he didn't like close friend Aditya Chopra's huge hit 'Dhoom 2' because "it lacked sensibility". - (SAMPURN)

TALKING POINT: SRK says he knows he
will be spoken about, good, bad or ugly.

Mumbai: Shah Rukh Khan and Amar Singh's feud made headlines in the past few weeks with the actor calling the Samajwadi Party General Secretary a darinda (devil), at the Filmfare Awards function recently. The actor was promoting a watch brand in Mumbai, and CNN-IBN caught up with him about the protests outside his house.

Rohit Khilnani: It's always great interviewing Shah Rukh Khan since he has an answer to every question. So you are comfortable giving interviews, right?

Shah Rukh Khan: Yes, I'm good doing interviews.

Rohit Khilnani: You have taken the brand TAG forward, it was a part of Don and Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC).

Shah Rukh Khan: Normally, when I endorse something, I do end up having a liking for it. On KBC, it's not a marketing gimmick. I give watches I wear on the days I feel like giving them away.

Rohit Khilnani: You are a family man and there were protests outside your house. Weren't you scared?

Shah Rukh Khan: It happened a while ago and I've said whatever I had to say about it. I think everyone understands my state of mind. I am not someone who reacts to what people say. It's been years since I realised that I will be spoken about, good, bad or ugly. So if I react to it, I would be spending my whole day on it. Yes, I do react to the safety of my kids. I'm glad they are safe and it's my duty to keep them safe.

King Khan on brand SRK, his kids and why he absolutely loves women!

Whose autograph would you want?
I have just asked for a hockey stick because I hear Dhanraj Pillai is coming here and I would definitely want his autograph for myself.

What's one social cause closest to you?
Anything to do with women. I absolutely love women. I'm doing 'Chak De' to encourage them to get into sports. I also want to get some public toilets made for women in smaller cities. I have grown up in Delhi and when I used to drive down to Agra, I would see women actually bathing in open, obviously attracting undue attention. I have a huge amount of respect for the privacy of a woman. I don't even look into my wife's cupboard or her purse. I don't know how I should go about doing it, but I do want to do it someday.

One person you never thanked, but you want to…
I want to thank my father. I never got a chance because I was too young when he died. I want to thank him today because I can see my daughter and son are growing up to be like him.

Would you feel more secure if your mother was around?
I think I would. She would always take up for me.

What do you think of when you want to smile?
I think of all the gifts that God has given me. I think of my kids. Looking at them sleep I smile. I see them coming out of the bathroom with their little towels around their little bodies and I smile.

What's one worry that's on top of your mind now?
I hope my kids are treated as individuals in their own right. It's a tough job, but I try and give them as normal a childhood as possible. I hope my father's genes will help them sail through. He was a good, free-thinking, honest man.

Film star, TV host, youth icon — which describes you best?
I am just an actor, working hard to preserve the image I've achieved. I am a servant of my image. I know I'm working for SRK, the brand. People should also know that. My advice to youngsters would be: Don't be trapped by anybody's expectations of you. Stand by what you believe in. People who mind won't matter and people who matter won't mind it.

Casting coup?

By Taran Adarsh, March 7, 2007 - 03:40 IST

We're not taking names, but you need to do some guesswork…

The premiere production house is planning the third installment of the smash hit and if what's being said is true, the Big Boss of this company will direct the film himself. Reportedly, he has roped in the top Khan to essay a pivotal role, while the other Khan -- not the one who loves to flaunt his physique, but someone who specializes in romantic roles -- has been approached for the second principal role.

If the casting materializes, the two Khans would be working in a film after a gap of four years. Also, it's a foregone conclusion that the film would create a big dhoom when it hits the screens in the latter half of 2008.

Shah Rukh and Sanjay Dutt bond on KBC

By IndiaFM News Bureau, March 7, 2007 - 06:17 IST

After Rani and Preity guess who is going to be on the hot seat with Shah Rukh? Yes it's none other than our very own Munnabhai!

Sanjay Dutt who is an avid watcher of Shah Rukh's show will be seen donning a new avtar, that of a contestant on KBC. Sanjay along with Boman Irani recently shot for an episode for KBC along with Shah Rukh Khan in Film City.

It is said that Dutt is so much in awe of Shah Rukh that after watching his antics on the show he messaged the new quizmaster to tell him how much he loved the show. Shah Rukh spontaneously messaged him back thanking him.

Well seems like KBC has not only helped Shah Rukh enhance his image but has also helped create a bond of long lasting friendship with Dutt.

SRK at Liz-Arun's Wedding Party

Power, page 3 at Liz-Arun party
Meena Iyer | TNN
Source: Print Edition TOI

Mumbai: By 10 pm the fancy cars had begun rolling up to the Godrejs Juhu bungalow as partytime approached for the power and page 3 crowd.

Reports have it that the Charni Road festivities at the Oomerbhoys for newlyweds Elizabeth Hurley and Arun Nayar ended in the wee hours of Tuesday morning. But that didn't seem to dampen any of the enthusiasm as the newlyweds, their foreign guests and Mumbai's Page 3 crowd headed for Parmeshwar Godrej's do late on Tuesday.

Though reports said that Sir Elton John's partner, David Furnish, accompanied Hurley and Nayar to Mumbai, there was no news of the singer himself making an appearance. "But he may just airdrop from the sky like he did at the wedding in Gloucestershire,'' joked a Bollywood actor, who said he'd be sorely disappointed if he didn't get a chance to meet the singing legend.

Zeenat Aman, who lives opposite the Godrejs, made an early appearance. One heard that the industrialists' brigade, including Gautam Singhania and the Ambanis, along with Bollywood heavyweights like Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan, were to make later appearances.

"Parmeshwar asked us to be there between 10 and 10.30,'' said one of the guests. The Bollywood brigade was expected by 11.

Talk is that Shah Rukh, who had to wrap up a celebrity episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati with Sanjay Dutt at faraway Filmcity, would reach only past midnight. Others, like Arjun Rampal, who was said to have flown in especially from Kolkata, was expected to arrive with friends Sanjay Kapoor, Chunky Panday and Karan Johar. "Mallika Sherawat's name is on the guest list, but she can't make it because she is in the US,'' confirmed a trade insider.

While initially it was learnt that about 100 foreign guests and 50 to 70 Indians had been invited for the black-tie affair, the number of arriving visitors appeared to push the guest list past 200. The media brigade was on hand outside the venue, patiently waiting for soundbites and glimpses of any of the star cast. The ubiquitous men in khaki were on bandobast.

Many guests were scheduled to fly to Jodhpur on Wednesday and stay on till Friday for the Indianstyle reception at the Umaid Bhawan Palace and Meherangarh Fort. Something to the tune of Rs 8 crore to Rs 10 crore is reportedly being spent on the festivities there. The theme—a marriage in heaven—is meant to recreate the magic of a celestial wedding.

Civic body demolishes part of stage set for Hurley-Nayar party

Mumbai, March. 6 (PTI): Wedding celebrations for actress Liz Hurley and businessman Arun Nayar ran into some trouble today with the Mumbai civic authorities demolishing part of a stage constructed near the residence of socialite Parmeshwar Godrej for the party she is hosting for the couple tonight.

"There was a structure constructed on the beach in front of the house which was in violation of a High Court ruling. As a result, a few residents of the ward took up the issue with the authorities and a part of the structure has been demolished this morning," BMC officials said here.

The structure had been constructed on the beach near the sea facing Godrej bungalow in suburban Juhu.

Parmeshwar Godrej, wife of Godrej Industries Chairman Adi Godrej, is scheduled to host an exclusive 'black tie' party for the newly-wed couple and a number of celebrities including Shah Rukh Khan, his wife Gauri, as well as several guests who have flown in from London are expected to attend.

The couple, who tied the knot three days ago in Britain and arrived here yesterday, attended another party thrown in their honour by a top industrialist last night. The wedding party will fly to Jodhpur tomorrow where the last leg of the wedding celebrations will begin.

Traditional dancers, a mehendi ceremony and an Indian style wedding ceremony await the Hollywood actress at the Umaid Bhavan Palace.

Chak De India : A Sneak Peek

07th Mar 2007 22.39 IST
By Nikhil Kumar

One man mentoring a hockey team of young and feisty girls. Their determination, ambition and skills are put to test in an ultimate contest with the world's top teams. For the girls it is a chance to make their nation proud. For their coach it is a chance to reclaim his lost honour.

Chak De India is a film about the fighting human spirit. It is directed by Shimit Amin (who made the hard-hitting Ab Tak Chhappan ) and it stars Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role as the coach of Indian girls' hockey team.

The film's story revolves around a coach who returns to the game seven years after he was disgracefully ousted from it as a player. Vidya Malvade plays a Sikh girl with a strong passion for hockey. She wants to join the Indian team but her conservative parents are against it.

Not all is hunky dory when SRK takes over as the coach of the girl's team. However, he coaches the girls and they then go to Australia to play the women's hockey World Cup where their grit, determination and integrity is tested.

'Chak De India' has been shot at various locations in Australia, including Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. While shooting in stadiums, the movie's producers Yashraj Films gave out invitations to people to come and watch the shooting from the stadium seats. This way they managed to gather in the stadium huge crowds that served the movie's purpose well.

'Chak De India' has music by Salim-Suleiman. The screenplay is by Jaideep Sahni while the costumes are by Mandira Shukla.

The film is slated to release in August this year.
