Get real! New York tells B'wood

REALITY CHECK: Directors continue to shoot song and dance sequences in unlikely places like Columbia University.

New York: Bollywood's love affair with foreign locales starts and ends most of the times with New York. The most populous city in the United States has been the background of Bollywood's popular candy-floss romances, like Kal Ho Ha, Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna and Jaan-e-Man all been extensively set in the city that never sleeps.

But if you ask some of the movie lovers in New York, whether Bollywood appeals the hip Starbucks drinking crowd—they say, it's just not their cup of tea.

They say our films often go a overboard in depicting the real city life. So if you remember Preity Zinta in Kal Ho Na Ho who is shows living in the Queens and then going all the way to Manhattan for her daily jog—anybody would easily tell it's a logistical nightmare.

"Shah Rukh is shown getting in a Septa line (train) to go from Toronto to New York. Septa line is a suburban train in Philadelphia. Everyone knows that. This just doesn't work," said New York resident Ryan Michigan.

"Clearly whosoever makes these movies watches lots of Sex and the City," says another resident Soman Chainani.

So while directors continue with their song and dance routine in unlikely places like Columbia University, they perhaps would well listen to a word of advice from resident New Yorkers

"There are lots of places in India which quite looks like New York. Run down cities like Bombay or Bangalore and take pictures there. That's true New York," says New York resident Romilla Karnati.

"One word of advice for the Bollywood filmmakers. Don't shoot on the coldest day of the year in this place. Actresses who dance in little sarees really suffer," said Ryan Michigan.

BOLLYWOOD DREAMS: Penelope is very keen on working opposite Shah Rukh in Indian films.

Los Angeles: Oscar nominated Spanish actress Penelope Cruz is very keen on Indian films and says she would love to work opposite Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan.

Cruz, who has been nominated for an Oscar in the best actress category for her role in the Spanish movie Volver, expressed her respect for the Indian megastar's great body of work.

"I am a great fan of Indian cinema and I would love to work with Shah Rukh Khan," she told www.hollywood.tv at the 3rd Annual Global Green pre-Oscar party held at the Avalon in Hollywood, California.

Cruz hosted the party with other Hollywood A-list stars, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Salma Hayek and Edward Norton.

"I love India. I have the rights to a book and we are going to shoot the movie in India," she added.

Cruz will play the lead in the English-language film, which is a screen adaptation of Javier Moro's original novel Pasion India.

Moro's book was inspired by the true story of 17-year-old Spanish flamenco dancer Anita Delgado who scandalised people in the early 1900s when she agreed to marry an Indian king, Maharaja Jagatjit Singh Bahadur, and settle in his native land.

Cruz has teamed up with some of Hollywood's leading men, including Tom Cruise in Vanilla Sky and Nicholas Cage in Captain Corelli's Mandolin.

She was recently seen with Academy Award winning actor Adrien Brody in Manolete, a film that revolves around the famous bullfighter.

Bollywood's fitness report: It's unhealthy at the top!

NIKHILA PANT

First Amitabh Bachchan, then ShahRukh Khan and now Saif Ali Khan… limelight takes a slow and steady toll on those it favours. Hectic schedules, arc lights, jet lag, negligible rest, hi-stress routines – probably the list will be enough to drive most of us to the doctors. And when it comes to the actors, add to the list stunts, numerous interviews, and promotional campaigns. No wonder, some of our top Bollywood actors are riddled with health problems.

Vikram Kapoor, fitness trainer working with a couple of Bollywood stars, blames the hectic lifestyles, multiple shifts, different time zones and erratic diet for their failing health. "Despite being very conscious about their eating habits, sleeping patterns and fitness, most of the actors fall prey to illnesses.

Some of them even carry their exercise equipments wherever they go."

Satyajit Chaurasia, currently the personal trainer for Hrithik, Aamir, Saif and many others, maintains that while an extra hour of cardio-vascular exercise may burn off the extra calories gained from drinking alcohol, there is no exercise to undo the effects of smoking, something that top stars like Shah Rukh, Saif and Salman are addicted to. "Fitness regime is like riyaaz, one should be very dedicated and focused. That is where Hrithik and Aamir score over others, even if that means exercising at 1 in the night." In fact, fitness experts feel that actresses are more concerned about their fitness. And who is the fittest of them all? "Aishwarya, Bipasha and Rani," are the unanimous choices. Kapoor has given kickboxing classes to Madonna and feels that international celebs are more aware about the kind of exercise that would suit their body type while the "Indian stars are just now realising its importance. There are some who still do try and skip their routines when they can."

ShahRukh Khan

Ailment: Suffers from back and knee pain. Underwent a surgery for his back in 2003

Age: 42

Fitness Regime: Hyperextension based exercises for strengthening the back

Money riding on SRK: Rs 220 cr

Let's admit it - SRK is good in KBC III

AGKSPEAK

A G Krishnamurthy / New Delhi February 23, 2007

Irrespective of the bias against the anchor in the market — the show rocks!

What I've liked

KBC-III. Much talked about, the series has been the focus of many columns, analysis and audience participation programmes of late.

But rather than comparing this series with its predecessors, I would like to assess the show on its own. This is a show that hinges around its anchor and I must admit that the present host, Shah Rukh Khan, is coming through as a commendable one.

The show, of course, has been engineered very effectively. Every aspect of it, the script, the promos, and the mood have all been re-crafted to echo the host's persona. In this case, youthful, charming, suave, urban and lighthearted.

Shah Rukh rises to the occasion flawlessly every single time, delivering his lines with characteristic charm and ease. A word here about his clothes — his wardrobe too seems to be very carefully put together, so much so he looks straight out of a fashion magazine. Every show has him in a tasteful, well-turned out ensemble.

I can't think of a single area where this show suffers from lack of detailing. From the moment the host steps on to the show till the credits roll on screen, he is able to carry the audience along. The much famed finger-biting suspense that the show is well-known for continues to be present even in this series quite admirably, I thought, despite the jocularity of the host. To have achieved that balance too is quite a feat.

So here's my take on KBC-III. It is a very good series. Regardless of its history, its scores on the ratings chart and so on…if assessed for what it is, the show's creators and its host couldn't have done a better job. Long may it reign.

What I've learned
Body talk
Experts have concluded that it takes only 90 seconds for a stranger to form an impression about you — especially in formal, business situations where an introduction invariably takes places in a highly charged and judgmental environment.

Everybody is sizing each other up and this is how the cookie crumbles: A huge 55 per cent of the first impression you make is formed by your body language, a non-committal 38 per cent is awarded to your articulation and a meagre 7 per cent to content! I went through most of my career blissfully unaware of the nitty-gritty behind a "Hello, I am so and so…" but looking back on all my first encounters with clients and colleagues, I realise that there is a lot of truth behind this analysis.

A lot of what went into my "gut' feeling about people lay in the volume of communication that preceded the actual conversation. Come to think of it, I would invariably make up my mind whether I liked, disliked, trusted or was suspicious of a person long before we actually had a conversation!

The rest was just a confirmation of my initial impression. Every single detail gives you away in an encounter — the firmness or the slackness of your handshake, the length of your gaze — stare too long and you will be considered rude and intrusive, too little and it means you are ignoring their presence. The ideal length of a look apparently is 10 seconds. Look away after that, else your intentions will be misconstrued!

The general impression is that most people react positively when you have pleasantness about your face all the time, if you know how to listen and then answer, rather than doing a "fastest finger first" and blurting out an opinion before you understand the context, much like youngsters are trained to do these days. "Know-it-alls" are persona non-grata and again, oddly, most newcomers seem to have the impression that expressing an opinion on everything is a good thing.

To sum up, even though the extent body language can impact your career can be frightening, the good news is that if you are a good person your personality will manifest itself in subtle ways to win the day, even when all else seems against you…

SRK returns in Don II

Farhan: Shah Rukh Khan will only act, not produce the sequel!

Farhan Akhtar says he will make a sequel to his stylish remake of Don, with Shah Rukh Khan again playing the baddie hero. Bandra boy Farhan had considered making a sequel, if Don turned out to be a hit, which it did, both in India and with audiences around the world. It was also critically acclaimed for its crisp, new-age take on the Bachchan classic.

We reminded Farhan, son of legendary Bollywood writer Javed Akhtar, of his desire to make a sequel. He said: "I know I said this, and I will make Don II, after this new project." The 'new project' that Farhan spoke of is a film he has called Voice from the Sky, which he is currently scripting. "I have started work on Voice (though I may later change the name). Right now I am waiting for the release of Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd," Farhan smiled.

His waiting ends today (Friday) with the release of Honeymoon Travels..., a gentle comedy far removed from the action-packed Don. Shah Rukh had spoken of his desire to produce the sequel to Don last year and we asked Farhan if this was happening. "Shah Rukh will be back as Don but no, he will not produce the film," Farhan said.

SRK had also said he would be "more evil in the next Don," and so it is likely that the details of the story or at least the plot has been discussed if not fleshed out with the team that made the first movie. Others in the first movie were also excited by news of the sequel. Chunky Pandey, who is shot by Shah Rukh in the opening sequences of the film said: "If Don II is made, then perhaps I'll be back in the film. I was shown to have been shot by Don, but not shown dead. So there's a chance the producers might call me again!"

One of the new brigade of Bollywood along with Karan Johar, who have redefined storytelling through modern and upper-middle class (and rich) protagonists, Farhan is also credited with taking Hindi movies a notch up to compete with the best in the world in production values. His first movie Dil Chahta Hai (2001), set in his neighbourhood of Bandra, was the first film of its type.
Co-producing Honeymoon Travels... with his partner Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan was also supposed to act in the film, a part that eventually went to Abhay Deol. The handsome director will now debut in an English film to be released later this year, Fakir, directed by ad filmmaker Anand Surapur.

Will Shah Rukh sign film with Penelope Cruz?

DOMINIC FERRAO
INDIATIMES MOVIES

It's official, folks. Shah Rukh Khan is the most wanted Khan as far as Penelope Cruz is concerned. The actress went on record recently to say that she would love to work with SRK. What's more, she informs that she already has the rights to a book on India and she plans to shoot it here. The book, is reportedly Javier Moro's novel Pasion India , and relates the inspired version of the true story of a 17-year-old Spanish flamenco dancer Anita Delgado who scandalized people in the early 1900s when she agreed to marry and settle down with an Indian king, Maharaja Jagatjit Singh Bahadur. Her comment definitely raises speculation about SRK being signed for the role of the king. Now the question is, will SRK give his nod and return the compliment?
