SRK and I have a secret pact: Big B

Rajeev Masand

Mumbai: The talks about rivalry between Bollywood's Badshah Shah Rukh Khan and Big B Amitabh Bachchan have been inevitable ever since it was announced that SRK would take over the 'hot seat' from the ageing icon in Star TV's reality show Kaun Banega Crorepati 3.

So what does Amitabh think of SRK's performance on KBC 3?

CNN-IBN's Entertainment Editor Rajeev Masand caught up with Big B and spoke to him about his much talked about rivalry with King Khan and the new KBC.

Rajeev Masand: Are you surprised by all the attention and interest that seems to exist about your supposed rivalry with Shah Rukh Khan?

Amitabh Bachchan: I'm not surprised. I know this is all a media build and therefore we take it very lightly and play along.

Rajeev Masand: Do you find yourself being provoked very often to answer all these sensational questions just keep the controversy going?

Amitabh Bachchan: Yes I actually said it in one of the programmes that you have no idea how much these TV channels are paying us to keep this war going. Shah Rukh and I have a little secret pact.

Rajeev Masand: The last time I asked you whether you had seen KBC 3, and you said didn't have the time...

Amitabh Bachchan: But now I have.

Rajeev Masand: And what do you think?

Amitabh Bachchan: It's fine. It's a wonderful format actually. And Shah Rukh is doing a fine job. He has made it very light hearted. My brief when I was doing it was that it has to be dramatic, suspenseful and full of character, which is what I did. But he is fine.

Rajeev Masand: They say that the ratings of KBC 3 are nowhere close to that of the time that you did it. A lot of people ofcourse feel that KBC is just not the same without you.

Amitabh Bachchan: Yes?

Rajeev Masand: You don't think so?

Amitabh Bachchan: I think if anyone did KBC it would be successful because of the format is good. It has been running successfully in 80-90 countries across the world. I'm not doing that and neither is Shah Rukh. So what is the reason? The reason is that the game itself is very powerful.

Sneak Preview: Om Shanti Om(OSO)

Producer: Red Chillies Entertainment
Director: Farah Khan
Starring: Shah Rukh Khan, Shreyas Talpade, Deepika Padukone, Arjun Rampal, and Malaika Arora Khan
Music: Vishal-Shekhar
Lyrics:
By: Samir Dave

Credit must be given to Farah Khan for going with the nostalgia evoking title, "Om Shanti Om" for her second directorial venture. The first thing that comes to mind upon hearing that title is an image of Rishi Kapoor dancing on a giant spinning record trying not to trip on his wide bell bottom pants in Shubhash Ghai's "Karz". That classic tale of reincarnation and a killer in the form of Simi Garewal has been burned into the collective memory of any Indian who grew up during that time.

Going for the built in intrinsic nostalgic value of the title, Farah Khan has chosen a reincarnation theme for her second film. The story centers on an artist who grows up in the seventies (perhaps watching Karz), meets the love of his life and shortly thereafter suffers an untimely demise. He is immediately reincarnated and the story flash-forwards to the present day.

Haunted by the memories of his past life and love, he attempts to not only solve the mystery of his death, but also reunite with the love of his past life.

The movie is apparently "inspired" by the Hollywood movie, "Chances Are" wherein a man is reincarnated and immediately attempts to find the wife from his previous life. The problem is that she is now much older than him and does not believe that he is the reincarnation of the man she once loved.

The music for the film was to have been composed by A.R. Rahman, but he wanted 33 percent of the music rights/profits, so T-Series balked and ended their discussions with him. Instead, the music baton was handed to maestros Vishal-Shekhar (Dus, Honeymoon Private LTD, Bluffmaster). The addition of these two-music directors will be a bonus as it adds to the anticipation of this follow-up project to Main Hoon Na (Farah Khan's directorial debut). One does wonder, why Farah did not go with Anu Malik this time, as his soundtrack to Main Hoon Na was a blockbuster. Still, we are guaranteed a fresh sounding soundtrack with Vishal-Shekhar and hopefully no reincarnated music. The master poet Gulzar will write lyrics.

Special mention must be made that Farah's husband Shirish Kunder (director of Jaan E Mann) will be handling the editing on this movie as he did on Main Hoon Na. Also, apparently Skakira, who is a big fan of SRK and is acquainted with Farah as a choreographer, is in talks to make an appearance.

The movie features Shah Rukh Khan as the lead and introduces supermodel Deepika Padukone as the main love interest. The supporting cast includes Arjun Rampal (Don) and Shreyas Talpade (Iqbal, Dor). Both SRK and Deepika Padukone are getting rave reviews for their performances in the dailies. The actor to watch out for though, is the talented Shreyas Talpade.

One can expect that the movie will be in the same tone as Main Hoon Na, and will be a light hearted romp with excellent music. Only time will tell whether this reincarnated movie will please the movie going audience. With the talent involved, expectations are running high that this movie won't be a reincarnated bomb, but rather a reincarnated hit ala Main Hoon Na.

By Subhash K Jha

Divulges the source, "At one point Mallika high-handedly declares that she would like the three Khans Shah Rukh, Aamir and Salman to serve her meals. And when Karan cockily asks her which hero's butt she likes best, Mallika changes the topic to female butts and declares she likes Bipasha butt best."

Will he, won't he?

Saif Ali Khan is slated to anchor the Filmfare Awards this weekend, but his sudden hospitalisation over the weekend has raised a big question mark.

Will he be out of hospital in time to make it to the stage or are the organisers already on the lookout for a replacement?

It is learnt that Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla were initially considered for the anchors, but eventually Saif was roped in as co-host with SRK. Now that Saif is unwell, will SRK go solo? (The awards will be held at Yashraj Studios in Andheri on February 24, followed by a bash at the same venue.)

Meanwhile, Saif's father Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi has been barring visitors from calling on his son at Lilavati Hospital.

Apparently, the array of stars visiting the ailing actor at all hours of the day and night has put heavy strain on hospital authorities, so Pataudi has taken matters into his own hands.

Just sending across a 'Get well soon' message and your good wishes is perfectly fine with the Pataudis, thank you very much!

Tag Heuer eyes to topple Omega, Rado

PTI[ SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2007 11:00:00 AM>

NEW DELHI: World's leading luxury products group, LVMH is charting out an aggressive strategy in India for its premium watches brand 'Tag Heuer' to dislodge 'Omega' and 'Rado' from the top slot in the next three years.

"Currently, we are the number three brand in India. In the next three years we are aiming to be the number one brand in premium watches in India," LVMH Group Director South Asia Ravi Thakran told media.

At present the premium watches market is led by Omega and Rado, he added. Thakran said the company has charted out an aggressive retail expansion strategy to enhance volumes. "In the next 18 months we are planning to have 30 boutiques for Tag Heuer in addition to the seven we currently have," Thakran said.

The company is looking at the franchise model for the retail expansion, which will be taking place in the major metros across the country, he added. Riding high on the returns from its superstar endorsement by Shah Rukh Khan, the company has been achieving fast growth in India.

"Our sales (of Tag Heuer) are in five digits now and is amongst the fastest growing business in India for us," Thakran said, without disclosing the exact figures. He said roping in Khan as its brand ambassador has proved to be a decisive step as the equity of Tag Heuer has soared manifolds.

Why is Gauri scolding Shah Rukh?

by Debasis Jana

Bollywood king Shah Rukh Khan is in a mess now, especially when he's coming back to his home after spending a hectic hour on KBC sets, he's not getting a very warm welcome from his beloved wife Gauri. Gauri is apparently scolding him for bringing all petty gifts to home. But SRK doesn't know what to do.

Actually contestants and audiences in KBC are leaving no stone unturned to come near to its new host Shah Rukh and giving gifts is one of the easy ways they are doing to meet him. The gifts include posters , postcards and other petty things and Shah Rukh doesn't want to leave the tokens of love behind him in the studio. In stead, he brings them back home. We heard, Gauri has warned Shah Rukh not to bring all these gifts. She has told him clearly that she isn't going to store all the things in his home. It wouldn't be looking very nice, if Gauri throws all his 'tokens of love' into the bin, better he leaves them in studio.

KBC News - Khan's generosity doubles!

Khan gives not one but 2 watches this time!

Shah Rukh Khan is developing the reputation of being a softy at heart both in his reel life and real life. Finding it difficult to see his contestants go empty handed especially when the crash is of a significant amount.

Last night Sakharam Chopde, 48, from Buldana reached Hot Seat. Sakharam, whom SRK fondly calls Bapu, wanted to use the prize money for his two daughters' marriages. Being the father of a daughter himself, Shah Rukh, struck a special bond with Bapu and his wife who had accompanied him to KBC.

Bapu played brilliantly throughout the programme and steadily reached the 25 lakhs mark. However, that question left Bapu in doubt and he decided to flip the question. The next question was quite tough and Bapu gave the wrong answer thereby losing almost 50 per cent of his winnings and had to settle for 6,40,000 rupees.

Feeling bad for his loss Khan decided to gift him two watches for his daughters as well as 2 autographed photographs of himself in return for a promise – that Bapu would invite him for his daughters' wedding!

Shah Rukh says the watches, which are worth close to 90,000 rupees each, are a "wedding gift for the girls from him."

If only all of us could have such sparkling marriage gifts!

SRK: A friend indeed!

Eagle Eye, Bollywood Trade News Network

Shah Rukh Khan's production Red Chillies' MY NAME IS ANTHONY GONSALVES is nearing completion. The film directed by E Niwas of SHOOL fame is slated for release sometime this year. Buzz is that the lead star is a friend of SRK and knowing how magnanimous the badshah is, he has agreed to produce the flick. The talking point of the film is the look that has been given by designer Karishma Trehan. The designer had a tough time keeping the theme of the film in mind as well as making each character stand out from the other. Word has it that Lilette Dubey is maha khush with her outfits while Amrita Rao, is wondering why she was the only one left out. Incidentally, her outfits are being designed by another designer. Another talking point is the name of the film. After DON and KBC is SRK trying to do all that AB did or is doing?? Remember the song My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves from Manmohan Desai's AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY???
