'I love being called a ladies' man'

By: Upala KBR
February 26, 2007

Who'd have thought that the brooding Ajay Devgan enjoys getting attention from the opposite sex?

Speaking My Mind: Ajay Devgan in Raj Kumar Santoshi's Halla Bol
Ajay Devgan is perceived as an intense and aloof actor, but few people know the wittier side to the actor, which showed itself as we cornered him for a chat.

Read on as the actor discusses his website, cuts to size rumours of his much-hyped cold war with Shah Rukh Khan, and why he will never gossip over Koffee with Karan.

Fans at your website ajaydevgan.net have said that Omkara should have got more nominations.

I have replied to fans on my website. I do not attend awards functions because awards don't matter to me. I am thankful to the people who think Omkara or I should be more deserving of awards. The biggest award for me is that they feel this way.

Did you launch your website recently?

There was always a website, but it wasn't an interactive one. Now, I try my best to keep in touch with my fans and chat with them often.

People close to you said Omkara was sabotaged by the Karan Johar-Shah Rukh camp. Do you agree?

No, never. There were a couple of media persons who were unnecessarily pulling down the film at that time and I was upset. I don't know why they were doing it, but I agree with Shah Rukh when he says that a good film can never be sabotaged.

What is this so-called animosity between Shah Rukh and you?

I think Shah Rukh and I need to sit down, talk and figure it out amongst ourselves (laughs). Both of us insist that there is no problem, but the media insists there is one so maybe the media knows better! What Kajol said is true. It's a misconception that if two people are not friends then they must be enemies.

Would you attend his party if he invited you?

If I feel like going that day, I will go. It has nothing to do with Shah Rukh per se, just that I don't socialise much.

Will you do a film with SRK?

Why not? If it's a good script and I like my character and director, I will do it.

Will we ever see you on Koffee with Karan?

No, and it's got nothing to do with Karan! I am uncomfortable about appearing on such programmes and Karan understands that.

You had two good films last year — Omkara and Golmaal — but you didn't hype that fact. Are you laidback or simply not ambitious?

I could be laidback, but if you're asking me to shout from the rooftops, saying, 'I've had two hits last year', I won't do it. I don't believe in self-promotion. I'd rather concentrate on good work than create false hype and fall into that trap of stardom and ego. I'm happy that I had two releases in completely different genres.

Are you satisfied with where you are in life?

Yes. I am trying to do good films. There's Anubhav Sinha's Cash, Ram Gopal Varma's Sholay, Raj Kumar Santoshi's Halla Bol, Rohit Shetty's comedy thriller Sunday and Golmaal 2.

In Raj Kumar Santoshi's Halla Bol, you play asuperstar called Samir Khan. Is it based on actors like Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan?

No it's not based on any actor. It is about stars being vulnerable in spite of getting what they want. Can stars live up to the hype that they have created in their personal lives? Rajji has made a brilliant film and everyone has given a great performance.

There was a buzz that you were unhappy with Nisha Kothari as your heroine in Sholay.

I had no clue about this. When I read about it, both Ramu and I were shocked. When I decide to do a film, I trust the director implicitly. Ramu and I had discussed who should play the character before starting the film, so why should I have any problems with Nisha? I have complete faith in Ramu's choice.

You are non-controversial, yet you have the image of a ladies' man.

It's not that I contribute to the image in any way, but yes, if there is an image like that then I have reason to be happy. I love being called a ladies' man!

Recently, Kajol said you make a better father than a husband…

I need to discuss this with her, but I agree with her completely! But I have to find out why she thinks of me that way.

Do you give as much time to Nysa as a non-starry father would?

Yes, I do. Sometimes, I try to give much more. That's a conscious attempt.

Do you do it out of a sense of responsibility?

No. As a responsible father, I need to spend time with her but I do that because I crave and enjoy it. It's all mixed together. When you just do things out of a sense of responsibility, you get fed up after a point.

What's the latest toy that Nysa is demanding from you?

She doesn't want toys. Most of the time she just calls me home to spend time with her.

How did you spend your seventh wedding anniversary?

I don't like talking about personal things, but a quiet dinner and spending time with family is the ideal way.

Ajay Denies Cold War

[26 Feb 2007>

Ajay Devgan, the intense actor, has denied that he had a cold war going on with Shah Rukh Khan and that his Omkara was sabotaged by Karan Johar- Shah Rukh Khan Camp. However, he does agree with the view that there were some people who wanted to pull down the film but a good film always works at the box office so did the Omkara.

However, going to a Shah Rukh Khan hosted party depends on the fact whether he had the time and mood to go in a party. On co-starring with Badshah Khan in a film, he has no objection provided the role and the director suit him. He does agree that he is a laidback person and will never appear on the shows like Koffee with Karan.

Ajay enjoys the title of being a ladies man but denies doing anything to gain this image. He is playing the role of a superstar, Samir Khan, in Rajkumar Santoshi's ' Halla Bo.' The film tries to capture the vulnerability of a superstar. The actor has all praise for Santoshi and other actors in the film for doing the brilliant work.

Similarly, in Ram Gopal Varma's ' Sholay', Ajay is playing the character of Veeru, earlier played by Dharmendra. He has full faith in the director's vision and has no issue with Nisha Kothari, who is playing the role of Basanti, earlier played by Hema Malini in the original Ramesh Sippy's ' Sholay.' His forthcoming films include Anubhav Sinha's ' Cash,' and Rohit Shetty's ' Sunday', ' Golmaal 2' besides R G V'S ' Sholay' and Santoshi's ' Halla Bol.'

Shah Rukh Khan's sweet little gestures!
26th Feb 2007 22.07 IST
By Aparajita Ghosh

Shah Rukh Khan is known to be very considerate towards his co-stars in films.

It is not an uncommon knowledge that SRK often gives gifts, writes thank-you notes or throws parties to express his hospitality towards his co-stars and even crewmembers.

And when he takes on the role of a producer, it goes without saying that those working with SRK will surely get a taste of his hospitality.

Shreyas Talpade and Malaika Arora are among those who have recently been touched by SRK's compassion. The two are working in Farah Khan's next film Om Shanti Om , produced by SRK's Red Chillies Entertainment.

It is learnt that on the very first day of shooting, SRK asked Shreyas what he liked to each for lunch. Shreyas told him that he was very fond of Gulab Jamuns. Then what, from the next day onward, Shreyas's lunch invariably contained Gulab Jamuns.

However, Shreyas has a very absurd way of eating Gulab Jamuns. He dips them in dahi (curd) before eating them. When SRK saw Shreyas eating Gulab Jamuns this way, he said: "Gulab Jamun ki to waat laga di".

And then on Shreya's birthday, SRK and Farah Khan gave him a surprise gift. They gifted him a huge card that was signed by everyone in the shooting unit.

'Om Shanti Om' also has Malaika Arora playing a small role as a superwoman who dresses in a red gown and hops over the rooftops.

After Malaika completed the shooting of her scenes in the film she received a gift hamper from SRK and Farah. The hamper contained flowers, greeting cards, a Tag Heuer watch and a cell phone.

Malaika says the hamper contained exactly the things she needed.

"It is these sweet little gestures and personal touches by Red Chillies Entertainment that makes it so much fun to work with them," says Malaika.

'Om Shanti Om' is a love story set in Bollywood. The film's first half will be set in 1970s. Art designer Sabu Cyril has created the film's sets.

The film also stars Deepika Padukone (opposite SRK), Kiron Kher and Arjun Rampal . Farah is roping in several Bollywood celebrities to make cameo appearances in the movie. They include Rishi Kapoor , Subhash Ghai and Farah's husband Shirish Kunder .

* i just think that srk is just tooooo sweet and adorable! 😳 ... he is just a brilliant human being, i dont think many stars do that, especially superstars lyk SRK!, hes really a great actor and human being! 😳

Fair One Filmfare 2006

By Kkomal Seth & Gautam Seth

Fair one Filmfare 2006 was a rocking affair. Bollywood's most sought-after film awards sponsored by Elder Pharmaceuticals leading brand fair one Fairness cream was held on Saturday at Mumbai's plush Yashraj Studio. The fun and excitement quotient, of course, remained the same. The evening belonged indisputably to three films, which divided the honours between them: Rang De Basanti, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's postmodern take on pre-independence revolutionaries, Omkara, Vishal Bhardwaj's dark and hard-hitting adaptation of Othello and Lage Raho Munnabhai, Raj Kumar Hirani's endearing look at Mahatma Gandhi through a gangster's eyes. Anuj Saxena, Director-Marketing Elder Pharma says, "I think awards this time were truly different and magnificent. In my opinion this is the way awards should be held with style and panache. I am quite sure that the super success of this event will pull more people towards it next year". Anuj Saxena presented the award to Kangana Ranaut along with Sony's Kunal Das Gupta for Sony Fair One Face of the year award. Mr. Jagdish Saxena and Sneh Saxena presented the award to Kangana Ranaut for the best debut. Coincidently they presented both these awards to Vidya Balan Last year. While RDB swept up five of the main awards (Best Film, Best Director, Best Music, Best Cinematography and Best Editing) as well as Best Actor (Critics) for Aamir Khan and the R D Burman award, Omkara's tally was a eight and Lage Raho Munnabhai's five. The Best Actor and Best Actress awards went to Hrithik Roshan for Dhoom 2 and Kajol for Fanaa. Through the evening MC Shah Rukh Khan kept the audience in splits with his one-liners and deadpan asides. Samples: "My resolution this year: Main Bachchan saab ki koi bhi film nahin karoonga.' SRK brought the house down, reminding viewers of the laugh-riot he had created with co-host Saif Ali Khan at the Filmfare awards function a few years ago. TALK
Spill the Beans
Koffee with Karan needs a large dose of caffeine please
Shailaja Bajpai
Whatever happened to Karan Johar and his merry band of superstars? Why have they reduced themselves to a gaggle of giggling, gossiping, gurgling geese? Why do they assume that each time they assemble on television, they have to behave as though they are at a kitty (sic) party at one another's home? And, isn't it awfully sad that the people we admire most on the big screen can be so disappointing on the small one? Anyone who watched the initial episode of Koffee with Karan on Star World's new season will know that Karan Johar invited—who else—but his best Bollywood (and should we add, bosom?) buddies—Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan, the same pair who had appeared in the opening episode of the first season. Since this might strike everyone as rather repetitious (not to say incestuous), Rani Mukerji was added to the cast of clowns for the following reasons: she is Kajol's cousin, once-removed from being liked; Shah Rukh's co-star in Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna and worked in Johar directorial debut a decade ago, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, which this mnage-a-four was celebrating. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, she was not part of the inner Karan, Kajol, Khan circle (because she did not have a name beginning with K?)
< = src="http://banners.expressindia.com/banner/eiintel.js"> < = src="http://banners.expressindia.com/adsnew/adjs.php?para=no&n=064913528&what=zone:470&target=_blank&exclude=," =text/>
What followed was the most puerile behaviour since, well, since the last time the three Ks had a rendezvous with television. The only occasion when Kajol spoke coherently was without Shah Rukh next to her, while describing Fanaa and acting with Aamir Khan. The moment Shah Rukh flopped down on the sofa, she was reduced to a simpering simpleton who couldn't keep her hands off him. Is this the effect Shah Rukh has on perfectly sensible and intelligent women? Shah Rukh Khan made one very cogent remark about the media and film stars. One. Otherwise, he basked in the company of his three favourite co-stars Kajol, Rani—and Karan. Shah Rukh is a witty, clever, eloquent man, so why does he believe that every time he opens his mouth on the talk show, he has to be funny and oh-not-so-funny with silly jokes about homosexuality (or was it bisex?). Yes, he spoke about "waking up next to'' Karan and the three movie musketeers laughed heartily. Rani, poor dear, was the butt of their collective inane sense of humour. When asked what she would do if she was airborne with Kajol and Shah Rukh and one of them had to jump (or some such) she replied in a saintly fashion that she would save her cousin and the man to her right. "Oh please!'' squealed Kajol. Rani appeared prosaic and unglamorous because she wasn't willing to bitch or string together in-house jokes (well, how could she when she isn't one of the inmates?). She was the butt of their bitchiness (sorry, but there is no other term for it) and played Mother Teresa to boring perfection. As for Karan, he had forgotten the definition of a talk show. It's meant to get people to "talk" about themselves, their work, their private lives, whatever. It's meant to regale the audience with information about personalities who we don't otherwise know about—anecdotal, personalised, frank. K with K was none of the above. It was an exercise in self-idolisation (if there is such a term) in which everyone (but Rani) admired their own cleverness and then Shah Rukh's. He (of course) won the hamper. Not only that. Children, asked what they thought of the three stars, were drooling: "Oh, SRK, you are so sexy''. Another: "You are my God!" Is that what we want to hear? Is that what Shah Rukh needs to hear? The next Koffee session was no better. It's hard to believe that Priyanka Chopra was a Miss World when you see her in such awe of the deified filmmaker. Hrithik Roshan tried hard to be trs cool, but his Juhu roots surfaced when he called Chopra "Dude". And wouldn't we love to gift the film flock a dictionary? The only adjectives they know of are "rocking", "hot", "sexy" and "mind-blowing". Mallika Sherawat on tonight's show seems to promise entertainment. We hear the self-judged diva refused to shoot for the show's behind-the-scenes portions. She's also delightfully politically incorrect and admits to being starry to feed her superiority complex. And the icing—she carried a Do Not Disturb sign to be hung outside her green room door. Wonder how the clique-loving filmmaker/anchor took to that. Karan J should take lessons in the art of talk show anchoring from none other than the woman his chums and he sneer at—Simi Garewal. For all her slightly irritating persona and woman-in-white fashion statement, Garewal has the ability to draw out her guests and leave us knowing more about them at the end of the show than at its beginning.

After watching Koffee with Karan, you don't want to know any of them

Photo Feature: Preity and Rani play holi with SRK
By IndiaFM News Bureau, February 26, 2007 - 06:45 IST

Come March 1st 2007 and the entire nation will rejoice in the colourful festival of Holi. And when it comes to celebrations, Star Plus knows how to pull it off best. Preity Zinta and Rani Mukherji graced the hot seats in a special Holi episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati.

The Don of the show, Shah Rukh Khan, flanked by two Bollywood beauties, opened the show in sheer style. He hummed a song from his film Don and escorted the duo to their seats. Living upto the true spirit of 'Holi Hungama', SRK introduced the lifelines of the show as 50:50 Ki Pichkari Hai; Audience Poll Ki Gulaal Hai; Phone A Friend Ka Rang Hai and Flip Ki Gujjia Hai!

Rani and Preity played in full spirit, as there were moments of anxiety and laugher alike. They announced that they will donate the prize amount to Holy Family Hospital and Himachal Pradesh Red Cross institutes. The show, of course, could not be complete without sweets and water balloons.

The audience was left star-struck in the true sense as Shah Rukh, Rani and Preity danced away to Mahi Ve. This special KBC episode will be aired 1st March on Star Plus.

Shah Rukh Khan: 'Time' for a good cause!

Recently SRK gave away a very expensive branded watch to a constant on his television show. And we hear that it was Salman who goaded him to do so. But when we asked SRK, he smiled mysteriously and said, "No, it's not true that Salman asked me to give it, though I must admit that I was inspired by him and Sunju who are always giving away expensive watches to their friends and fans. I felt very bad for this guy who lost on my show; I just wanted to make him happy. And it felt good doing that." Another 'timely' one up for the big-hearted King Khan. With many thanks to Sallu and Sunju, of course.

This month guys, I've cracked the code. I've finally got to the bottom of the whole 'Hype my Bachua to absurd heights' campaign. And to think that all this while I'd presumed it was a case of desperation/delusion or umm...can i use that s-word - like, you know,, SENILITY?? I was sooo wrong, people, and it's taken someone verrry close to MistahB to sit me down and set the record straight about his over-the-top outpourings. amitabh Bachchan, so I'm told, has had a Change of Mind. And whaddaya know, the reason why he's so suddenly gone from hush to gush is all because of Shah Rukh Khan! He's started to believe that there's something to be said for SRK's 'I'm the best' mantra. He feels that that's what is behind SRK's perpetually shining star. and so he's gone from his customary "we are nothing special, sab uparwale ki dua hai" stance to "it's a proud moment when a father loses to his son...not just Guru but all Abhishek's future performances too are fabulous," propaganda.

Jeez, i mean, is Mistah B for real? but try as I might, i just cannot blame him. I mean, he's a much-revered senior citizen.Who's gonna sit him down and tell him he's missed the whole point? who's gonna explain to him that you and I can giggle away SRK's quotable quotes because he's so obviously doing it with his tongue firmly in cheek and just being wickedly amusing? But that when Bachchan pushes bachua and his 'phenomenal talent' so hard down our throats, it just makes you wanna throw up?
