Let's see what happens to Shahrukh in 35 years: Amitabh

New Delhi: "Let's see what happens to him after 35 years," was actor Amitabh Bachchan's reply to Shahrukh Khan's provocative posers that his time was over and he was old.

"Whatever he says is correct. I am old and he is young and I agree that he is smart and sexy," Mr. Bachchan said. For good effect, he added that he was "sexy Sam," the character he had portrayed in the hit film Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna. But Mr. Bachchan accepted that Mr. Khan was the "reigning king of Bollywood".

Mr. Khan, who recently replaced Mr. Bachchan as host of the TV game show Kaun Banega Crorepati, had said, "I am sexy, smart and young, that was his century, this is mine."

While the two Bollywood actors appear to be engaged in a clash of the titans, Mr. Bachchan told Times Now channel that all the hype about the competition between them was just a creation of the media.

"It makes good copy so you people keep writing about it," he said.

Mr. Khan, said, "I have never imitated anyone. I am quite good at what I do."

Mr. Bachchan recently said he wanted to do more good work so that people could imitate him. - PTI

Big B gets 3 crore Rolls Royce
Expressing gratitude to Amitabh Bachchan for his "stunning" performance in the yet-to-be -released "Eklavya", the film's director Vidhu Vinod Chopra today gifted the actor a Rolls Royce Phantom worth Rs 3.5 crore.

The silver car was presented by Chopra to the Bollywood icon at the latter's Janak office in northwest Mumbai's Juhu suburb.

"Mr Bachchan's performance is simply stunning in 'Eklavya' and I felt such an accomplished performance deserves an extra special acknowledgement and what better than a Rolls Royce for a person who has a passion for cars," Chopra said.

Asked for his reaction, Bachchan said, "I am over the moon. I wanted to work with Vidhu for a long time and this finally happened after a long wait of 30 years."

When Bachchan was asked to compare his turn in "Eklavya" with that in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Black", as both directors had touted his performance in their respective films as the best, he said, "I have realised why Sanjay is a perfectionist, because he worked under Vidhuji for eight years."

Commenting on media reports that he had presented his son Abhishek a Bentley on his birthday on February 5, Bachchan said, "I have not gifted the Bentley to him."

'I didn't gift Abhi that Bentley'
Two days after Bollywood star Abhishek Bachchan received a Bentley worth Rs 1.7 crore on his birthday, his father Amitabh today denied having gifted him the car.

Speaking to reporters while receiving a Rolls Royce Phantom from director Vidhu Vinod Chopra for his performance in "Eklavya", Bachchan said, "I have not gifted the Bentley to him." Asked about media reports on the matter, Bachchan said he did not know how the reports had come about.

He refused to say who had given the car to Abhishek.

On Monday, Abhishek received a white Bentley for his 31st birthday. He went for a drive in the car with his fiance Aishwarya Rai before going to his Juhu residence.

The age of the Superman

Amitabh Bachchan will be doing a special effects film to be produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra

Supercool: Amitabh Bachchan
It's not just shoe size that Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan share. They also share a mutual affinity towards gizmos, gadgets and special effects. For long now Amitabh Bachchan has been looking forward to a film where objects would fly high and Mission Impossible won't seem so impossible after all. The opportunity has come now.

Ram Madhvani who made Let's Talk with Boman Irani is all set to direct Amitabh Bachchan in a FX-driven spectacle.

Mr Bachchan says, "Vinod Chopra is producing the film. In fact we shot a promotional film for Madhvani's film last week. I've never done something like that. It's a film based entirely on special effects. Am I looking forward to it? You bet!"

"Ram made a documentary on me entitled Everlasting Life. That's when I came to know him. He is a very talented person. I've seen rushes of his promos. They're quite remarkable. There's another special effects film Alladin which Rohan Sippy will produce and Sujoy Ghosh will direct.. That will be more targeted at young audiences," adds Mr Bachchan.

I've never done something like that. It's a film based entirely on special effects. Am I looking forward to it? You bet! –– Amitabh Bachchan

Amitabh Bachchan got hooked to 'Eklavya' music
15th Feb 2007 20.30 IST
By Aparajita Ghosh

While shooting for Vidhu Vinod Chopra's movie 'Eklavya' Amitabh Bachchan was so attuned to the film's music that he did not have any other music played on the sets.

Six months before he began shooting Eklavya , Vidhu Vinod Chopra recorded the movie's theme music, background score and three songs. The theme music and background score, composed by Shantanu Moitra, were played on the sets while shooting the film.

Amitabh Bachchan, who plays the royal guard Eklavya in the film, was absolutely enamored by the film's music. So much that he would often hum the tunes in between the shots.

But one day an interesting incident happened on the sets. Music director Shantanu Moitra thought that Mr. Bachchan must have gotten bored of listening to the same tunes everyday, so he changed the music and put on 'The Godfather' theme music instead.

This change of music angered Mr. Bachchan. He furiously asked the name of the person who had changed the music. A nervous Shantanu kept silent and changed the music back to Eklavya's theme tune.

In a press release, Amitabh has expressed his liking for the music and explained the incident that happened.

"I think the music is fantastic, and my body language was attuned to the score, so the sudden change in the composition was disturbing for me as an actor," says the megastar.

Anyway, even though Mr. Bachchan's snub trembled Shantanu, he also took it as a compliment for his composition.

'Eklavya' is a two-hour film with just one song in the foreground and two songs that play in the background. The film's background score has different themes like 'Om Bhurbhuva Swaha' or 'Gayatri Mantra'.

Amitabh Bachchan for President post

Friday, February 16, 2007

If rumours are to be believed, Amitabh Bachchan is likely to contest the presidential election, and if elected will be the 12th President of India! Amitabh's name is doing the rounds among the probable candidates for India's highest constitutional position.

A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the current Indian President would vacate the office in July, and hence there is talk about Amitabh becoming India's future President. It must be remembered here that the superstars brief advent in politics earlier had proved to be a disaster, and he himself had ruled out any involvement in politics.

Amitabh, on his hand is silent, not confirming or denying the talk. Amar Singh, Bachchan's trusted confidante was non-committal: "You can go ahead and say anything... make Amitabh Bachchan a PM or President. Big B is like a kite. Let's see how far he can fly..."

Asked about Amitabh Bachchan's name doing rounds for the President's post, TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu supported this, and questioned what was wrong if he was elected as the President. It remains to be seen if this is true.

Bachchan: Ideal Indian President?

By: Arya Aiyappan
Friday, February 16, 2007

The gunshot is fired and the mad race has begun. With five months to go before the country gets ready to welcome their new President, the grapevine goes that the maestro, Big B has also enrolled himself in the tussle for India's highest post.

A.P.J Abdul Kalam, the present President of India is vacating his office in July and speculations are going round and round as to who would occupy the chair once it falls vacant. With President Kalam's tenure nearing an end, the question regarding the prospective successor arises in every mind. The most esteemed post of the First Citizen has many contenders this time. Veteran CPI (M) leader, current Lok Sabha speaker and member of the Indian Parliament Somnath Chatterjee, Congress candidate Dr Karan Singh, Vice President of India Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, Union Minister for Power Sushil Kumar Shinde and the Big B of Bollywood Amitabh Bachchan are some of the names reverberating in the media circles.

Politics and cinema have always shared a close liaison. They have been very interdependent and mutually inclusive to the extent of sharing a good rapport of exchange. While veteran politicians are vying for the presidential post, the stalwart of Bollywood Amitabh Bachchan is also reported to be planning to participate. That a fair chance should be given to one and all qualified for a post is indeed the ideal, however a post as exalted as that of the President has many responsibilities towards the nation. In fact the President is the representative of the country, the delegate chosen by the nation's elected members.

One cannot repudiate Mr. Bachchan's candidature as a free citizen of the country. The pertinent question of diplomatically handling precarious situations of urgency looms large in the background Hardly can we draw any parallel between A P J Abdul Kalam and Amitabh Bachchan. Bachchan is undisputedly the shining star in Bollywood, but entertainment has its own limitations as against the political scenario. To make the most appropriate decision at the opportune moment is as crucial as not being a mere rubber stamp. As the supreme commander of the armed forces the President is consulted for sensitive issues pertaining to defence and congenial relationships between countries. Mr. Bachchan has been the brand ambassador for many goods but being the ambassador of the country is indeed too heavy a baggage to bear.

Abdul Kalam's erudite experiences have definitely come handy but Mr. Bachcan who has been in the limelight for reasons other than diplomacy has to definitely go for a second opinion before he zeroes down on his decision. Mr. Bachchan backed by the Samajwadi party member Amar Singh and TDP leader Chandrababu Naidu, had endured the bitter experiences of venturing into politics, years before. There is no denying the fact that the Bollywood icon has immense potential and one can never write him off. However we are unable to foresee the future, when Mr. Bachchan could break off all shackles and prove to be one who urges beyond his limitations.

Cinema showcases dreams and slices of reality and to hold the post of a President is no child's play, but vested with responsibilities. Records are meant to be broken and miracles do occur!

Big B to mentor Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp and Amitabh Bachchan, two actors representing the best of Hollywood and Bollywood, sharing screen space... Mira Nair could not have hoped for more for her next film "Shantaram".

While the Hollywood star of films like "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Finding Neverland" will be playing the central role in the film, Amitabh will be the kind-hearted Mumbai gangster.

The New York based Indian filmmaker, who was approached by Depp to direct "Shantaram", couldn't have asked for a better deal.

"It was an honour for me that Depp asked me to make the film. It will go on the floors in November. But right now I busy with the release of my 'Namesake' in India," says Nair told.

When asked about other members of the cast, Nair said it was just Depp and Amitabh right now.

The "Monsoon Wedding" director describes herself as a very intuitive person and one who selects her projects on the basis of her instincts.

And "Shantaram", which will be extensively shot in Australia, China and India, is a story with true global appeal, she said.

"Shantaram" is a screen adaptation of Gregory David Roberts' book of the same name. The film will show how Roberts (played by Depp), a convicted Australian bank robber and heroin addict, escapes from Pentridge Prison, Australia, and flees to India to make his base in Mumbai.

In Mumbai, Roberts has to deal with the Mumbai mafia. He later decides to help slum dwellers and starts a health centre that provides free medical facilities to the poor. It is here that Roberts befriends Kader Bhai (Amitabh) who eventually becomes his mentor and guide.

This is not Nair's first stint with a Hollywood actor.

She had earlier teamed up with Hollywood biggies Denzel Washington in "Mississippi Masala" and Reese Witherspoon in "Vanity Fair".

Asked about her views on Bollywood and the chances of her making a typical potboiler, she said: "I am all for commerciality. I love Bollywood formula but other people make better than me. I make my own kind of cinema, which is very commercial.

" 'Monsoon Wedding' is probably the most successful commercial Hindi film in the world at the moment. In a way it's made more money than all these films."
