Big B declines proposed Presidency

By: Subhash K. Jha, IndiaFM
Saturday, February 17, 2007

It looks like the nation will have to find another high-profile candidate for presidency. Amitabh Bachchan says that he's just not interested .

The news that a political party intends to field the Big B as its candidate for presidency has the mega-star touched but firm in his resolution to stay out of politics. Says the Big B, "I'm deeply humbled and touched by the thought. But I'm not worthy of such a distinguished post of responsibility. Besides no such offer or proposal has come my way yet."

He also adds, "I've constantly maintained politics is not my cup of tea. That's unlikely to change. There're many other ways of making oneself useful to country and society besides politics."

Amitabh Bachchan to host show for ZEE?
Feb 17, 2007 10:35 PM

Amitabh for new ZEE show

According to an online report, ZEE Network is in talks with Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan to host a gameshow for its soon to be launched channel.

MeriNews is reporting that Amitabh could be seen on ZEE Network's new channel - 'ZEE Next', when it launches later in the year.

The broadcaster is pulling out all the stops to upstage rival STAR Plus' 'Kaun Banega Crorepati', which was previously hosted by Bachchan and was taken over by Shah Rukh Khan last month.

Though ZEE is closely guarding its deal with Bachchan, sources said the TV network has got not one but three proposals from the superstar's AB Corps, the new avatar of ABCL. He was bound by STAR TV with a contract not to be part of any game show similar to 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' for any other network but the time period of the contract is over and Bachchan is now free to undertake new assignments.

In an interview, Bachchan, for the first time, acknowledged rivalry between him and Bollywood current heartthrob Shah Rukh Khan. "Yes, there is competition between the two of us....it is healthy to have competition," he said.

It may be recalled that no official reason was given as to why Bachchan quit the popular gameshow. There were rumours of Bachchan having a disagreement with producers of the show but his health was also another reason why he was forced to give up the show. Whatever the reason, it seems like Bachchan is looking at returning to TV...on a rival channel, which gave him his first television break.

Amitabh Should be a playback singer-Vishal Bharadwaj

Monday, February 19, 2007

"Rozana is the most romantic song that I have composed as a music composer. Mr Bachchan kept me out of the recording studio as he said that he won't be able to sing before me. I think he should sing for other actors as well," said composer Vishal Bharadwaj at the music launch of Nishabd recently. Apart from Vishal, Amitabh Bachchan (in Gabbar Singh attire), Jiah Khan and director Ram Gopal Verma were the main attractions. All the happenings of the evening were relayed live on a popular Mumbai radio station.

Vishal went on to shower praise on director Ram Gopal Verma for extracting the "best out of him." RGV was quick to pat-the-back of the talented composer-turned-director by stating, "For a change I have a nagging feeling that I've made a good film so I wanted something good. Complete credit for Rozana goes to Vishal." As Rozana was played on the giant screen, it left an indelible impact. For it is a brilliantly produced track, hauntingly sensual, reeking of restrained magnetism. And undoubtedly Big B is in great form as the singer with a voice blessed with loads of pathos.

Some love stories are never meant to be understood. Well, that's the buzz-line of Nishabd. An 'unusual' love story between a 60 year old (Big B) and a nubile teenager (Jiah). RGV denied any reference to Vladimir Nabokov's novel Lolita that also talks about a love affair between a much older man and a very young girl. In fact Verma preferred to be a miser with words for most part of the press meet as he preferred to answer most of the questions with very brief answers. Or no answer at all: "Nishabd" he would say to any query that he wished to by-pass leading to peals of laughter all around.

Mr Bachchan picked up the cue from his maverick director. On being asked to express his views on rumours about him being a possible Presidential candidate, he replied tongue-in-cheek: "Nishabd". So, how did the film happen? "It took a couple of minutes for Ramu to convince me. He narrated an idea and within five minutes we decided to do it. A week later we were shooting on location at Munnar in Kerala. And in twenty days we were back having finished the film," Big B said.

Jiah Khan was jokingly asked by journalists to speak in Hindi considering she has a heavy British accent. She did try but veered towards English later. No, she hasn't been thinking about the Box Office fate of the film "It's a gift to have worked with Mr Bachchan in my first film. He carries such an aura," she said. Where does her raw sensuality and seductive body language emanate from? The mentor answered matter-of-factly, "That's the way Jiah is. She didn't have to really have a reference point or prepare herself." RGV also added that if Mr Bachchan wouldn't have done the film, he wouldn't have made the film. "Nishabd is Amitabh Bachchan's best performance," he said.

A barrage of difficult questions were showered on Big B about him choosing a subject that may not go down well with the social fabric since a whole lot of people emulated him. "It's a film after all. And once you see the film, you shall realize it doesn't have a negative influence." Has Jaya ji seen the film? "No, she hasn't seen the film. She has seen a few portions. And once she sees the film then only will I know her reaction." A probing lady journalist pointedly asked if men over sixty do things that defy norms? "If a man is over sixty then that doesn't mean he 'loses' everything," Mr B shot back. Does it make you feel young at heart since you are romancing an eighteen year old? "What makes you think otherwise!"

RGV had the last word. On being asked if he has made the correct decision by making Nishabd considering his last few films haven't done well, he said with a hint of a smile, "We will have to wait for March 2nd for the film to release and then realize if it was the right decision or not." Right....

Very secret meeting with Big B

By Subhash K Jha

Deepa Mehta sneaked into Mumbai for just one day for a series of press conferences promoting Water which finally releases in India on 9 March. But she found time to meet up with the Big B at his office Janak to ink a deal.

Yes, Deepa and the Big B are working together!

It looks like Mr Bachchan's earlier stance on the redundancy of an international career is going for a toss. Whether he wants it or not, international filmmakers are ready to take his awesome stardom to the West in a big way.

After Mira Nair who signed him for her Hollywood opus Shantaram, it's Deepa who has roped in the mighty Bachchan for Exclusion. Earlier entitled Kamagata Maru, this true-life tale of a ship that took a group of illegal Indians to the shores of Canada in the early part of the 19th century, will feature the Big B alongside John Abraham.

Says Deepa, "Mr Bachchan and I met in Toronto when he was there to promote Karan Johar's film ( Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna). I was there with Water. He was interested in Exclusion. Now we met again at his office on Friday and he has said yes. I'm too delighted for words. It's been a dream to direct him."

have a soft corner for Vidya: Amitabh Bachchan

Amitabh Bachchan speaks to Subhash K Jha on Eklavya.

Vinod Chopra and you seemed to have established a very special rapport.
He's a kind humanbeing, and very passionate about his work. He has a keen eye for aesthetics. He creates an atmosphere conducive to good work. We waited thirty years to work together. All directors must work towards building a rapport with their actors. Eklavya is an intriguing film.

The visuals may suggest a mythological or a period film. But Eklavya is modern contemporay thriller. It's set in today's Rajasthan.

Eklavya is a very short film….
It's just about two hours long. That's fine. You don't need too much time to spread out a dramatic thriller. Every film has its own rhythm.

You've been giving TV interviews on Eklavya in super-cool sun-glasses?
Oh those were for a particular reason. I had been shooting the whole time for Ram Gopal Varma's Sholay. The role of Gabbar requires me to wear contact lenses. These left me with blood-shot eyes and no choice but to wear sunglasses for the interview that followed the shooting.

Vinod Chopra insists Eklavya is your best performance.
That's his viewpoint. I don't agree with him. True, I've never done anything like this film. I did have a cameo in Shah Rukh Khan's Paheli where I was a similarly dressed. But all told my physical appearance is very different in Eklavya.

You hated the beard, didn't you?
It's such a pain! It was an absolute pain. Once you stick on the beard with gum it just restricts your facial movements and irritates you. And you lose your facial movement. God bless Pran Saab. He's a master with beards.

And he managed to work so wonderfully with them.Vinod and I have agreed that if I'm required to wear a beard in my next film with him everyone else on the crew would've to do the same.

Does that apply to Vidya Balan to?
Provided she's part of the next film

You had to recite lengthy dialogues in sync sound.
That was tough. But when you have to do something, you do it. The false beard made the dialogues difficult. Vinod Chopra suggested I take six months off and grow a real beard. That's the level of commitment. But my other commitments do not allow me the luxury of changing my physical appearance.

But others in Eklavya went out of the way. Sanjay Dutt cut his hair. Jackie Shroff grew a beard. It would've taken me a couple of years to grow the beard that was required to play Eklavya.

Most of the Eklavya cast is new to you.
Except Sanju. He has a unique personality. You could put him in any circumstance, his presence and personality takes care of everything. He's one of the most lovable persons in the film industry.

He's adopted Abhishek as his younger brother. I know Sanju from the time I came to Mumbai to become an actor. Dutt Saab and Nargisji had taken me under their wings, nurtured me…

And Saif?
He has evolved beautifully. Thank God we saw his potential bloom in Dil Chahta Hai. Subsequently he has improved with every project right up to Omkara. It's a great joy being with actors like Saif. The amount of care and dedication that they give to their roles is wonderful.

And Vidya….
I've a special soft corner for her. She's absolutely marvelous and so wonderfully natural. She's so endearing to watch on screen. When I saw her in Parineeta for the first time in Amsterdam I wanted to look only at her and nobody else on screen…with all due respects to the rest of the cast.

Your assessment of Vinod Chopra as a director.
Vinod is very progressive in his thought. He has a very high regard for Indian cinema and wants to take cinema to another level. All his efforts have been directed to taking our movies abroad. All his films have a truly international stamp. His penchant for perfection is truly laudable.

When he'd come to narrate his script he brought his writer, music director and editor along. He encourages inputs from everyone. That's a great quality. We had many discussions on how my character should dress talk and behave. Sometimes he'd call in the middle of the night. He's a man totally involved with his craft.

One day when he was home he found my father's translation of Shakespeare lying on the table. He was surprised that my father had done this. He took the book home, read it and said my character Eklavya should conduct himself through the images described in my father's translations. All creativity is inter-connected in his mind.

Did you adopt your father's Shakespearean imagery in your performance?
Not me. But it was part of Vinod Chopra's writing process in deciding the attitude that Eklavya would adopt. Vinod accidently met Peter O'Toole. The next day he invited Peter O'Toole home and asked me to come and observe his 'Shakespearean' walk.

I couldn't go to Vinod's house…Vinod is continuously creating a creative pool. Only he could connect Shakespeare and Peter O'Toole with my character Eklavya.

How do the mentor Vinod Chopra and his most accomplished protge Sanjay Bhansali compare?
When during Black I saw Sanjay's detailing and passion I didn't know Sanjay had worked with Vinod for eight years. It was only after working with Vinod that everything fell into place. The time spent with Vinod has obviously rubbed off on Sanjay. Today Sanjay has his own subjects and style, Vinod has his own.

Finally the wedding date…
We're still in discussion. As soon we firm in we'll get them married.

Amitabh quashes rumours that he is to run for President

Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan has dismissed claims he's set to join the presidential race in India.

It was rumoured the legendary actor was a potential presidential candidate for the Samajwadi Party, but he's told PTI it's not on his agenda,

"I am deeply humbled and touched by the thought. But I am not worthy of such a distinguished post of responsibility. Besides, no such offer or proposal has come my way yet," he said.

Amitabh isn't the only Bollywood star denying a move into politics this week - Indian heartthrob Shah Rukh Khan has vowed he'll never consider it as a career.

It was thought the award-winning actor might build a political career on the back of his movie stardom but he's now said it will never happen.

"I will never enter politics," the star said in a recent interview.

He joked: "I think appealing people should be movie actors, not politicians."

SRK and I have a secret pact: Big B

Rajeev Masand
CNN-IBN

Mumbai: The talks about rivalry between Bollywood's Badshah Shah Rukh Khan and Big B Amitabh Bachchan have been inevitable ever since it was announced that SRK would take over the 'hot seat' from the ageing icon in Star TV's reality show Kaun Banega Crorepati 3.

So what does Amitabh think of SRK's performance on KBC 3?

CNN-IBN's Entertainment Editor Rajeev Masand caught up with Big B and spoke to him about his much talked about rivalry with King Khan and the new KBC.

Rajeev Masand: Are you surprised by all the attention and interest that seems to exist about your supposed rivalry with Shah Rukh Khan?

Amitabh Bachchan: I'm not surprised. I know this is all a media build and therefore we take it very lightly and play along.

Rajeev Masand: Do you find yourself being provoked very often to answer all these sensational questions just keep the controversy going?

Amitabh Bachchan: Yes I actually said it in one of the programmes that you have no idea how much these TV channels are paying us to keep this war going. Shah Rukh and I have a little secret pact.

Rajeev Masand: The last time I asked you whether you had seen KBC 3, and you said didn't have the time...

Amitabh Bachchan: But now I have.

Rajeev Masand: And what do you think?

Amitabh Bachchan: It's fine. It's a wonderful format actually. And Shah Rukh is doing a fine job. He has made it very light hearted. My brief when I was doing it was that it has to be dramatic, suspenseful and full of character, which is what I did. But he is fine.

Rajeev Masand: They say that the ratings of KBC 3 are nowhere close to that of the time that you did it. A lot of people ofcourse feel that KBC is just not the same without you.

Amitabh Bachchan: Yes?

Rajeev Masand: You don't think so?

Amitabh Bachchan: I think if anyone did KBC it would be successful because of the format is good. It has been running successfully in 80-90 countries across the world. I'm not doing that and neither is Shah Rukh. So what is the reason? The reason is that the game itself is very powerful

More of AB to follow…

------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------
Eagle Eye, Bollywood Trade News Network

Amitabh Bachchan has begun the year with a bang with Vidhu Vinod Chopra's EKLAVYA- THE ROYAL GUARD. Having received rave reviews for his performance from all quarters, he is now looking forward to two other releases that are sure to have the audience sit up and take notice (they do anyways with a Bachchan movie). Up next is Ram Gopal Varma's NISHABDH where he romances an eighteen-year-old. Jiah Khan the newcomer plays his love interest but what I feel will have audience sit up and grin from ear-to-ear will be his performance in CHEENI KUM slated for release soon. A chef, playing his age, he falls in love with a girl half his age (Tabu). With Paresh Rawal, another powerhouse performer in the line-up, expect a paisa vasool trip to the multiplex

View Big B Receives a Rolls Royce - Picture GalleryAlthough Amitabh Bachchan teamed up with some of the best actors in the just-released 'Eklavya', it is Vidya Balan who has impressed him the most.

I told Saif he must slow down: Amitabh Bachchan

By Subhash K Jha

Industry expresses concern about Saif...

Amitabh Bachchan: " I was at an awards function with Aishwarya when I came to know Saif had been hospitalized. We went immediately after the show to see him. He looked fine and cheerful…Investigations were on..I told him he must slow down …It's disturbing to see such a fine lad this way."

Arshad Warsi: "I think actors today are under a lot of pressure to deliver their best. They're constantly trying to perform at an optimum level. On top of work pressures we're constantly under public scrutiny. All of us actors try to balance our professional and personal lives to the best of our abilities.

Stress is bound to be there. So Saif, please take extra care of yourself…Relax, chill. You're precious to all of us. Hang in there. Lots of love.

Hema Malini: "I'd like to tell Saif to take it easy. I know that isn't easy. Even if you feel the need to slow down no one out here lets you. But Saif has to get selfish about his well-being. My humble advice to him is, grab time for yourself, find some peace and quiet. You've earned it."

Dino Morea: "It's really sad to hear Saif's unwell. I hope he gets well soon. The work load gets to all of us, no matter how much care we take of our health. It's easy for me to say Saif should slow down. But he's in his prime. And he needs to use this time to move ahead. This phase won't come back again."

Urmila Matondkar: "The high feeling of doing good work is so exhilarating that unknowingly one tends to over-work. I'd like to remind Saif that he's going through one of the best phases in his career. He needs to take it to greater heights. And for that he needs to be in good health. He should take the warning and look after himself."
