From his reported spat with Salman Khan to hosting his first telly show, Neha Maheshwri puts actor Sanjay Dutt on the grill

It may have been the first time, but Sanjay Dutt is keen to master the tricks of the trade (hosting) as soon as possible. Here, Dutt speaks about his friends, his TV debut and why he is against his daughter Trishala's wish to make a career in Bollywood. Excerpts...

You may have received TV offers earlier too, then why Colors' Bigg Boss? The show enjoys great loyalty among viewers. And Salman is another important reason behind me doing this show; he really encouraged me to take it up. He always wanted me to enter television right since he started hosting Dus Ka Dum but he wanted me to debut with the best show and this looked like it was the one.

Would you personally enjoy watching a show where the cameras are on someone's personal life? Yes, I like watching it. 55 cameras constantly watching you is what the media does always anyway.

Hosting TV shows requires a certain personality and you are known to be reserved and shy, how do you think you would cope up? What makes you feel I am shy? I like to keep away from the media glare. If I just keep blabbering in front of the press, they tend to turn and twist it around as per their convenience to present it in the most spiciest avatar. So, it's wise to say the right thing at the right time.

What are the kind of reactions have you got from within the industry, your wife and sisters? The feedback has been fantastic, positive and overwhelming. They can't wait to see Salman and me host the show together. My wife and sisters are happy for me and think that this is the best show to host on TV.

Are you nervous? I was a little in the beginning but I am feeling better after the dry run. Salman's going to be there with me and I am looking forward to have a lot of fun.

Personally, which genre of shows do you feel you will be able to do justice to? I would like to be on a show like this one that spells fun and masti. Given a choice, I would like to be a part of the show which has got to do with helping someone. It should enable me to bond emotionally with the participants. With what I have gathered, Salman on BB is a lot of fun, while Amitji is more of a serious a host. I would like to watch something that has a lot of spunk in it.

We always blame the media for stirring controversies but isn't there some truth to what is said... To cite an example, Salman came to my house and we had no fight. So what made the media write about something that was a far cry from reality. I can show you photographs, where we are holding hands and smoking together, which is proof enough to show that the news is incorrect. The press wasn't even inside my house during the party, so how can the press report such false news. And who told them? My servant or my cook? And the next day, I shot with Salman for this show. As far as the news about the reported fall out after I refused to play his father in an upcoming movie goes, I would like to tell you that he told me to essay the character only if I am comfortable and I declined. Also, he is very close to me and the friendship goes a long way from our fathers' time. I feel he is my younger brother though we may not be related by blood. And even if we do fight, what is anybody's problem? Don't brothers fight?

There are no permanent friends or enemies in Bollywood. And we hear that Ranbir Kapoor is your new BFF and you gifted him a bike. Comment. Once I take somebody as my friend, I am there for him for life. We don't choose family but choose friends. Ranbir's not my new friend but someone I've seen grow up. Raj Kapoorji's family and mine go a long way.

Considering that so many star daughters are entering Bollywood, why are you hell bent against your daughter pursuing a career in the film industry? The Dutt family girls do not enter this profession.

Are you going to Delhi to visit an ailing Amar Singh anytime soon? I've not planned it as yet. Amar Singhji's a brother to me. I stand by him as his younger brother as he stood by me in times of need.
