Chapter One

The Attack on Soil

Scene 1

Pratap is roaming aimlessly in the practice field. His heart was racing.

'ye kya soch rahe ho thum pratap' He cursed under his breath. Did he not promise himself that he will never think about any girl. Did his experience not teach him how foolish it was to ever trust? Did Ajabde's betrayal not open his eyes towards how ruthless the real world was?

'But she is different' his heart argued.

Soon he started practicing his sword fight techniques. This is what made him real. This is what he is.. a 'Warrior' 'A deshbhakt'

WIth every swoosh of the sword he remembered Patta's Jija's face.

'I don't even know her name' he thought

aap yahan hai? came a voice.

Pratap gave a violent jerk to his sword which pierced the earth. It was Patta.

Pratap smiled and greeted his young enthusiastic friend. Soon they were discussing the methods of how to prepare their army for the upcoming battle. Patta informed that his Jija had informed him about an upcoming fair where many known vendors of arms will be coming to Bijolia. Baijilal had invited many of the known sellers and makers of different arms to Bijolia so that they could purchase the needed materials for warfare.

Even though the name 'Baijilal' had made Paratap's heart constrict a bit, but the thought of the fair uplifted his mind. The prospect of buying arms made him feel, (for the first time since the day's events) calm.

Scene 2

It was like the fair he had once seen before. People for the first time since he had entered bijolia , seemed happier.
Though many of them did give up their money for the sake of their motherland, many were just enjoying the rides and other attractions that were set up. The children were running around and there was a happy atmosphere. The Afghan Threat seemed somehow remote and unimportant.

Baujiraj' came chakrapani's voice.

Pratap turned to see his friend running towards him.

Han bolo chakrapani' he said smiling and looking around.

Saubhagya wati nay kaha hai ki Ajabde baisa bhi aaj mele main aayengi'

Hearing this Pratap's face reddened. Now she wants to come? He thought angrily. When she was hiding comfortably during the attack and sending out ...

his thoughts drifted towards Ajabde's face. Of course he did not know that the woman he was so attracted to was none other than his Ajabde.

Shayad voh bhi ayengi aaj.

Right then he saw saubhagyawati walking alongside with Ajabde. Though for him she was Patta's Jija. He wanted to run towards her and make her understand that he did not mean to put his hand on her forehead. It was a mere accident!

Ye kya soch rahe ho pratap? kya ye sunker voh chakit nahi ho jayengi ki thum safai kiyun de rahe ho'?

He then remembered how she had looked at him accusingly. He had to clear this matter to her.

"baujiraj...baujiraaj kahan ja rahe hain aap? cried chakra pani as he ran behind his friend.

Ajabde was buying green bangles when pratap's hand crossed her hand's path towards a red and yellow pair.

Ajabde immediately retreated her hand. She looked at him questioningly and without saying a word turned away from him.

Ye humaray peechay kiyun aa rahe hain? she thought t o herself as she fastened her pace and ran towards another vendor who was selling knifes.

Unknown to both, saubhagyawati had stayed back few steps to meet with her husband.

Ajabde baisa aaj bohot pareshan thi. She informed her husband about the ill health of Ajabde and her passing out.

mujhe lagtha hai ki voh bohut badi duvidha main hain lekin mujhe kuch bata nahi pa rahe hain' she continued.

Chakrapani informed her about how Pratap is thinking of announcing her as Rajdrohi.

At this Saubhagyawati became shocked. Anger flashed on her face and as she was about to respond, she heard Ajabde call her.

Ji baisa,' she said running towards her.

After a few minutes of looking around, Ajabde finally picked up a very sharp dragger. She turned had in her hand a long stem of sugar cane. She quickly made a sharp move to see how fast the blade would cut the strong stem and her face lit up when the cane split in half.

Bohot achay' came a voice.

Her heart skipped as she unwillingly turned around, knowing that the sound was of Pratap.

Humay aapki pasand sey prabhavit hain'

Ajabde put the dragger in her chunri and paid the sword maker. She was about to leave when Pratap quickly put his hand in front of her

Rukiye humay aapsey bohot awashayak baat kerni hai' He said with a hint of urgency in his voice.

Sena kay baray main? asked ajabde not quite looking at him.

Pratap nodded in a no

tho hum is samay vyast hai' she said and made a run for it. She wanted to avoid him as much as she could. His intense gaze made her heart skip and this was something she could not bear.

Rukiye tho' called Pratap

Ajeeb hain ye. humsey nazrain kiyun nahi mila rahi hain ve? kya humnay kuch anuchit keh diya ? he thought to himself

Ye zaroor us maang wali baat hi hogi, abh tho humay inhay sach batana hi hoga. He thought to himself determined.

Few hours had passed by. Pratap had managed to buy the best arms needed for his men. Patta praised his choices as he dragged his Jija to show her their arms.

ye dekhiye jija! Pratap nay kithnay achay aur uttham asthron ko chuna hai' He said proudly.

Ajabde looked at the arms loving and with immense pride her in eyes she proclaimed

abh humari matr bhumi ko humsey koi nahi chen saktha'

hum aapkay bohot abhari hain ashvpalak'...nahi senapati ji' She said.

Pratap became elated at her remark and nodded towards her.

Lekin humey aapsey kuch kehna hai. He said remembering her last encounter.

ji kahiye' said Ajabde thinking that he might bring up something important about the army

Nahi yahan nahi. Mujhe aapsey ekanth main milna hai'

Ajabde looked at him surprised, but agreed.

Pratap then walked towards a horse stable while ajabde followed him. He took some hay out and started feeding the horse and without looking at Ajabde he said

Humnay anuman hai ki aap humsey santhusht nahi hain. Shayad meri kisi harkat ki vajay sey aap , naraaz hain?

Ajabde and Pratap both remembered the rain scene.

Mera haath aapkay maang per...

bas ashvpalak. came Ajabde's voice. He noticed anger and pain in her voice. Pratap turned around and looked at Ajabde's face. He saw pure anger on her face. She was shaking.

aap mujhe galat...'he started

aap apni mariyada main rahiye' said Ajabde loudly.

Pratap was now getting angry at her remark. He had not done anything that would put a woman's honor in harms way. But, he had never been so close to any woman before her. His heart argued back.

Pratap remembered the rain sequence again and that calmed him down. Perhaps she was right. He perhaps did cross a line there. He thought to himself

Ajabde turned around when Pratap suddenly went in front of her determined to clear the misunderstanding.

Ajabde quickly took her ghoonghat with her one hand and put her hand forward.

Hum aapki bohot izzat kerthay hain, kiyunki hum aapko ek sacha deshbhakt manthay hain. Lekin agar aap apni mariyada main nahi rahengay tho humay majbooran aapsey ...she then looked at pratap who looked confused to her.

aap humari baat suniye. Maine janbuch ker nahi...' he continued.

Bas... shouted Ajabde. She did not want to hear any of his explanations. She knew how he made her feel and the forbidding nature of his closeness.

Main vivahit hun' she blurted out.

Pratap looked as if someone had punched his face. This was the last he had expected from her. It took him a full minute to recover from her statement.

Ajabde gave him a pleading yet accusing look and ran towards her brother who was standing afar watching their conversation intently.

Chapter One
Scene 3 and 4

Scene 3.

Ajabde was crying in her room. Why did she say to him that she was married. There was no need for her to give any explanations to a stranger. She felt so ashamed of herself that she did not want to even face herself in the mirror.
Chittor ki bahu, Kuwar pratap patni, aur aisi harkat. sharm aani chahiye thumhai Ajabde. She said to herself.

her eyes were bloodshot red and had puffed up due to constant crying.

Why did it bother him that she was married? Thought Pratap as he laid down staring at the stars above. It was shameful that he was thinking of a married woman?! Why did her thoughts make his heart heavier?

Pratap tried closing his eyes and Ajabde's face came squirming around his eyes. Her innocent eyes, and how close he was when he removed the dust from her eyes, ...her face...her...

Pratap sat up straight.

Anger flashed through his face. What was he thinking? He punched the earth around him and kicked the stone in front of him.

Perhaps she was right. He did cross the line or else why would he still think about her and why would she have to tell him that she is married.?!

Married? Why was she married? Argued his heart

Pratap, Kuwar Pratap. Kya aapka ye astitv reh gaya hai ki aap ek parayi stri kay baray main aise vichar rakhthay hain. Lajja nahi aathi aapko, he shouted aloud. Kya ye sanskar diye hai aapki ranima nay aapko?

his ranima...where was she when he needed her the most and then anger came flooding back at his face.

Ajabde , is sabh ki mulya karan ajabde hain! he said angrily.

Though somewhere he knew that his feelings for Pata'a jija were no fault of Ajabde. And he is married too just like her, but where is her husband?

Why is he not fighting along side of her? Pratap remembered the many times when she was in harms way and wondered why her husband was not there besides her protecting her?

A monster was raising in his heart. What kind of a coward should he be to leave a wife like her and not defending her.

With unreasonable hatred towards this unknown person, he finally closed his eyes and fell asleep.

kahan hain aap Kuwar Pratap? humay yun akela chorker aap kiyun chale gaye?

humay apnay aap sey dar lag raha hai? Agar hum apni mariyada nahi rakh sakay tho hum johar ker lengay. She thought to herself

Then the eyes of many men and women of Bijolia came in front of her. Their helpless faces, hopeful faces, how can she think like that?

She is not a coward. With regained determination, she wiped her tears.

Nahi abh bas. Hum apni is kamzori ko apni praja per havi nahi honay dengay.

Nahi, abh bas.

She closed her eyes and laid back on her bed.

Scene 4.

Pratap had called an important meeting with the army men. They started discussing the tactics. Pratap explained his strategy of surprise attacking the Afghan soilders.

Lekin hum Rajput hain' he said with pride in his voice . hum yun peet peechay var nahi karengay'

humaray paas hathyar kam hai, aur yodha bhi. Aur agar hum khuli chetavani dengay tho voh bewakoofi hogi aur Rajpoot Bevakoof bhi nahi hothay' Replied Pratap smilingly.

Though Patta looked rebellious, he did not argue further.

Kya ? said Ajabde when Patta informed her of Pratap's tactics.

She fell silent and decided to bring this up with him at a later time to better understand why he preferred this.

It was evening; Pratap was overseeing the soldiers sharpening their swords.

Ghani kamma

Pratap immediately turned around and found Ajabde standing in front of him. His heart elated at the very sight of her.

Ajabde was looking straight at him. This made him feel much calmer.

She did not hide from him anymore. Did she forgive him?' he thought

Patta nay aapkay sujav kay baray main bataya. Kya ye satya hain?

Pratap nodded.

kya aap humain bata sakthay hain ki , is tarah yudh karna kya Rajput yudhneeti kay virudh nahi hai?

Pratap nodded in a no.

Humara pratam kartavya hai, bijoliya ko Afghan kay chungal sey chudwana. Aur issay prapt kernay ke liye, humay apni sanya Shakti ka sahi upyog kerna chahiye. Aur humaray paas ithnay sainik nahi hai ki yudh bhumi main inka samna karay. Lekin ithnay sainik avashya hain jo inkay khaaimay ko tabah ker day. Humnay in per us vaqt var kerna hai jab ye puri tarah sey apna rakshan nahi ker paye.

kya aap apnay vichar ko sun rahe hain? argued Ajabde.

Aisa karna Rajput dharm kay vipreet hain she argued.

aapnay humnay saina pati chuna hai argued Pratap

humnay nahi, baijilal nay. Aur voh kabhi nahi chahengi ki koi bhi karya Rajput dharm kay vipreet ho. Argued Ajabde

Acha! said Pratap with anger flushing back to his face

Kahan hai ve? jab unkay logon ko unki sabsey zyada zaroorat hai, tab ve araam say apnay rajmahal main chup ker baiti hain aur humay yudh neethi sikha rahi hai'

Just then Patta raised his sword.

Ajabde asked him to put his sword back

maine aapko pehlay bhi kaha tha ki unhonay mujhe bejha hai aur main kafi hun'

Pratap looked at her intensely and thought

Han aap kafi hai. Then immediately regretted thinking that and looked away from her.

Lekin , jiyunki aap sena pathi hai , hum aapkay virudh nahi jayengay aur Baijilal nay aapko niyukth kiya hai hum unki baat ka samman rakhengay aur aapki yojna kay anusar hi yudh karengay proclaimed AJabde.

Pratap turned around and looked her admiringly. Perhaps it was his intense glaze that made her turn around and leave so immediately.

It was night. Pratap was walking alone in the jungle trying to get close towards the enemy camp. The sounds of the night animals kept him alert. Anything out of the ordinary he was ready for and just then he heard a small crack.

Without glancing he turned around with his sword and saw Ajabde walking slowly dressed in her warrior clothing.

Aap yahan aur is waqt?

Ji , hum baijilal kay kahnay per yahan aaye hain'

once again amazed by the cowardice of Ajabde , Pratap's anger took the better part of his face.

Aap Baijilal kay naam sey ithna krodhith kiyun ho jathay hain' asked Ajabde curiously.

"Mujhey unkay baray main kuch baat nahi kerna' said PRatap

De-ja-vu all over again. He once again compared this wonderful woman to his once love-Ajabde. How different in nature they are...or are they really. Is it not because of her simplicity and her deshbhakti, that he had initially fallen in love with Ajabde?

And is it not because of those very reasons that he is finding Patta's jija attractive. He thought to himself. He shook his head immediately as if that would get throw the thoughts out of his mind and walked steadily into the forest followed by Ajabde.

Soon they were near the base camp of Aghan army.

Pratap silently started to mark all the points of their camp and starting placing his men in his mind near those marks. Ajabde was looking intently at him. She saw that pure ferocity on his face. The want of getting victory at any cost. Then she remembered how her pratap was very much similar.

With a painful shov, she threw that thought out of her mind. It was this normal pratap who was standing besides her now, not her kuwar Pratap. And no matter how much she wanted for him to be besides her, that would not happen. He had abandoned her people, just like he abandoned her. With a tear tickling on her cheek she looked on.

Pratap then turned around and noticed a tear rolling down. He had an urgent rush to wipe it away but with great difficulty he controlled his hands.

Abhi chaliye' he said.

Ajabde followed him back into the forest. They were walking in silence for full 30 minutes when Pratap asked

kya hum aapsey ek vyaktigat prashn puch sakthay hain? breaking the silence.

AJabde did not know what to answer and she continued to remain silent.

Pratap looked at her sideways and took her silence for approval

aapkay pati nahi hain yahan bijolia main? He did not want to ask this question but he could not avoid not asking as well.

Ajabde looked at him shockingly. She did not know what to reply. Her mind starting racing

Agar aap nahi batana chahthi hain tho teekh hain. Lekin mujhe bohot hairani hui ki , woh aapkay saath is mujhkil ki ghadi main saath kiyun nahi hai? There was a hint of disgust in his voice and perhaps Ajabde recognized it when she spoke

Ve chittor mai hain'

Chittor? asked Pratap surprised

Tho phir...'

Unko shayad mera sandesha nahi mila hoga. Jaise Ranaji ko nahi mila bijoliya kay baray main'

Pratap went into deep thoughts. What was happening? Why was all the communication being cut?

Apkay pati tho yahan aa sakthay thain na? he asked with an accusing tone.

aap unkay baray main aise vachan math kahiye. ve vyasth hongay ya ..humay nahi pata. Lekin zaroor koi aavyashak baat hogi , jiski vajay sey ve aa nahi pa rahe hain' she said defensively.

Pratap laughed.

aap auraton ko hum kabhi samaj nahi payengay' Yahan desh ke liye apni jaan luta nay ke liye tayiyar hain lekin jab apnay pati ki galthiyon ki baat aayi tho unko humesha dhanknay ki baat karengi' laughed Pratap.

Bas kijiye. Humnay aapsey nahi pucha ki aap humaray pati kay baray main kya vichar rakhthay hain. Lekin ainda humaray saamnay unka tiraskar nahi kijiyega' retorted Ajabde angrily.

Pratap continued to smile but there was a twinge in his heart. Did Ajabde defend him as well? Of course not. She would never think of him this way. Look at this girl how she defends her motherland and her husband. Where as his wife-Ajabde , who not only does desh droh but also never speaks highly of him.

All of a sudden, Pratap took hold of Ajabde with her waist and pulled her closer. Ajabde struggled to get out of his grip. When Pratap closed her mouth from taking out any sound.

He could see the shock in her eyes and her struggle to get free. He knew that her hands were trying to reach the dagger tied to her waist.

Then Ajabde noticed. An afghan soilder was walking past by.

Ajabde's body calmed and she stopped struggling realizing why pratap had done that. Pratap slowly took his hands off her mouth but held on to her waist tightly. His back touched the trunk of the tree while his eyes followed the Afghan soilder who had just halted.

Perhaps he had heard the noise of the struggle that Ajabde was making moments before.

Ajabde and Pratap , held on to their breath , waiting for the soilder to discover them but , then they saw him turn away from the tree where they were hiding and go towards the direction of their camp.

Pratap let a sigh of relief. Then he noticed how his hands were entangled with Ajabde's hands, and how they calmly rested on her thin waist so comfortably. His body just started to feel her softness when he felt a strong push.

Ajabde had released herself forcefully and was looking daggers at him. How dare he she thought to herself.

But she could not deny the warm feeling of the strong arms that were holding her tight. Before she could savor it a great feeling of regret shot though her heart. The guilt of having a man touch her , came back lashing at her.

Without any word, she once again took a run for it making Pratap stand there looking confused and to some extent guilty.
