Hey forum members,
The episode broadcast on 9th of May 2017, kinda showed depression as pagalpan.
Which is very, very, very wrong.
Depression is not pagalpan. It is never pagalpan.
It'll lead people to believe a depressed person may act like Maya. Which is incorrect. What Maya suffers from is an entire different thing. It maybe a case of misdiagnosis but still, the portrayal of depression that way is unjustified on so many levels.

Sadness is a natural part of the human experience. People may feel sad or depressed when a loved one passes away or when they're going through a life challenge, such as a divorce or serious illness. However, these feelings are normally short-lived. When someone experiences persistent and intense feelings of sadness for extended periods of time, then they may have major depressive disorder (MDD).

MDD, also referred to as clinical depression, is a significant medical condition that can affect many areas of your life. It impacts mood and behavior as well as various physical functions, such as appetite and sleep. People with MDD often lose interest in activities they once enjoyed and have trouble performing everyday activities. Occasionally, they may also feel as if life isn't worth living and are prone to committing suicides. WHO's new global health estimates on depression said while over 5 crore Indians suffered from depression, over 3 crore others suffered from anxiety disorders.

Some people with MDD never seek treatment. However, most people with the disorder can get better with treatment. Medications, psychotherapy, and other methods can effectively treat people with MDD and help them manage their symptoms.

So showcasing it such a negative light, by indicating people with depression may behave like Maya does, on such a major platform, might trigger some people due to social stigma to never even try to get better by seeking treatment and taking medication.

An effort must be made to let the makers know, else who knows, they might not even be aware that W*F are they doing.

This is my earnest request to please let the makers know that what they are portraying is wrong. On so many levels. It can and will have a HUGE impact on the viewers.

I strongly agree, I believe it was highly incorrect of the makers/writers/team to portray depression as such. Back in the episode of 27th January, Jhanvi had thrown some light on the issue. I loved how in that episode Jhanvi felt the need to emphasise the problem of judgementality in the world. She was absolutely right when she said that any person having mental issues is considered crazy in this world. It would have been more accurate if she blamed our society instead of the world, as in many places these stereotypes do not exist anymore and people are broad-minded and supportive of people with mental issues. However in India, anyone who has ever visited a psychologist, for whatever reasons is considered crazy and secluded. The crowd fails to realise that isolating people with minimal mental problems just makes the situation worse.

It's sad that the makers of the show are misusing this platform which can really make a difference. I do not expect them to 'send a positive message' or anything of the sort but I do hope to see fairly correct diagnosis as they are just making people believe that an individual suffering from depression turns out to be like Maya when in reality, that isn't the fact. Maya has much more to her personality than mere depression but from today's episode, many viewers may conclude otherwise.

Exactly!
Yk, some of the psychologists too, tell the patient to not disclose that they are seeing them. To not reveal what they're going through. Why? Mental illnesses are still a taboo. People look at it that way, and unfortunately, I don't see it changing anytime soon.

Many a times, not talking about it clogs up the emotions and chokes the person from the inside. And what the makers are showing, is encouraging that. To never ponder upon the possibility that what they are feeling isn't normal and it's a thing which can be worked upon so that it gets better.

It will stop many people to even think about getting treatment. they all will suffer in silence and slowly the illness will consume them, gnaw on them from the inside. another life lost, which easily could have been saved. Why, because of callousness on our part as a part of this damned society.

It's disheartening, to see such ignorance on a huge platform like this. I really wish there is some way to contact and let them know...

I doubt there's any ways to contact the makers and further, I doubt they would pay heed to such a thing. Mental illnesses certainly remain a hush-hush topic, people don't think twice before labelling someone who is already undergoing hardships something cruel and mock them.

I believe it's best to share one's feelings with someone, anyone. As you say, suffering in silence can have horrifying effects on people. It's truly not that hard to help someone, a slight change in characters' perspective in the show and people would feel so much better about themselves.

But the thing is, people seem to love their ignorance more.
and those who actually care, remain clueless, until it too late...

What everyone doesn't realise is that the stigma is an illness in itself.

Won't an ignorant society just drown us all in problems? It's ironic how people can no longer rely upon anything if they wish to maintain their well-being.

If you're on twitter, please tweet it to @shilpafdmello and @sontv.
The show has positively put me off with its pedestrian writing and misusing sensitive issues like rape and depression is the last nail in the coffin.🤢

I don't want to offend anyone, but here it is clear that nobody has really understood what is wrong with maya. Everybody is labelling what she has as depression, and thinking that the cv's are trying to reinforce the stereotype that people with depression are dangerous, when it is already obvious that the mental ailment maya has is not depression. Depression is also a symptom of many different mental illness besides being a mental illness in its own right.

I thought people would have realised by now that she doesn't have depression. People with depression do not exude the extreme amount of paranoia that maya does, neither do they display a lack of empathy and guilt like maya. There are many other things that have been shown about maya that clearly indicative that what she has is not merely depression, but goes much beyond that. Depression is only one symptom of the condition that maya has, and we all need to understand that before we jump to cut the writer's throats.

I think it's easy for us all to say that she just has depression and blame it on cv's for trying to make a character with depression look extremely evil, when it is the fault of audience members like on this topic who are mistaking everything that maya is doing as depression.

We need to look at the symptoms, and her behaviour in general to understand what her mental illness is, but she displays a lot of symptoms of sociopathy. Sociopathy is actually a personality disorder, not to be mixed up with psychopathy, because sociopathy is caused by external, social or environmental factors, whereas psychopathy is widely believed to be due to biological and genetic influences. The one thing both conditions have in common is that they are both commonly characterised by anti-social behaviour, and the symptoms that maya has always displayed are of sociopathy, marked by her traumatic early years.

If you think about it, till date, sociopathy has never really been explored properly and correctly, because a sociopath is not your typical evil indian serial villian who does horrendous acts just out of greed and lust, but because exposure to a dysfunctional environment in early years is what makes an actual sociopath the way they are, and we haven't really seen that in any indian serial character before.

To be honest even though villians in general on indian serials are always unjustified in their action, the only thing that stops maya from being an unnecessarily evil character without reason is her childhood experiences. Most villians on tv just do gruesome things for no reason, whereas maya to a certain extent can't help herself from doing what she does anymore, because really she needs medical help.

Actually psychopathy is also exacerbated due to child abuse endured by victims (turned perpetrators) in their early, growing up years. Many in the forum have already discussed what Maya maybe suffering from in the past week. But that's not the point. Here Jhanvi clearly leads Vandy to a file containing Maya taking prescription pills allegedly for her depression (as shown in the FB scene although Maya had used it to con Saanjh back then) Vandy's dialogue of neatly demarcating buri from bimari, as if they're both mutually exclusive is what makes it stupid! It's what the CVs are peddling through Vandy that Maya in fact is a 'pagal' due to her popping anti-depressant pills. It's shameful tbh.
