I am posting a comment I made on another thread as a separate post, as a member suggested I do so. Here it is.

Maya is both a hero and a villain. Basically, she is the lead protagonist! Beyhadh is HER story. A Vamp is just a woman with some ax to grind with either the hero or his family or heroine etc. Maya IS the story. So there is no issue of her being a Vamp.

I think people have got so used to seeing Mahaan devi's and doormats with no self-respect as heroines or leads, that they think a female who stands up for herself, who breaks relationships because she is not happy with them, who is not perfect and capable of manipulation is actually a "Vamp". This is only possible on Indian TV! People have been so conditioned to seeing Gopi Bahu or Sasural Makki types that they can't even imagine someone like Maya being a heroine!

Fact remains, Maya is not "good". But neither is she totally "bad". She had good qualities. But most have been submerged in her insecurities and obsessions. She is so afraid of losing Arjun that she has imprisoned him. Similar to what she did to Jhanvi. What is inconvenient about Beyhadh is that it doesn't have just white and black characters. No one is perfect and no one is a Mahaan godlike character. Even Saanjh has acted in the wrong way many times. No amount of whitewashing will change that. Maya is wrong too. So is Arjun, Vandana, Ayaan, Jhanvi. In fact everyone. They all act like humans! They are not caricatures but based on real people! Real people are always grey. To what extent and what shade is determined by their circumstances and their character! That is it!

I don't get all these comments of Maya sexually assaulting Arjun! I have not seen any such thing. She has touched Arjun, sometimes when he is asleep sometimes when he is awake. But she has never tried to have Sex with him when he was unconscious! That "sedation" in the ambulance was to stop him leaving, NOT to sexually assault him. I don't get what part of that was a sexual assault. Yes, it was an "assault" coz she sedated him. But after that, she just slept on his chest. I didn't see any sexual violation? Don't get that part at all. Even the part where Maya tried to seduce Arjun and there were all these comments about Rape? What rape? She didn't force him. So how can it be assault? If your wife/husband, makes advances towards you, that is them trying to get close or seduce. If you don't want to engage in it and say no but they force themselves on you, THAT is assault. I didn't actually see any such extreme take place?

Ayaan's actions? I was shocked by them. But I will reserve judgment till the episodes because I still can't believe what I saw! Will he really tear Maya's clothes and push her around? I hope not. I am saying it more for Ayaan's sake! I understand his anger and in his shoes, I would be angry too. But this is only going to ruin him. So I hope he doesn't do any such thing. He has NO idea who he is engaging with. All this time Maya liked him. But after this incident, he will be in the bad books too! She will surely not spare him at all. Samay? He seems like an obsessed guy just like Maya. I am waiting to see more of him to figure him out!

Part 2 of Post:

If she is anything like Amy in Gone Girl, then watch out. What I am waiting to see are her master plans and the games she will play. Yes Arjun was insensitive and didn't understand her. He admitted himself to Ayaan that he is paying for the fact that he loved her and married her, and yes he knew Maya's love was Beyhadh. But to this extent? He had NO idea.

A lot of people say when they start having problems with an over-possessive spouse or partner. "It was not like this at the start", or "He/she was not like this before marriage" etc. Sometimes people keep some of their extremes hidden in the wooing stage or the courtship stage. Sometimes they show some of their extremes once the relationship is more established or you are married.

Therefore, Arjun not being able to fathom the level of Maya's issues or the depth of the pit he was falling into, I can understand. But, there are always signs. You just have to pick up on them. But more often than not, the "Full Picture" is not available to you till much later. Once you have already signed on the dotted line. Arjun is essentially trapped. Maya has made it look like HE is the problem so that he can never leave. If he tries to leave, she does something extreme and if something were to happen to her, Arjun will always come under suspicion. One can't help but feel some empathy or sympathy for Arjun's situation.

The guy's biggest fault was underestimating the situation he was getting into. Yes, he wanted the high life. Yes, he is paying the price for it. But fact remains, I think even for a short time, he did have some real feelings for her. He cared about her. Probably deep inside some humanity is still left towards her. But her control has wrung all the love and passion out of him. He loved Maya the "liberator". The Maya who gave him the chance to become "The" Arjun Sharma he became after meeting her. But he cannot love his jailor, Maya. You can't love someone who imprisons you. Love thrives on freedom. Love by it's nature is a force that cannot ever be held or controlled. The irony is, if only Maya had set him free, let him breathe, he would have freely given her the love she craves. But by trying to keep him locked in her golden cage, she has achieved the opposite. Because control will always be faced by rebellion. Not acquiescence. The difference between the Maya now and the Maya then was that she gave Arjun the "Illusion" of freedom before. Now she doesn't even do that. Her manipulations and games are totally obvious now. I am waiting for her to be cunning again. That version is a lot more interesting to watch.

i agree with you
i think Maya is a hero and villain.
let's not forget she saved her mothers life, she put some sense into Arjun to love his mum and she always prayed for her mum to ganesh ji for instant the time her mum was in hospital. i feel there is a light in Maya but it is hidden due to her unhealthy and extreme behavior.

i genuinely feel after ArYa's marriage, Maya wanted to change and she did mention she is now 'maya sharma' and not 'maya malhotra'. this made me feel as if she wanted to start fresh and forget her past but... Vandana made it difficult for her, vandana was never ready to accept maya and that's when i felt mayas grey side entered and she became stubborn like vandana and separated Arjun from his mum.

about the Ayaan issue in the precap, i did not comment as i would rather wait until the episode because in phase 2 we have seen the extreme side of Maya so it could either be her plan or Ayaan did try rip her clothes and if he did then that's shocking

Exactly!
People fail to realize that maya is grey
In fact every character is grey in this show!
Maya can never be completely good nor completely bad...
Sometimes she is as pure as as an angel
But other times she is as dark as the devil when it comes to protecting her love...
Mix the two and u get a neutral grey character... Which ic very much similar to real humans...
Even i cant consider my self completely white or black, i would consider my self like maya...
Im not pure, considering that i have lied in the past, and maybe yes i have also manipulated people... But that doesnt make me a vilaain, that makes us humans... So lets not try to be gods!

I call maya a human! A person that can make mistakes... But will she ever redeem herself is the question... Can she ever redeem herself or is it too late? Lets wait and find out! :)

That was nice.. very balanced and well worded😊 I agree with almost everything you said except that I have lesser empathy for Arjun. We still don't have a clear picture of when and how things started falling apart between the two. At what point in their relationship did Maya start tightening the noose. Going by the glimpse of what of we saw during first few initial days of marriage, I feel there is more to the story than what we heard from Arjun so far. Maya was always , I wouldn't say crazy but she's not normal either.. Arjun's love had started changing her for the better...Miraculously she recovered from insomnia, her overall personality that was so cold and icy in the beginning changed for the better.. fairytale stuff..! When things started changing few days before the holi incident, secret meetings, lying, drinking alcohol, Vandana's drama, Maya again started reverting back to her old insecure, manipulative self.. The day Arjun sneaked out leaving her waiting for dinner, to meet Saanjh in a restaurant, that was the day I thought she started losing her trust on him.. Things just started getting worse from there on.. Maya maybe bad, sadist, ruthless, grey, manipulative etc etc etc but there was hope, had she got Arjun's unflinching love and support, during the darkest of times.. she din't.. he failed to instill faith and trust in her...Arjun brought out the worst in Maya, that's my grudge against him..some of this grudge won't remain if we get any clue of him making atleast some effort to seek medical help for her when things started looking bad..so far none.. I hope she finds her way back..
P.S- Beyhadh is Maya and Maya is Beyadh.

Only if she starts seeing Arjun as another human being entitled with his own human rights!
Hand cuffing/blind folding, Sedative injections, keeping under 24X7 CCTV monitoring to name a few are gross denial of human rights!

It is another matter if Arjun can get as pathetic as he is at present! He may continue to stay with her for money! The argument that he is only a willing slave does not make Maya good!

this post is meaningful...coz it speaks facts!. yes... I will agree Maya is the hero and villain of beyhadh. just like Amy in GG. and why I say she is villain is ... just because she might have killed and /.or may kill in the future. even Amy has killed in GG remember? so wont b surprised. if the makers put in a twist there it wud b awesome. but I wonder.

next time for ppl still calling her a vamp and all that crap--- /ignore.
