@Darcy after running through this thread I came to the most balanced post ie yours. It was known even from promo that Beyhadh is going to be dark. It is going to have flawed characters. It is the story about Maya the girl and Maya the perceptions. It was not going to be run of the mill love story where man is trapped with bad woman and then good girl go and save him.
People are so used to EK Maiyya's hypocrite sacrificing bahus they are unable to comprehend the depth of a character like Maya or the effort CVs put in writing her both character wise and the metaphor wise.

I strongly wish we have more such shows where we have human characters than vamp with hypocrite mahan atmas.

I won't call her as 'vamp', though I won't call her as a 'demigod' either. It all depends on how we are perceiving Maya. She is indeed an unconventional character and the story does revolve around her. But her current actions are being called as vampish because in order to prove that she is unlike typical female leads, she is shown as going overboard in manhandling and killing creatures stuff like that.
It is in human nature to automatically sympathize with the one who is telling you the saddest story; right now no matter how strong, out-of-the-box, unorthodox Maya's story is, people are empathizing with Arjun's side of the story too.

They need to move past the abla naari type Bahus and realize that real people aren't perfect like gopi bahu! They are more like Maya who make mistakes!

If you compare Maya with Rashi in Saath Nibhana Saathiya, I would say that Rashi has done the worst things than her. Rashi was very bad from the beginning. She had manipulated the man she wanted to, marry in order to take the place of a wife, thereby depriving another girl of her happiness. However, Rashi still has got many fans. There are so many people who love Rashi. She has died a respectable death despite her misdeeds.

I think people have got so used to seeing Mahaan devi's and doormats with no self respect as heroines or leads, that they think a female who stands up for herself, who breaks relationships because she is not happy with them, who is not perfect and capable of manipulation is actually a "Vamp". This is only possible on Indian TV! People have been so conditioned to seeing Gopi Bahu or Sasural Makki types that they can't even imagine someone like Maya being a heroine!

Fact remains, Maya is not "good". But neither is she totally "bad". She had good qualities. But most have been submerged in her insecurities and obsessions. She is so afraid of losing Arjun that she has imprisoned him. Similar to what she did to Jhanvi. What is inconvenient about Beyhadh is that it doesn't have just white and black characters. No one is perfect and no one is a Mahaan godlike character. Even Saanjh has acted in the wrong way many times. No amount of white washing will change that. Maya is wrong too. So is Arjun, Vandana, Ayaan, Jhanvi. In fact everyone. They all act like humans! They are not caricatures but based on real people! Real people are always grey. To what extent and what shade is determined by their circumstances and their character! That is it!

I don't get all these comments of Maya sexually assaulting Arjun! I have not seen any such thing. She has touched Arjun, sometimes when he is asleep sometimes when he is awake. But she has never tried to have Sex with him when he was unconscious! That "sedation" in the ambulance was to stop him leaving, NOT to sexually assault him. I don't get what part of that was a sexual assault. Yes it was an "assault" coz she sedated him. But after that she just slept on his chest. I didn't see any sexual violation? Don't get that part at all. Even the part where Maya tried to seduce Arjun and there were all these comments of Rape? What rape? She didn't force him. So how can it be assault? If your wife / husband, makes advances towards you, that is them trying to get close or seduce. If you don't want to engage in it and say no but they force themselves on you, THAT is assault. I didn't actually see any such extreme take place?

Ayaan's actions? I was shocked by them. But I will reserve jusgement till the episodes because I still can't believe what I saw! Will he really tear Maya's clothes and push her around? I hope not. I am saying it more for Ayaan's sake! I understand his anger and in his shoes I would be angry too. But this is only going to ruin him. So I hope he doesn't do any such thing. He has NO idea who he is engaging with. All this time Maya liked him. But after this incident, he will be in the bad books too! She will surely not spare him at all. Samay? He seems like an obsessed guy just like Maya. I am waiting to see more of him to figure him out!

100x THIS. Please make a separate post. Fanaticism exists between both the factions of fans. I'm so appalled.

I'll only address why Arjun's not able to gauge and understand the root cause of Maya's abnormal behavior let alone tackle her.

They've always showed how Maya and Arjun are incompatible on so many levels. Actually it's hard even for someone with unending, unconditional love to wag their tail around fulfilling Maya's whims and fancies like a lap dog, so how can one expect that kind of devotion from Arjun who's not even LOVED Maya in the first place?

Mostly correct! All human beings have some degrees of good & bad qualities!
In Maya's case, her behavior in the eyes of a 'normal'(?) person- does not look normal!
She has crossed many lines & and looks well set to go for extreme!
And what is going to be that 'extreme'? One shudders to imagine!

@Fernandes43:

If she is anything like Amy in Gone Girl, then watch out. What I am waiting to see are her master plans and the games she will play. Yes Arjun was insensitive and didn't understand her. He admitted himself to Ayaan that he is paying for the fact that he loved her and married her, and yes he knew Maya's love was Beyhadh. But to this extent? He had NO idea.

A lot of people say when they start having problems with an over-possessive spouse or partner. "It was not like this at the start", or "He/she was not like this before marriage" etc. Sometimes people keep some of their extremes hidden in the wooing stage or the courtship stage. Sometimes they show some of their extremes once the relationship is more established or you are married.

Therefore, Arjun not being able to fathom the level of Maya's issues or the depth of the pit he was falling into, I can understand. But, there are always signs. You just have to pick up on them. But more often than not, the "Full Picture" is not available to you till much later. Once you have already signed on the dotted line. Arjun is essentially trapped. Maya has made it look like HE is the problem so that he can never leave. If he tries to leave, she does something extreme and if something were to happen to her, Arjun will always come under suspicion. One can't help but feel some empathy or sympathy for Arjun's situation.

The guy's biggest fault was underestimating the situation he was getting into. Yes, he wanted the high life. Yes, he is paying the price for it. But fact remains, I think even for a short time, he did have some real feelings for her. He cared about her. Probably deep inside some humanity is still left towards her. But her control has wrung all the love and passion out of him. He loved Maya the "liberator". The Maya who gave him the chance to become "The" Arjun Sharma he became after meeting her. But he cannot love his jailor, Maya. You can't love someone who imprisons you. Love thrives on freedom. Love by it's nature is a force that cannot ever be held or controlled. The irony is, if only Maya had set him free, let him breathe, he would have freely given her the love she craves. But by trying to keep him locked in her golden cage, she has achieved the opposite. Because control will always be faced by rebellion. Not acquiescence. The difference between the Maya now and the Maya then was that she gave Arjun the "Illusion" of freedom before. Now she doesn't even do that. Her manipulations and games are totally obvious now. I am waiting for her to be cunning again. That version is a lot more interesting to watch.

Great! But what I don't understand is, why Arjun is not exploring his options?
Like, approaching a professional marriage counselor could be one!
Another is a genuine effort to seek a medical solution to her problems if that can cure her illness!
Has he already tried and failed for want of co-operation from Maya's side!?
Or he is just irresponsible!
It is not clear at all!
