Absolutely loved your post. I'm glad someone put this up and more so, because it came from you, someone whose topics I personally enjoy. The writers are just throwing away things here and there with regards to Maya's mental illness. It's so difficult to be able to categorise her or even make a guess at what could be her condition because everything is just all over the place.

I can only go as far as saying that she seems to be a case of multiple mental/personality disorders. There's not just one but quite a complicated mess of many conditions put together. Not too sure but I have read that people with certain kind of mental conditions who haven't received timely treatment, weren't treated right or didn't receive treatment at all are prone to violence at later stages.

But if they put it all on depression in the end, I might punch someone in the face. 😳

^^ That made an interesting read to me and kinda reminded me of Maya's character.

Thanks Annihilation, I hope you get back to making new topics here too! They are always a treat to read.

Oh a 100% CVs are just throwing it around, I was hoping that maybe we have some major characteristics that match a real illness by mistake. 😆

I still don't see the Multiple Personality Disorder, but we will have to see and find out for sure.

I am also worried that the issue she has will very extremely anti-climactic. But can you also imagine the CV's coming up and saying she is a Psychopath - I don't think it would sit well with the audience. It would have to be something easy to understand yet still differs from what many uninformed people about mental illness would consider just crazy.

And I took at the article, yes, I can also see Maya in some of those instances expect for the one where they do it to get thrill out of it. I think Maya acts the way she does if she wants something or if it comes to Ashwin or her mother, otherwise she is not concerned.

Interesting take on Maya and why she might be a Psychopath!

For sure Psychopaths learn to have relationships that benefit them but I am not sure if Arjun is beneficial to her in that sense. In the last few episodes you may have seen that she is now standing up to Ashwin on her own. She found that strength through seeing Arjun confront him, but she isn't exactly using him.

Additionally, Psychopaths are born in like this while Maya's environment made her like this (like a Sociopath). This is the most important thing that stops me from thinking that she is a Psychopath. Because I think she fits all other characteristics, such as smart, cunning, very little regard for right and wrong, will stop at nothing once she knows what she wants and etc.

Until I read your comment, I thought her attachment to her mother is something that also doesn't classify her as a Psychopath BUT, you've got me thinking...

Maya is a traumatized person, she is also a lonely person, having her mother by her side is beneficial to her, it keeps her sane and so, she will never let her mother leave. Lets face it, she is abusive to her mother too. She locks her up to stop her from leaving, threatens and more. But when this happens, she reacts in a impulsive, hot headed manner, i.e. a Sociopath.

So that being said, is her attachment to her mother love? Or a Psychopath/Sociopath who knows that the only reason of her sanity is her mother and therefore she cannot ever let her leave. And is it a similar thing with Arjun too now?

^Just a thought, pretty sure it isn't like this (disagreeing with my own theory 😆) but its an alternative way that one can perceive Maya's character.

And who knows, you may have met a psychopath but you might not have even known, they're extremely smart. 😆

You're theory definitely has some strength in it. I was 100% sure about Maya being a psychopath before reading your post, which made me rethink and research a bit more 😆. What makes me think that she isn't a sociopath is simply because there is no strong evidence supporting it. Sociopathy too is genetic, so we can't say that her abusive past is the reason for her anti-social behavior.
I feel her relationship with her Mom and Arjun both serve some utility for her as well. Just imagine Maya without Arjun and her Mom - pretty much void of purpose. Her company would have been her sole love then. Lone psychopaths treat their careers like their babies. (The terminology I use here is ironical)

From my guts I could say that 'attachment' does not mean the same for psychopaths as it means for the normal folks. Lack of emotional attachment doesn't mean lack of general attachment. Psychopaths are pretty devoted to what they think is important - no wonder so many of them are successful at least in material terms. They could treat their relationships the very same way they treat their careers.

I am not sure if what I feel is what the general population feels - I personally do not love some one just because they are related to me(my parents are no exception). Just a random info because I have felt guilty about this in the past, and this guilt probably came because I am NOT a psycopath. I am a child abuse survivor so it was pretty difficult for me to understand how healthy relationships function without professional help and a support system (because of all that manipulation by my abusers just so I start believing that all that was normal and I deserve d that treatment).

Psychopaths lack guilt, and i have never seen Maya feel guilty. Psychopaths are erratic unlike sociopaths - and I feel that Maya gets erratic occasionally. They are unpredictable and so is Maya. They are experts at manipulation unlike sociopaths, and Maya is so manipulative that even some audiences are left confused at some scenes.

Maya knew that what was happening to her is wrong - at least from what was shown to us in the show - so there is more anger in her than confusion about social norms and healthy relationships. That could explain her aggressive behavior and unnecessary violence. This also means that her overall anti social behavior is not a result of her abuse but rather her genes (no surprises here- she is Ashwin's daughter) and only the violence aspect was aggregated by her abuse. She otherwise knows how to look normal in order to manipulate people.
Maya was born a psycopath and her abuse only strengthened her intuition which dictates that anyone who comes in her path to happiness is just a soul-less human being.

Psychology is too complex even for professionals, let alone patients and normal folks. Even psychopaths don't fulfill all the stated characteristics of being a psycopath.

Unless the writer has deeply researched the issue or has straight away based Maya on a real life person, we can never be sure if the makers really are trying to make a serious case a psycopath here.

And mention of Multiple Personality Disorder(DID) in Maya's case annoys me. DID is a super rare disorder wherein someone starts believing and behaving like they are someone else at times. These are extreme cases - like someone started believing he was Napoleon and started speaking French - a language he never learned.
This disorder was the basis of movie Bhool Bhulaiyya. (A good movie- watch it)

The reason DID is so commonly heard of is because it is so mysterious and scientists haven't yet figured it out. It's become a popular topic in entertainment culture plainly because of its mysteriousness. It's considered a proof of ghosts capturing humans by believers of supernatural world.

Read about it, it is interesting.
