CHAPTER 1 (B)

Recap: He didn't have the heart to face the truth..the reality..the rejection..She wouldn't miss him..Preetika rao wouldn't miss Harshad Arora,the news would make the headlines, if the journalists could get their hadns on it...He chided himself when his thoughts articulated into a coherent sentence..and he said it out loud.."And me..Won't you miss me Pree..?"

There was a playful smirk tugging at the corner of her lips,but that was momentary,as it faded out as son as she heard his voice..His voice,which demanded her to look at him.But PReetika Rao knew that she wouldn't be able to ...because she was sure that Harshad would be able to look look all her lies,just the way he could see through all the smiles that she had faked to hide the maelstrom of churning emotions and the raging storm within herself.

"No..I wouldn't.."She continued.."Would you..?"

A sudden gust of wind coming from the open windows almost made her heart stop,as she waited with baited breath for his answer..

"No..."

She felt the tears sting the corner of her eyes as ...a small twinge of pain in her heart..a small wavelet of regret and emptiness...Preetika stared at hum blankly ..their bodies were mere inches apart..Feeling his keen gaze on her,she shifted in her place.

"You're crying.."

"Excuse Me..?" She raised her eyebrows in mock consternation.

"Yea..you're crying..i saw tears in the corner of your eyes..."He stated in a mater-of-fact tone.

She quickly got up..and turned her face away from him.

"NNo..am not.."She could feel his burning gaze on her ..he was standing right behind her..and she was feeling intimidated and flustered.And it was a first time for Preetika,considering the fact that Harsahd came across as a very friendly person,and not an intimidating one.

She whipped around,only to end up colliding aginst his chest.."yes you are.."She could feel her heart drum against her chest..and she was sure that its echoing sound could be heard in the silence of the darkness.

Her thoughts garbled up in her mind,and a delicious sensation coursed through her body,as his face inched closer to her...and hers moved in sync..

It was a brief moment,a fraction of a ten thousandth part of a sec,when their lips brushed against each other...

But then it was just a moment..a tiny one..They pushed each other away..or maybe their conscience did...It was not what they had anticipated.

Harshad raked both his hands through his hair...nervously pacing the room.It wa ssomethign that eh did when he was flustered.She had taken note of that over the months..

"Harshad.."He cut her short.."Um...I'm re-really s-sorry..."

Preetika looked at him,her eyes almost unreadable.."Me too.."She repeated along his line.

Silence gnawed at her insides,as she waited for him to finish what he had started.She wondered whetehr Harshad would go to the extent of calling that fraction of a ten thousandth second a mistake.

But why was she worrying herself sick over it..Not that she was in love' with him..?It was just an infatuation tight..?They would move one..and everything would be like that fraction of a ten thousandth second never really existed.Preetika tried to reason herself out of the situation

But somewhere deep down in her heart, the sole thought made her cringe.

"Maybe..it was a mistake..."

She stopped to take in the verity of his words...he had just said it out loud,after all she had known it all along the way that the looming moment when he would call it a mistake would actually metamorphose into reality!

"Yea..ofcourse.."she whispered back...into the darkness

The silence stretched thinner and thinner, like a balloon blown big, until the temptation to rupture it was too great to resist.

"Its getting late..I should probably leave now.."

She wanted to gather her left-over self-esteem,and walk away before she crumbled down into the ground in fornt of him.

Gathering her stole tightly around her body,she picked up her bag,and proceeded to leave,when.."Go out with me.."

His comment was so out of character, so far from what she knew of him,that she just stared at him open mouthed. Her brain formulated no thoughts other than to register that she was shocked. She closed her mouth, then looked at her toes before glancing back up to catch his brown orbs . "I think I'll go now Harshad..," was all she could say.

"no..Stop..please.."his voice was distressingly bare,almost pleading her to just stay back for a bit..

"HArshad.."Preetika began,fumbling for words to reply to his gibberish talk.

"Yeah..Go out with me..."

"Where?"

"On a date"like"like a couple...?"

Her heart caught in her throat. She would've jumped at the prospect, but at the moment she felt as if she was sinking, especially after his confession of it' being a mistake.

"I can't.." her voice was unexpected. It was low, with an agreeable trace of huskiness ..

"Why?"His voice was persuasive.

"Because you just said..that it was a mistake.."

"Well you agreed with me on it..."he smirked back at her challengingly.And for a fleeting second,she just wanted to wipe it off his face. IDIOT!

"because.we---"She stopped for a while.She wouldn't fall for his charm and she wouldn't endure a heartbreak

"Because we don't love each other..we never have ...we probably never will.."

Their surroundings feel silent and her voice bleated off into the silent night.It was as if the leaves had stopped rustling,and the widn swooshing past the branches.

"We will never get to know that unless we try.."

"Why the hell are you so insistent on it Harsh..What if..things do-don't work out..what if.."

"6 months..Preetika..ita all that I want.."

"6 months..? So-y-you want it to b-be like a contract..?"she spoke with cold formality.

"Not a deal Pree...If things don't work out..between us..I don't want to hold you back.I want to let go of you..so that you can find someone better...we'll go our separate ways..and.."

"What if..."
"Pree I don't want to live with the regret of not knowing whether we would've ever worked out or not.."

Harshad wanted to strangle tose who said that Silence was golden.because for him, in that moment it clearly was not...he wanted her to say something,anything at all..

"So what are the conditions...I mean since we have a term..it shloud have conditions too right..?"She laughed at him sardonically.

"I don't want to see you with anyone else..."

"Well the same is applicable to you to..and anyone also includes...Gunjan Vijaya.."

"Why? Are you insecure or jealous..."His lisp upturned into a crooked smile,and Preetika found it hard to concentrate on anything apart form that.

"Preetika.."Harshad's voice was calm ,so soft,almost seductive.She loved how his tongue caressed her name...

"No.of course not.."she stammered.

"Okay.."

"Okay?"

"Okay.."
