Hello members,
One of the most common rants of male Indian Television viewers is lack of quality fiction programming on GECs because of which hardly any guy that I know watches these daily soaps.
Begusarai was launched with unprecedented publicity and the fact that Tigmanshu Dhulia had conceptualized this show was one of the reasons that made me watch it from day one. This show captivated me with its attention to detail, the perfect casting, the uber-cool story-line..it felt as if I am watching a movie, something like Gangs of Wasseypur unfold before my eyes. The scale was lavish and I hoped that this show would turn out to be the game changer that Indian Tv was praying for.
Finally here was a show that guys would love to watch equally and majority of the guys at my office shared this view. For the first time ever we guys were discussing an Indian show at office- during lunch, at coffee machine, during the bus ride back home. Yes we were excited..and then within a week Begusarai stated coming apart.
Instead of creating several parallel tracks the makers decided that all we want is a 'love triangle'. Really Begusarai?? If people wanted to watch yet another love story they could blindly press any button on their remote and there it would be. Every show on every channel has a love story. Is that all that happens in Begusarai,in India ?
You have an awesome cast- the guy playing the Thakur khandaan supremo grabs your attention like a Boss but apart from a kickass introductory scene he is being used as a filler. Mithilesh, even though he is a mini Big B,performs really well in his scenes. Shweta Tiwari returns to TV in what would have turned out to be her most challenging role till date, a role that would have won her awards but the way her track is progressing Bindiya is turning out to be completely unidirectional. Vaishnavi Dhanraj- the best actress of recent times is being completely, totally wasted. I have loved her in CID and my family was a big fan of Na Aana Is Des Laado..she was pure dynamite in that show and we were waiting for her to ignite the screen but Maya is being made to serve tea nonstop.
& TV was supposed to be a different channel with a new and fresh content, a new direction of programming. It made unmitigated business sense to involve Indian males who are a solid 50% of potential viewership but after a promising couple of episodes the channel/creatives seem to have gone back to mediocrity and sleep walking. 75% of telecast is devoted to the teeny bopper love triangle leaving the rest of the time to be divided among the more promising and exciting tracks. If this was the direction the show was to go then a more apt name would have been something like- Padosi Sajanwa, Gussewale Saajan, Bandook aur Pyar...
Needless to add I have given up on this show and so has the entire office. What really hurts is that Indian TV would remain a slave to these done to death love tracks and channels would fail to realize their potential. I regret that the once in a lifetime opportunity to see such talent perform to their respective potential has been wasted. Imagine Phoolan Thakur vs Mithilesh, Imagine Bindiya vs Maya.. that would have been sheer fireworks but I guess everyone but the 'creatives' are creative in the land of hopelessness that's Indian Television.
Goodbye Begusarai , Goodbye And TV- you were too good to last.
