Part Thirty One: A Walk Down the Memory Lane
Amar was sitting in a sofa flipping channels with a gloomy face; there was nothing in the television that interested him. He missed his wife who went shopping with his cousin in preparation for their upcoming honeymoon. Divya entered the room with a lot of shopping bags. She dropped them on the floor and rushed to Amar, sat on his lap and embraced his shoulders. "I am so sorry. It took forever to get all the things I wanted. Were you bored?"
"Had fun shopping?" he embraced her and smiled.
"Yesss! I have got so many things for you and me. I never liked shopping before. But now…" she smiled bashfully and left the sentence in midair.
"Now you like shopping? Why? Don't tell me you have some secret agenda to bankrupt your poor husband?"
"Hmm…" she made a cute face, "I thought you gave away everything to me, your heart, soul, life, even your house and all your earthly belongings! Why would I bankrupt myself?" she smiled smugly rolling her eyes.
"My adorably smart wife, you are absolutely right there. But why this sudden change in taste?"
"Because of you -my hotshot interrogating husband!" Divya pinched his nose.
"Huh?" he looked confused.
Divya blushed and avoided his eyes, "Before I never cared about how I looked, what I wore, but now I want to look beautiful for you and impress you."
"Really? All this for me? Hmmm…There was no need for that darling. I am utterly impressed, no, mesmerized by you! I pinch myself to see if I am dreaming or not. But since you have gone through all that trouble, let's have a fashion show! Show me what you've got. If you can make my jaws drop, you'll get a reward too." He winked meaningfully!
She beamed, "Really?"
"Why not? Let's have a preview of how you'd look in our honeymoon!"
"Okay. Ummm what's the prize?" she was dying to show him all the new clothes but pretended she would only do it if the reward was worthy of the hard work!!
"Hmmm. You want a peek? Alright..No problem…Preview coming up" He said so very casually and before Divya could comprehend fully the meaning of his words, she was caught in a tight embrace and a passionate kiss, making her pulse rage and her heart beat louder than the Olympic drums!!
----
"Divya you cheated last night."
Divya looked at Amar who sat next to her holding her hand. "What are you talking about?" She had no idea what Amar was referring to.
He smiled, "you forced me to give away the prize without the fashion show, remember?"
Blood rushed to her face remembering last night. "You.."
"Please fasten you seat belts and remain seated. We are about to land shortly." The captain announced in a husky voice interrupting her. She decided to ignore him as a punishment and looked outside. But she could hear his faint chuckles.
"Okay darling I am sorry. I can't promise that I won't tease you ever again but I promise I will bring it down a notch! It's hard not to, you are such an easy prey! And I have only one wife. What can I do? You can't imagine how beautiful you look when you blush! It's so hard to resist!"
Divya just frowned, said nothing.
"Hey Wifee..Sorryyy. Please forgive me. He made a cute face.
She had to smile, she ruffled his hair and leaned on his shoulder and closed her eyes.
"Divya"
"Huu"
"I don't understand one thing. People go to Switzerland or Hawaii or the Caribbean's for their honeymoon. Why are we going to Ireland?"
"Because I had a dream about us walking in a meadow by a lake in Ireland."
"Really? You never told me about this dream."
"I dreamt about it long time ago, before even knowing we would meet one day!"
Amar forgot all his teasing, didn't say a word and stared at her silently. Divya couldn't read his eyes but she was sure of one thing, Amar loved her more than anything, anyone in the world. She felt content and gazed into his eyes with a silent smile on her lips.
------
"Wow, have to give it to you, this is really beautiful. You dreamt about this place? Amazing! Please tell me about the dream."
"Well I saw that we were walking hand in hand here and I slipped and you caught me." She eyes were dreamy remembering the most romantic dream she ever had.
"That's not at all romantic yaar! You dragged me all the way here 'cos of this boring lifeless dream. I knew something is wrong with you when you decided to marry me!"
Ufff…Never mind, you won't understand. Let's walk. She pulled his hand moving forward with a little force but he lost balance because he stepped on some loose gravel and nearly slipped down the valley. Divya panicked but her natural reflex made her hold him with all her might. Amar regained balance and pulled her down towards him, held her close to his body, picked her chin up and smiled at her.
His crooked smile made her heart race; his warm breath on her face made every cell in her body rejoice, they declared independence as she was not in control of them anymore and her face became crimson. She closed her eyes trying to savor every nano second.
"Ah…that's better" he said as he traced the lines of her cheek bone with his finger tip. "You were as white as a ghost a second ago and got me worried." He whispered hiding a low chuckle. He kissed her closed eyelids, gently cradling her face with one hand and pulling her even close to him with another.
"Hey open your eyes." He said as he cuddled her nose.
"You can't stop now! It wasn't like this!!" She cried. This is not the way it happened!"
"What are you talking about?" Amar was confused.
"You are supposed to slide your nose down my neck, kiss my collar bone and then kiss my shoulder. Exactly here!" she pointed at her shoulder!
"I am supposed to do that?" he grinned and his eyes sparkled.
She realized this wasn't her dream and she just made a complete fool of herself "I am not talking to you anymore. This is not funny." She flushed, pushed him and hastily started walking back.
Amar grabbed her hand and muttered "don't go"
He embraced her from behind, inhaled the smell of her hair and then
slowly kissed the hollow behind her left ear, and brushed his lips along her neck and kissed her shoulder, with both his hands entwined in hers!
"Is this good?" he whispered again.
An angelic smile brightened her face. "Ummm…Can't really say. I am confused, my brain stopped functioning for a while. Can I have a replay?" she whispered back.
She felt a tap on her shoulder. Her reverie ended and she opened her eyes to see Sharad standing in front of her. His swollen eyes brought her back to the horrid reality! Tears welled up in her eyes, she held Amar's letter close her heart "Sharad.." she uttered barely audibly.
"Everything will be fine Divya. We will fight this." He said with so much determination as he needed to convince himself along with Divya. "But now you need to go home to Sagar and Sanvi, both are cranky without seeing you for such a long time. Help them to sleep, take some rest yourself and come back. I will take over till then."
"No Sharad. I can't go. Amar will wake up any moment. I need to be here." She went and sat in the chair and held Amar's hand.
"You won't be of any help to him if you are tired. I will call you as soon as he wakes up. Trust me Divya. Please let me keep my promise to Amar." Sharad's voice cracked as he made false promises about Amar waking up. The doctors informed him about everything.
She realized Sharad was right. Sagar and Sanvi must be missing their parents. Amar would also want that and there is no way she would go against Amar's wishes. Her heart was shattered but her recent walk down the memory lane gave her hope and courage to fight. She nodded, stood up and kissed Amar's forehead and left for home.
