FF--Circle of Love
Part One: Misery and Hope: Twin Sisters
The doorbell rang Ding Dong!
Divya's heart missed a beat. He is here! She is going to the graduating party for seniors in High school with the most amazing and handsome man she had ever known—who she idealized and worshiped from first grade. Sharad Malhotra! Every girl in high school dreams about him every night. Every girl has a picture of him in her locker even if she is going steady with someone. He is an attraction and enigma no one can escape! But tonight he will only dance with her. Tonight she will be the center of his attention! She knows after tonight he will be hers forever!
Trembling with nervousness and shyness, blushing crimson red she opened the door!
"Amar?!!" She couldn't conceal her shock, surprise and disappointment!
Amar, the quietest person is class, who is bound to create history because all the teachers believe he would do something spectacular in life, who is no less than a genius, who never got a B in his life smiled awkwardly, "Hello Divya."
Divya's anxious eyes searched behind him, may be Sharad is in the car still. Amar and Sharad are best friends, a surprising pair because there is nothing in common between them. Sharad is captivatingly charming, always surrounded by girls, always in a joyous mood creating an aura of mystery with each step he takes, enjoying every single second of his life! Where as Amar probably never talked with any girl about non-school related stuff in his life, probably thinks about finding a solution to the Middle East crisis, or Fermat's last theorem in his leisure and probably dreams in Euclidean space!
"Err, Divya, I need to tell you something." He said coyly.
"Why don't you come in Amar" Divya tried to be hospitable. She couldn't hide her sadness and discontent. She waited for this day all her life! She spent almost all of last week getting ready! For a girl who is most comfortable in jeans and a sweatshirt with head full of unruly hair tied in a pony tail, it took a lot of effort from the three of them Rimi, Monica and her to turn an ordinary simple girl into princess Aurora straight from the fairy tale of sleeping beauty-who was awaken to life by her prince charming!
She looked at Amar with query filled eyes hoping desperately that he is not the messenger of a bad news; dreadful news that Sharad will not dance with her tonight, that all her dreams will be shattered even before the night starts.
"Sharad..Err…Will you-- Will you go to the dance with me Divya?"
She couldn't comprehend his words. Why is he asking her to go with him? Everyone in school knows she is the luckiest girl alive, she is the chosen one. Why such an illogical proposal from the most talented person she had ever known?
"Amar..Err..I am afraid I am going with Sharad. He should be coming soon." She held on to her dreams at all cost with all the hopes each of her blood cell could generate.
"There is a problem Divya. Sharad cannot" he paused trying to read her reactions, giving her time to absorb "take you to the dance."
"Is he--is he okay?" her heartfelt concern prompted an immediate reply,
"Yes,..err..he is fine."
Divya stared at Amar with disbelief. Tears brimmed up in her wide expressive eyes, about to cross the barriers created by her long eyelashes.
"Divya. He whispered, "We don't have to go to the dance. I wasn't planning on either. But please will you come with me, please? There is a place I go often. You will like it, I know you will. Please?"
The urgency in his voice created some unknown feelings inside her. She wanted to be alone, wanted cry lying in her bed hugging her teddy bear but at the same time she didn't want to stay at home alone and think about her misfortune. Her brain wanted to block out the information she just received about Sharad. She didn't even want to know why Sharad changed his mind.
She stood in front of Amar with a blank look in her eyes, like a sulking princess who was deceived by life. Her prince abandoned her, would never come riding a white horse to save her from her mundane life!
Amar took a step closer, held her lifeless, unresisting hand gently and drew her toward the door.
