Part 9
June 17, 2011
I have no words to describe what has happened today.
Sometimes, I wonder why I even keep a journal. More often than not, things that happen to me are too personal to disclose to even this impersonal, non-judging spiral notebook.
I am married?
---
Divya walked down the stairs, suddenly feeling anxious. She wanted to see him, tell him. At the same time, how could she tell him? How would she explain? Did she have to even tell him?
---
She felt like Lizzie from Pride and Prejudice. Well, at least that's how she thought Lizzie must have felt when Darcy watched her walk. Except in her life, her Darcy, err...Amar, was watching her put up the party decorations in the living room. It was Armaan's birthday and Divya took up the responsibility of decorations. And she couldn't get anything done. For the past half hour, as she fiddled with the banners and balloons, Amar had been sitting casually on the sofa, watching her. Just watching her outrageously as if to do so were his right.
When she couldn't take it any longer, she turned around and scowled at him, "What?"
He shrugged, "Nothing."
Sighing, she turned back around and took her position on the stool. Who was she kidding? Turning back around, she said, "Why were you looking at me?"
She was expecting an excuse, even a complete rebuttal that he wasn't looking at her, so imagine her shock when he replied, "Because I want to."
---
Divya quietly sneaked out the front door, fanning herself with her hand. She had thought her brother left alone with a guitar was a disaster. Today, she found out what a nightmare is - 11 teenagers left with their own guitars.
There was another reason for leaving the party, actually. She had hoped Amar would seek her out. Ever since that dream last night, she wanted to be around him. Yet, at the same time, she felt flustered, at a loss of words.
As she was hoping, she heard the squeak of the screen door and saw Amar walking out with two mugs.
"Hot chocolate!" he said, handing her a mug.
"You drink hot chocolate in the summer?" asked Divya.
"Sure, why not? So what are you doing out here?"
Divya sighed, "I figured, either die of a heart attack inside or die of the heat out here."
Amar chuckled, "Heat won, I see. Your brother's having fun though."
Divya smiled, "I know. It's his first birthday after our mother passed away. I didn't want him to miss her presence at least this one day."
Amar looked at her, "But you do."
Divya looked at him. It was as if he could read her mind. "I miss her everyday."
Sighing, he sat down next to her, "Tell me about her."
Divya chuckled, "My dad always said, 'Your mother can be described by the number 10.'"
Amar looked at her, confused, "Why is that?"
Divya smiled, "My mother was a bit dramatic and tended to exaggerate a lot. So my dad would say, 'Divide by ten everything your mother tells you and multiply by ten everything you do wrong.'"
Amar chuckled, "She seems like an interesting woman."
Ok, really boring spot to end but I have to go and I realized it was getting too long anyway. Thanks everyone for reading! 🤗
