I dont think love is a matter of brain. Coming to Hiten and Khemi, she did wrestle with her feelings for long. She even decided to marry Shambu but unfortunately things changed when she was pleading with her God to give her strength to go through and Hiten happened to overhear it. Yes, in a moment of weakness she did elope with him but both had enough sense to not marry in the sly but come back. When she saw the enormity of the sacrifice her sister was willing to do for her, she escaped from there and even married a guy she had just met so that Hiten does not get married to her. As of now she is dutifully discharging her duties to her husband. It is another matter that her husband is a suspicious, egoistic wife beater who believes that his wife is his property and not his partner. Holding her past against her is unfair.
As to the state of Santu and DM's marriage, we knew what state it was in when all these things between Hiten-Khemi was happening. DM barely acknowledged her then and Santu herself felt like a bandini at that place. Even DM's refusal to divorce her initially was more of what the society will think of him rather than a need to keep Santu as his wife. When he felt that he could not do justice to their marriage and was also coming in the way of his son's happiness by staying in this marriage of compulsion he was willing to let go. Even after Hiten-Khemi problem was taken care of by Khemi, he still insisted with going through that divorce for Santu's sake, to let her marry some one more suitable in age for her. This shows that at that point in time, DM did not consider Santu as his wife.
Many at the time considered Khemi and Hiten selfish and Santu and DM selfless but events showed that Khemi was selfless too. She killed her love inorder to safeguard her sister's marriage. Hiten too was willing to give up his love for the sake for protecting his mother's marriage for then he too had accepted her as his mother seeing her sacrifice. Human beings make errors of judgement and there is not a single person in the show who is perfectly blameless. The point is have they changed for the better? We find that both Hiten and Khemi have.
Both of them have put their pasts behind and have moved on. It is not Khemi's fault that Arjan is a narrow minded creature. Why should her friendly behaviour towards Hiten change because of Arjan? Was this not the man who told her that he does not cared about her past? Then why does he view every innocent interaction with Hiten as something else? Hiten and Khemi's interactions have always been quite open and nothing clandestine. Why should it always be the woman who has to be understanding, sacrificing and docile even if her husband is a narrow minded, violent loser?
It would be ridiculous now to make Arjan DM's son after breaking up Hiten and Khemi for the same reason. Personally though I wouldn't mind if it is implied that this indeed is the relationship. Since DM-Santu have already concretised their marriage and their feelings has developed into love (would like to believe DM loves Santu now), their divorce is no longer an option. Khemi should now take this opportunity to divorce Arjan on the same grounds as Santu did earlier, leave the village, go to the city and have a good education which will enable her to stand on her own feet. I am sure the divorce money will come in handy for that. Am dying to see atleast one strong female character here who can take care of herself without male support and Khemi is the right person. She has always been bold enough of question the wrong.
Later they should find out that Arjan is not DM's son but an imposter after DM's wealth. The guy can then be safely locked up.
