Dr Murlidhar Devidas Amte popularly known as Baba Amte, was an Indian social worker and social activist known particularly for his work for the rehabilitation and empowerment of poor people suffering from Leprosy

Trained in law, Amte developed a successful legal practice at Wardha. He soon got involved in the Indian struggle for freedom from the British raj, and started acting as a defense lawyer for leaders of the Indian freedom movement whom the British authorities had imprisoned in the 1942 Quit India Movement. He spent some time at Sevagram ashram of Mahatma Gandhi, and became a follower of Gandhism for the rest of his life. He followed Gandhism, including yarn spinning using a charakha and wearing Khadi

Amte found three ashrams for treatment and rehabilitation of leprosy patients, disabled people, and people from marginalized sections of the society in Maharashtra, India. On 15 August 1949, Amte started his hospital in Anandvan under a tree.

In 1973, Amte founded the Lok Biradari Prakalp to work among the Madia Gond tribal people of Gadchiroli District

Amte devoted his life to many other social causes, the most notable among which were generating public awareness of importance of ecological balance, wildlife preservation

In those days, leprosy was associated with social stigma and the society disowned people suffering from leprosy. There was also a widespread misbelief that leprosy was contagious. Amte strove to dispel the misbelief and once allowed bacilli from a leprosy patient to be injected into him while participating in an experimental test aimed at proving that leprosy was not contagious.

Today, Anandwan and Hemalkasa village have one hospital, each. Anandwan has a university, an orphanage, and schools for the blind and the deaf. Currently, the self-sufficient Anandwan ashram has over 5,000 residents. The community development project at Anandwan in Maharashtra is recognized around the world. Besides Anandwan, Amte later founded "Somnath" and "Ashokwan" ashrams for treating leprosy patients.

On 9 February 2008 Baba bid us the final farewell after accomplishing much, after paving a new path, after entrusting us with a lot of duties and social responsibilities. As always, Maharogi Sewa Samiti will be carrying forward these duties and responsibilities with dedication and determination. For us, through his work and wisdom, through his ideas and ideals, Baba will remain ever alive.

Baba Amte was honored with numerous national and international awards for his selfless service to the society his entire life. The Government of India presented him with the Padma Shree Award in the year 1971 and then the Padma Vibhushan in the year 1986. The Welfare of the Disabled award was presented to him in the year 1986 and Gandhi Peace Prize in 1999. Among the host of international awards Baba Amte got were Damien-Dutton Award in 1983, the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service in 1985 .

Baba blessing a child
Manu.. .outstanding post... in the context of today's materialistic and selfish world ! It is thought provoking ... stimulating and inspires even ordinary mortals to do some thing good to the society !

I don't want to be a great leader.
I want to be a man who goes around with a little oil-can and,
whenever he sees a breakdown, offers his help.
To me the mechanic with the oil-can, that is my ideal in life...Baba Amte .

Half a century ago a man was moved to the core by the unbearable miseries, agony and social ostracism being suffered by victims of leprosy.

It was sufficient to help him realize what his life's mission ought to be. He wanted to be faithful to his conscience. He relinquished his luxurious life style, his lucrative profession and voluntarily embraced poverty to identify himself with the deprived and the depressed. The rest of his life was a saga of struggle, a struggle against the infirmities of the mind of man, a struggle against the cruelties of the world.

The rest of his life was a poem in action; a beautiful poem of self-less service, of creative compassion, of unflinching faith, of determination, love and peace.

Yes, ...the reference here is to none else than the great humanitarian Baba Amte, who has been honoured with several prestigious awards including international ones such as The Templeton Prize (popularly know as the Nobel Prize for Religion) and The Right Livelihood Award (popularly known as the Alternative Nobel Prize).

But for such a great person as Baba who says: "I want no Nobel Prize. I have ever sought but a noble enterprise; the smile of a man who is oppressed or a child who is suffering is what I covet more than any award."

What are these awards? What prize can equal his service and sacrifice? What words can describe his vision and mission? No doubt, no awards and recognitions can ever do full justice to him.

He is simply well beyond them all. He is simply unaffected by bouquets and brickbats.

The Philosophy

I sought my soul, my soul I could not see;
I sought my God, my God eluded me;
I sought my brother and found all three.

This realization of a poet found its fullest expression in the life and work of Baba Amte. He sought not God in the sanctum sanctorum of a temple but found him even in the heart of a disfigured and decomposed leper. He worshipped not by the chanting of mantras, by the offering of flowers, but by the worship of work, by lighting lamps of hope in hearts grown with despair, by serving wounded souls with love and care.

His Anandwan (forest of joy) is not a rehabilitation center where thousands of lepers and other disabled men find food and shelter but it is a school from where they learn lessons of self-help, self respect and selfless service. It is a school from where they learn lessons of co-operation and peaceful co-existence.

"Work Builds; Charity Destroys" is his sublime philosophy. His is a philosophy in action.

He is a Magician who transforms self-pity into Ability; a Mechanic who mends the minds of men; a Messenger who leaves everywhere messages of love and peace!!!

Thanks Manu for enlightening and highlighting the contributions of Baba Amte. He was truly a pious soul who dedicated his life to serve the people, suffering from leprosy. The disease considered to be the most dreadful and contagious, compelled people to throw away their dear ones, who got infected. My salute to Baba Amte for taking care of such causes and coming forward to nurse their wounds also for undertaking various steps for its eradication.
