"...Jagdeesh" she shrieked, jolting her eyes open. Her lips quivering, she clamped her mouth.
She looked up. A couple of ladies were staring at her from their seats, alarmed by her sudden shriek. She shifted her gaze down again, biting her lips, embarrassed by the moment.
After a moment, she felt someone laying a hand on her shoulder. She looked up to her light side. A young girl, carrying a sling bag, with freshly polished nails and wearing neon coloured t-shirt was standing with a bottle in her hand. Anandi assumed she was in college.
The girl smiled. "Are you ok, Anandijee?" She asked, extending the bottle of water to her.
Anandi was taken by surprise. How did she know her? She couldnt recollect meeting her before here?
"Haa, main theek hoon, woh bass buraa sapna dekh liya... aap mera...naam...kaise...jaanti hai?" hesitant, Anandi asked.
"Aap Anandi hai na, theatre actress? ofcourse, mai aapko jaanti hoon..." The young girl giggled in excitement. "Infact maine aapka sabse first play bhi dekha hai, meri mom ne khaas uss play ki cd buy ki thi, because she loved it..sanjeevani right?" She looked at Anandi in an excited manner.
Anandi nodded. Sanjeevani, the play that had changed her life forever. How could she ever forget it? She drifted out of her thought process almost immediately.
"Waise ur a wonderful actress Anandijee, aapke ek ek expressions...you know sabke inspiration movie actors hotey hai, par meri aap hai..such flawless performances from such a young age...I am an aspiring actor myself, maine acting ki institute bhi join ki hai...but aapki tarah I want to only do theatre...not interested in movies...the adrenaline rush of performing in front of live audience is something else na...please give me some tips?" The girl was almost about to jump out of excitement.
Anandi smiled back "Aapka naam kya hai, aur please mujhe sirf Anandi bulao"?
"Grishma, but pyaar se sab mujhe Gulli bulaate hai" she replied.
Amused, Anandi smiled "Toh gulli, pehle toh aapka shukriya, meri itni taareef karne ke liye...aaj ke zamaane mai tumhare jaisi yuva pidhi milni mushkil hai, jo naatako ko mulya samaj sakeyy...ek bahot hi adhboot anubhav hai...there are three things to a play:
1) It's a matter of direct communication between the audience and the actors.
2) Nothing can really equal the awe and sense of hushed expectation which is felt by a theatre audience and the actors as the curtain is slowly raised.
3) The more emotionally involved the audience becomes, the more the actors can play off the atmosphere they are receiving.
You have to live and feel the character...but just remember one thing...sometimes the difference between realism and imagination can thin down to such an extent that a person may get absorbed so much in the character, he or she forgets his own real being...Don't let that happen to yourself."
Anandi finished off thoughtfully. Gulli, surely had not understood most of it, but she was too much in awe of meeting her inspiration.
"Thank u Anandi, I ll surely remember these tips... it was great meeting you in person...really...oye mera station aa gaya" Gulli shook her hands and finally departed to get down at her station.
Anandi looked at her walking away. Such a bright, young and vibrant girl. Maybe still unaware of the googlies that the life could throw. The world of theatre...Anandi sighed...one play that could change her life forever and the same one destroyed it forever.
At that moment, Anandi felt a droplet of water on her palm. Another one, before she could wipe off the first one. The clouds were turning grey...the tiny droplets were gathering at a faster pace. It was beginning to rain outside. She recollected a shayari, which was his favourite -
Girti hui baarish ki bundon ko apne haton me samet lo,
jitna paani tum samet paye utna yaad tum humen karte ho,
jitna pani tum samet nahi paye, utna yaad hum tumhe karte hain..
With a flash of lightening and a sound of rumble...Anandi departed back to her childhood...
...To be continued...
