"...Aaand cut..." boomed the voice.
With a jolt, her thoughts along with her facial expressions broke the stream midway. The image she had seen seemed to have disappeared. Why did it come back? It had been long?!! She took a sharp intake of breath and blinked her eyes a couple of times. A couple of people were standing below the stage and a host of empty seats were around, just the way it should have been. Then why did she see what she did, when she opened her eyes??!! It felt real, it felt eerie.
Finally, pulling a strand of hair out of the face, she moved ahead, with a questioned look, her hands rolled together in anticipation for a response. She still looked like the 8 year old who first stood on this very stage, in this very theatre, waiting for the response to her performance.
"Good work Anandi, as always" her director nodded with an approving smile. He was a middle aged man with a medium sized built. His bespectacled face depicted a picture of someone who was carrying with himself truckloads of experience.
Anandi bowed down in her customary manner. "Thank u sir" she smiled.
"Bhairav sir, lighting arrangement nikaal doo?. aaj ka ho gaya na" called out a spot boy.
"Haa bhai, sab pack up kar do, kal 11 baje sharp, sab yahan aajaana, yeh scene ke aage ka part, kal practice karenge..."
Anandi...tumhe main script de raha hoo, waise kehne ki zaroorat nahi hai, but ek baar padh lena, to get feel of your character for the scenes ahead" He handed over a file to her, which enclosed extensive dialogues and detailed description for the scenes ahead.
"Ji Zaroor sir. Kal gyarah baje tayyaari ke saath aa jaaoongi" Anandi took over the papers and turned towards the green room.
"...Anandi" Bhairav called out. She turned back. "Ji, sir?"
"If you dont mind, kucch pucch sakta hoo?" Bhairon asked after mulling over it.
"Zaroor Sir" she looked blank.
"I noticed that after the shot came to an end, you looked a bit flustered...Why were u scared after opening your eyes?" He looked at her straight into her eyes.
Anandi was taken aback. Shifting her glance, "Sir...nahi aisa kucch nahi hai, woh achanak aankhen kholi issi liye aapko aisa laga hoga" she mumbled.
Bhairav smirked. "10 saal se theatre chala raha hoo, aur 4 saal se tumhare saath kaam kar raha hoo, actor ke expression ek minute main pehchaan jaata hoon Anandi...anyway, u can go now, kal baat karenge". He turned away.
Anandi bit her lip and at a slow pace walked away. After changing into her dailywear, she walked out of the theatre.
She passed through a crowded market, towards the railway station to climb into a local train, lost in her ownself.
After waiting for a few minutes, she stepped into the train and got seated near the window. It was relatively empty.
Finding her moment of peace, she closed her eyes.
It was black again. For some moments all she saw, was black. At a steady pace, a spiral shaped circle moved around her, her eyes still closed...first at a slow pace. Gradually the pace of the circle increased. It moved faster and faster.
And then, one by one it all started coming back...
the sounds of innocent laughter,
the noise of kids running, circling around a tree,
the pair of married dolls,
the swings,
the jumping in the puddle...her eyes wrinkled, her breath faster yet again...the black had dissolved, only to be overtaken by a sepia coloured background, with clear images.
And suddenly, it all turned blood red...
...the swing...
...the ring...
...two hands...
...the fire...
"...Jagdeeesh..." she shrieked, jolting her eyes open. Her lips quivering, she clamped her mouth.
It had all come back to haunt her.
...To be continued.
