After watching today's epi I think self-respect is the last thing on Shiv's mind when/if he refuses Anandi marrying him to fulfil her mother's wishes. The only thing he wants is her happiness. He doesnt want her to marry him because she is pressurised but only if she wants to.
This is what true love is.. putting that person's happiness ahead of your own /thinking about that other person before you think of yourself.
Hi poiu,
when I said "self-respect", I did not mean that in an arrogant egotistical sense of false pride -- like "who does she think i am? how dare she agree to marry me because of her mother's promise?"
I meant it in exactly the sense that you are saying ...
a lesser man would only have thought of self-gratification and would have used the mother's promise to his advantage and exploited the situation thinking "good, good, I now have an easy in with anandi"
but he didnt do that ... to show concern about someone else's happiness is a very high form of self-respect ... meaning that he would not be able to chase his own happiness at the cost of anandi's unhappiness.
Believe me, lots of people would not have had that integrity.
