Chapter 6
Recap: Shiv has started ignoring Anandi after her rejection. He has almost confessed his reasons for agreeing to marry Anandi but Anandi ignored to see it. In the meanwhile, the villagers have not received their compensation from the govt, and Anandi decides to go on a hunger strike with them. Shiv refused to join in.
There was mayhem back in Shiv's office. Bheem Singh watched helplessly as Shiv threw his tie away and angrily dropped the files on his table. Then he angrily landed himself on the chair. Then he got up and paced up and down the room and kicked the door out of anger.
"Why did she sit for the hunger strike", he was muttering to himself."I told her I will resolve the matter as soon as possible, but no, she does not trust me. She has to do her own will. Let her be hungry and thirsty, who cares" Shiv said fumingly.
Bheem Singh had never seen his Sir so angry---he has always been a very calm man, a man of immense control. Yet today he looked like an impatient teenager ready to burst out. As he wondered what might have triggered this calm man's outburst he got a glass of cold water to cool him down. But Bheem's bringing the water angered Shiv even more.
"Bheem Singh, who asked you to bring water?" he thundered. "There Anandi is thirsty and starving and here you offer me cold water to drink"!
Bheem Singh stammered, "But Sir…"
"Bheem," came the roar again, "did you see today's temperature? Today is one of the hottest days of the season, the heat has reached a record degree and there, Anandi is sitting under the hot sun without a drop of water or a grain of food! Why is that girl so obstinate? Why won't that girl listen to me for once? What will happen if she faints in the heat?"
Bheem Singh didn't know what to say. He thought to himself "So this is the reason why Sir is so restless. He is worried about Anandiji. Kahin Sir ko unse………"
Just then the office orderly entered the room and asked Shiv, "Sir it's almost lunch time, should I bring your meal?"
Shiv looked like he is going to burst out. "No Ram Singh. I will not have my lunch today. I will not eat anything till Anandi breaks her fast. How can you even assume that I will eat when Anandi is starving under the scorching sun?"As Ram Singh stood there confused, scratching his head, suddenly Shiv was ashamed to realize he had lost his temper in front of his subordinates. So he quickly rectified himself, "how could I think of eating when the rest of the village is starving? I must first do something quickly"
He needed to do something to stop the fasting. He dialed the DM's office and made calls to the Chief Minister as well. The Chief Minister was in a meeting and he was asked to wait till the end of the day. Shiv sat in his office without a drop of water till 9 pm till he heard back from the Chief Minister. He had a lengthy conversation and finally left for his home. He did not eat a grain of food that night.
On the other side of the village, Anandi was resting in one of the temporary shelters built by the fasting villagers. Dadisa and the rest of the Singh had tried to convince her and had decided to fast with her in support. But by the end of the hot, scorching day dadisa had fallen sick and Anandi forced Bhairon and Basant to leave with Dadisa. They promised to be back the next morning. Anandi lay in one of the thatched huts and looked at the villagers. Many of them were exhausted just like her, fasting on a burning day. A couple of local newspapers got to know about this fast and they came to cover the story. Anandi hoped the news will reach the bigger media houses fast and their petition will be heard. The villagers should get their rights as soon as possible, she only hoped Shiv had been by her side in this fight.

Night:
Bheem Singh was smoking in the garden when he saw Shiv going out of his bunglow late at night. Surprised he went up to him. "Sir where are you going at the dead of the night?" Bheem Singh asked with amazement. Shiv was extremely embarrassed at being caught. He scolded Bheem "What are you doing till so late at night, why are you not asleep?"
"Sir…who main, I need to smoke before sleeping, I don't get sleep without smoking, but Sir you tell me, where are you going? Do you need anything? Should I get it for you."
Shiv saw no way out from Bheem's intense inquiry, so he finally relented and confessed: "Bheem I was going to see if things are all right among the fasting villagers, I mean they had been fasting all day, I must make sure they are alright."
Bheem Singh looked at his Sir with interest. He could sense a strange restlessness in him that he had never seen before. He knew there was something wrong between Sir and Anandiji but he did not know the exact details. And now seeing Shiv sneak out at the dead of the night to go to the site, Bheem Singh was convinced that it was not only the villagers that Shiv was most worried about. Something told him that it was Anandiji who was the actual reason for this midnight trip. He also knew that Sir had not eaten anything since the fast began. But he dared not ask anything lest Shiv loses his temper again, he has been cranky the whole day. He offered to accompany Shiv to the fields and together they went silently to take a look at the villagers.
People were gathered around small bonfires at the fasting camps. Some of them were singing songs of courage and revolution to keep their spirits up. Shiv's eyes searched for Anandi and could not find her. And finally he spotted her lying down in one of the camps. He let out a heavy sigh and hoped things came back to normal very soon. He could not see Anandi or the villagers paining themselves anymore. He also felt guilty for leaving Anandi's side in this fight of hers. Being near Anandi made him feel the pain of rejection and an intense longing for her, but he decided to dismiss his personal emotions for the greater good they had tried to achieve. "I will never leave Anandi's side again, I will be with her in all her fights" Shiv promised himself.
