Is recusing oneself equal to cowardice?

There are currently three threads on which some parts of the discussion focus on sumitra asking anandi to step down on grounds of a judgement against her family creating tension... and bhairon asking her to continue her duty under all circumstances. Bhairon told her not to be afraid.
So, I'm consolidating that discussion (only that particular aspect) into this one single thread.
The question at hand is "Does recusing oneself equal to cowardice?"
Is it always a commitment to duty that should be considered as 'bravery'?
I mean, there are so many organizations and judicial systems that dont allow family members to arbitrate in matters of family matters because their involvement may prejudice the outcome -- or if swinging to the other extreme of the pendulum the arbitrator may be forced to give a judgement against his/her family to prove their impartiality (because even if the right judgement is given in favour of the family member, everyone will accuse the judge of impartiality).
I personally feel that anandi should have stepped down (not as sarpanch ... but just for this one particular case). I think sumitra was right and that the personal hell that would ensue in the haveli would not be worth the professional gains (if any) in this case. I think Bhairon's view was very idealistic with all that Bhagvad gita talk...and somehow not really relevant to this situation.
He told her not to let fear guide her decisions. I dont think this was a matter of cowardice though.

BHAIRON's advise is quite relevant (vide my post in the thread mentioned by you)

In a panchayat the decision wd b a collective decision of all the five...as soon as the arguments are over just like our judges the 5 discuss & sarpanch voices the judgement(which was not shown in the serial)
Also the decision is never final...both /either can recourse to police case/file a petition in the court..

Now regarding cowardice...
While I appreciate the futile consistency in looking forward to stepping down of Anandi,
I would like to quote of ROBIN SHARMA "The fears you unfaced become your limitations"

Arjuna also behaved like an escapist when he had to take up action (Infact it is Arjuna who opted for fight after the failure of krishna's mediation)

Hence stepping back of Anandi, wd b escapism...NOT cowardice...
As long as villagers & the panchayat(the 5)keep confidence & requests,Anandi to judge the dispute there's no point in stepping back...

Well, i came again to argu with you Tinoo..😛😆

what i think is..Bhairon and Sumitra both were right!!..🤔

For Sumitra peace at home is much more important than rameswar got the salary or not..her job is to take care of the family members, support them and to maintain a peaceful environment at home..so she is thinking like a homemaker, like a sister-in-law who doesn't want to lose or hurt any family members..she thought anandi's judgement can hamper the peace of her family..and yes she was right!! though anandi was neutral at her judgement still gahena and basant r not happy..

but when a person becomes a leader, joins politics..then the village\city or the country becomes the family\home for that person!..
everyone in a village is equal for a sapranch whether they belong from that person's family or not!..it is the main duty of a sarpanch to do what is right only..irrespective of the fact that if any of her family member is at fault! Anandi decided to be a leader..everyone hopes and expects that she will do the justice! i think it would be her weakness if she "herself" stepped back just bcoz her family members r involved in it!! it would be unfair for them who thinks that only anandi can do the justice..🤔 it would be biased if she would stepped back thinking that her family members will be hurt..she should think of her bigger family first..she should think of the society first..this is her job only..

the organisations, which don't allow such judgement when any family member of the judge is involved, such organisations think that in such cases judgement will be biased!!..and most of the time they r right..people become biased when a family member is involved..also, they faces so many kind of pressure like anandi faced!..🤔

in this case it would be better if any of the panch would have said it that as basant and gahena r the family member of anandi then someone else should judge this matter!🤔..then if anandi stepped back it would be fine i think!..but here everyone expected that even if her family members r involved anandi will do the justice..bhairon too expected it and wanted it!!..here bhairon's thinking was not biased toward his family only!..that his family member will be hurt! he wanted the right thing should happen for the welfare of the society they live in!..he encouraged anandi to do the justice and not to stepped back! so i think he was right too!!..

At the time of assuming charge as sarpanch, there will be an oath that she would discharge her duties impartially ... & being unbiased is her DHARMA...
BHAIRON quoted regarding this only...(krishna reminds Arjuna to perform..& adhere to duties(DHARMA) of kshatriya as chosen by Arjuna himself.)
Apart from "karmanyevaadhikarasthe",( " Concentrate on delivering the best of you(irrespective of success or failure) as this is the only way to know about your self ...the more you know about your self(ur potential), the more happy you can be")

another important quote from GITA is "swadharme nidhanam shreyaha...paradharmo bhayavahaha"...(" Better die while you pursue to know about your full potential through your path of duty...If you neglect this principle,as you don't know your potential,,you have to fear treading the path of life ...So whatever the work you have taken up is to explore your full potential, even if it is so tough that you might die,but keep trying,...Once you know about your strength in receiving blows...you can attain success. As success waits outside your comfort zone")
We have to understand GITA before opining about its relevance..

Excellent analysis & well explained...I don't understand why people take Sooo much care n use all their skills in finding fault with Anandi only...really fed up yaar...NO entertainment even during these boredom tracks... Except twisted logics...
Really missing Ankit ...

@sreevask & monamie i completely agree wid u!!!!it wud'd been escapism 4 anandi. and i agree that in Gita thatswhy Lord Krishna made Arjuna understand that 4 performing ur duties u shud b unbiased & think abt wats rite & wrong & not the family members.
there r so many incidents in the medieval India wen sum Kshyatriya(Rajput warriors)didn't want 2 go 2 the war bcoz of not wnating 2 leave their wives or 4 fear of wta wud happen 2 their wives if they got killed & at those times wives made them go by killing themselves 2 perform their duty 2wards their country!!
so Anandi did a gud job as a sarpanch!! she held a gud judgement!!👏👏

Somehow, an approach that interest of village was at premium, fails to make dent and hence don't see any abdication of leadership dues, in case of a discrete delegation of chair to some neutral member (else, do all recused judges become escapists?). The purpose of correcting a reneging employer- this case, with a proven history of community philanthropy and benevolence, as well with an arguably valid reason for contention- can neither be considered an unachievable task by a delegated chair nor be equated with an inescapable social 'threat'. More like a habitual bravado for a serial lead, that Cvs are incurable of..more din and much ado in a child's play...Though yes, I agree with her sound judgement in the end...anyways...let's hear Gehna's music on that bravura comment on Vasant Tauji...

@ stuti
when Anandi recuses by herself,Gehna & our community folk argue that Anandi had stepped out to avoid helping them (remember basant's remarks "hamara Anandi hai na?she knows everything & she can decide"... Also Rameswar too think that she avoided helping him...
Infact if the code of conduct compulses then recuse is a must, otherwise as long as panchayat has a confidence in her she has to perform her duties...
As I already mentioned, she just voices the judgement(which is the collective outcome of The 5 heads),hence the chances of being biased are ruled out.

The flaw lies in
(1) not showing the discussion of 5 heads after the arguements are over..
(2) Anandi shd have convinced basant before panchayat...
.(3) basant shd Hv bn flexible regarding his obligations - both as a paymaster as well as a family member of a joint family...if he is prudent,Gehna need not get a negative stamp..

Hi anust!
ThanQ yaar...really enjoying your cut paste posts.. As I had mentioned above,Gehna's negative shade is due to basant's arrogance as well as Anandi's trespassing into Gehna's obligations...they made her turn negative & r responsible for her bad image..otherwise who would not like Gehna?...Infact everyone is feeling so bad @ her & even cursing CVs for turning her role into negativity...
What can we do? Whatever b the music she had to do it solo..

anandi was perfectly right and the way she delivered justice her way of clearing the fault was good as a sarpanch ,her words were worth to give peace to both sides but gehna is making it big issue and basant he could have faded but here it is that gehna has some other notes in mind tospoil the family not anandi's verdict
