i feel like giving the creatives of Bv a standing ovationnn for daring to show somehting as sensitive as this...trust me guys this custome is still prevellant in many homes may urban homes as well i belong to a quite cosmopoliton family who r not at all orthodox from any standards but this was the case in our home too specially during the earlier years{ie during my grandma's riegn} my mom and my chachi and all had followed all that has been shown stringently coz it were my grand ma's orders it was only in our generatio we sisters who rebelled against all dis nonsense u won't believe we weren't even allowed to touch our grandma coz she used ot do a lot of pooja and all that and she believed that even touching a girl who is in her periods would make her impure and u know if bychance we used to touch her then she wld openly tell infront of everyone that why we touched her and the whole fmaily owuld get to know that one of us were in periods it used to get so dammed embaresssing at times but she wasn't orthodox in any other sense only when it came to this particular area she lost all logic she was of the opinion that during this time a girl secretes lot of impurities so how ca she touch god's idol or anything related to mandir and temple when she is not clean? it was as simple as the fact that we all do pooja oly after bathing so that we r clean enough to stand infront of the pure aura of god....yes even i believe in avoiding to go to the temple during these days but beyod this i don't believe in naything else coz i feel if i start believing all dis i myself am giving the world an opportunity to distinguish between the two sexes....u know dis all was so cruel in the earlier days and even today its so dammed prevellant everywhere...i personally know a lady who was prohibited to see her only dying husband onelast time coz the she was in periods...gosh imagine the crueality of people how cna u prevent a wife form paying her last respects to her husband??..... its helll unfair and am just so dammed overwhelmed that Bv decided to show all this ad to educate people tha there is nothing untouchable or inauspicious in it...damm it this is the prime reason why a girl cna concieve and not a guy...how the hell can it be somehtig of disgust...seriously hats off to BV and to anadi sumitra and sughna and gahna who enacted this all so dammed well eve dadisa did her part welll her cruelty wld actually make people realize how cruel they themselves get to their ow sisters and daughters and daughter in laws and wives....

There was once a woman who loved her mom's pot-roast. While visiting her old mother she wanted to learn the recipe to the pot roast. She noticed that her mother would cut of the two edges of the meat before setting it to roast in the oven. She wondered why that was important and asked her mother. Her mother wasn't sure too and said she always made it that way since her mother used to make it the same way. So the woman went to her grand-mother and asked her why she cut the edges off the meat. The grand-mother had no idea too and said her mother did the same. The woman then went to her very old great-grand mother and asked her why she cut off the edges of her meat. The old lady was puzzled and replied she did that cause her baking pot was too small for big pieces of meat!!! So you see, a sensible solution to a problem faced ages ago was passed along to generations and was followed without rhyme or reason.

This whole women and periods has been passed on over generations without real explanation. And of coarse any custom that has no logical explanation was termed as "religious belief". In olden days, the 3 days were really meant to give women a break from back-breaking house-chores and also they were confined to sit at home in a room so as to not contaminate places they went to (since they didn't have products back then to keep the whole process "clean") But of coarse, this has turned out to be such a religious no-no when it was not even related to religion to begin with!

What do I know, I am a part atheist-part realist who thinks if God created me a woman and meant for me to have periods, he/she won't mind me visiting his shrines or praying to him and partake in any activities that I can

But the reasons were good enough in the beginning, the intentions were right. But as is with most things concerning most religions the reasons and logic behind are lost and only the practices remain without any understanding.

WHY?

Very simple, during menstruation body goes through a change. Any one with a decent high school education knows that there are various hormones secreted at various stages of the cycle. And we emanate these from the pores of our skins at all times in varying %. During a period the hormones released have an adverse reaction on foods like pickles etc., and hence women were not asked to touch them.

Also with the loss of bodily fluids women are slightly more tired etc. And some suffer from pains in the lower back, pain in the thighs, back of the knees, stomach abdomen etc.

When women were asked to confine themselves to a room and stay there till their period is over, it was meant as rest not as any stigma. But the meaning was somehow lost in translation.

I would gladly sit in a room for 3 days not having to do anything when I have my period. I get severe back pain, but I still have to run the house.

There are still communities in India (albeit in small remote villages) where they have a common house for women who have periods. The women really have a good time as they don't have to fetch water from miles, get wood, cook, clean etc.

It is not all bad, as long as one remembers the real reasons or tries to figure out what could be the reason...

Sorry for the long post, but had to say something...

I found that to be very informative. I agree, I wish I could take the time to rest like that, but I have a household to run. Thank you very much! 👏

hi there,

ohn the whole, i found ur post informative, but i wish to correct you of the thing above, the hormones released during the menstruation cycle, has nothing to do with the hormones released through the skin on the hands, so doesn't spoil food in any way at all. And secondly hormones are secreted from the pores on the face, and can result in spots, this seems to increase during periods. But the hormones are completely different. so there is no need to not touch food.

I wish to provide an Islamic POV, being a mislim. In Islam when on period, one is just not allowed to pray five times a day, or touch the holy book. however, nothing with serving food, or anything to do with food is being stopped, but i am aware these pratices do occur in the pakistani culture, which for the record is totally wrong. People like to invent things to be against women, and support the misogynist society we live in, and in the end blame it on islam, and for the record, history proves that Islamic POV was never again women, it's the western POV, which is regarded women as the reason of all evil, and since our culture is from Pakistan, which has it's roots from India, which was onle rules by Britain, that's where the corruption of religion comes from, and parts of our so called culture, but the British were be able to go past it, but some parts of our culture is still stuck in that time zone.

Anywaaaay, sorry for going in a big rant here, i just like cultures blaming anything on religion. also just wanted to point out where this misogynist POV came from. No harm intented towards anyone, if anyone got offended, i apologise.

Ok from my experience we hindus still follow the not going to temple part and not entering puja rooms at your home when you have your periods. To be honest this hasn't bothered me that much, I just follow it because I was told when I was young and it just stuck with me.

But the more you think about it. This topic is worthy of discussion because what is the point of this. My music teacher when I was young was a Brahmin and when I had my periods, she asked me to stay out of her puja room. I was slightty baffled and watched her other students perform the puja. Felt a bit left out. But I came to terms with it.

I guess the point I am trying to make is. Woman shouldn't be prejudiced against because of this, like not touching or cooking are just silly to me. But something more religious like going to a temple still resonates with traditionalists, whether or not this is unfair is for each family to decide for themselves.

well, this practice has reasonings.though now most people just blindly follow it....
As said above, asking a girl, not to leave her room.....was solely for the purpose of giving her rest...... she can do what ever she wants in her room.... read books, see tv, sleep, browse on net...anything........and she she doesn't have to do any house hold work.... everything is brought to her....
Now the second part of not going to temple or puja room...... Usually, a puja room or a temple.is a place, where we can connect with God.......the place provides us peace. When u r having ur periods, lots of hormones are released.and some of these hormones are responsible for mood swings..... I don't know, if u have noticed.but during periods...we tend to get angry easily....tend to feel downcast.without any reason... In normal times, the only way any body fluid can come out is thru ur skin as sweat......don't know if sweat contains hormones but blood surely contains...........so usually girls are adviced not to go to puja room or temple....cos they don't want more of this hormones in the air.so that, people comming there do not have to face mood swings...... and a divine atmosphere is maintained there.
it is never that, god doesn't want u to be there or not...or that God doesn't want u to pray when u have periods.... i have locket of GOd, in my chain.and i do not keep it aside or something...when i am having periods.it stays with me all the time and i can pray in my room...

Hello all

I am glad that people are coming up with varying viewpoints...I want to add a few things...

Someone mentioned poojas are performed when the girl matures – I have definitely seen it in South India. It is a celebration of a girl arriving into womanhood. Family is supposed to be happy that nature has taken its due course and perform a pooja thanking God for her fertility and celebrate. But nowadays it is done for all the wrong reasons…

Prayer/pooja rooms are meant for worship and always used to be kept clean and pleasantly decorated with flowers, incense etc to give an atmosphere of peace and tranquility. Please do remember there were no sanitary napkins leave alone tampons. Cotton, old rags etc were used, very primitive ways which were bound to cause accidents and hence not to come to pooja rooms etc. – in fact as I had mentioned earlier, confined to one room! Again lost in translation!

Re hormones – one way or the other it has not been proved or disproved that menstrual toxins (menotoxins) don't cause problems. It happens in some women and it doesn't in others. We emanate from each and every part of our body, due to the presence of oil glands etc in certain parts of the body we get noticeable acne etc.

When I was in school I questioned my mum about food spoiling, and we experimented with making a small quantity of pickle. I would mix the mango pieces and the masala with my hand when I have my period – 3 out of 4 tests the pickle didn't last (I have made pickles many a time since and they do last ;-)). I am not saying this is proof, but there might be something about touching certain foods. My friend – if she touches fresh cut flowers when she has her period, they wouldn't last more than a couple of days – she swears by it and I do believe her cause I have seen it myself (and she is my best friend lol)!

I am a Hindu by birth which is my identity but I am an atheist as in I don't practice any religion and a pantheist as I believe God is in everything. I don't go to any holy place when I have my period – not because I believe I will contaminate but I know there are others who do and I try and respect their wish – small compromise. If I am not mistaken Zoroastrian faith also has something similar and I heard it in London too, women will not touch dough for bread etc. Who knows?

Cheers
