[Episode 93] June 22nd, 2016
- Okay. So that first shot of Shaan and Rajni on the bed in the morning. What is that shot, even? The room is so pristine, the piano music is so lovely...and Rajni is on the bed, leaning back, watching Shaan, who is asleep all sprawled out on the mattress. I think Rajni actually rises from the mattress in order to sit up better...? Hints of sensuality in the way she moves...To the uninitiated, this could totally look like a "morning after" of another kind...It's so beautifully shot! And Karan and Ridhima both look gorgeous.
- Rajni walks over to sit closer to Shaan on the bed...leans down to speak into his ear..."Shaan?" Her voice is so melodious, her tone somewhere between a question and a wake-up call. Groggily, he opens his eyes. "Mmm..." "Good morning!" "Morning ho gayi? Morning." The little nuances of intimacy between them are so beautifully and so naturally shown - Rajni hovering over Shaan, brushing her hair across his face lightly, reaching across his chest with a hand on his arm as she tries to wake him up, as a wife would...Shaan drowsily mumbling and licking his lips before turning towards her, not wanting to get up just yet...They're so close together and their comfort in each other's presence is such a far cry from the awkwardness between them on their actual wedding night.
- I love how Rajni tells Shaan that he did indeed do something crazy the night before. That wakes him up, haha. "Kya?" She nods. "What crazy? Matlab...Kiske saath?! Kaise?!" LOL, Shaan. The way this guy's mind works! He never does crazy things - so what happened last night? Rajni just blinks at him, teasingly, knowingly. "Rajni, don't blink, tell me." More coy blinks...and a smile. Uff!
- Dhyaan and Sharmila find their "unromantic" Shaan Bhaiyya and Rajni Bhabhi locked in a sort of romantic position on the bed. Shaan doesn't seem bothered by his proximity to Rajni until Dhyaan clears his throat and announces that they're not alone anymore. Dhyaan doesn't look very surprised at all, haha. He seems so smug about the whole thing, actually. "And by the way, subah ho gayi hai. You can take a break." Dhyaan's face while Rajni is telling Shaan that the others should know what happened last night - he just keeps looking at his brother with a sort of "Bhaiyya! I didn't know you had it in you!" expression, haha. Amazing. This guy is so cheeky and totally unapologetic about it!
- The ShaJni tattoo is fantastic. I love the design! Whoever came up with this - it's brilliant! A little robot with a heart on top of the "h", a cog on top of the "j", and feathers on either end of the portmanteau...I want this on a poster. Also, how sweet is it that Shaan got this tattoo done while inebriated? Rajni has left her mark on him in so many ways already, internally...But this, this is for everyone to see. And Shaan was the one who did it.
- Random aside. Matthew showing up at Shaan's door just to announce his arrival and that Shaan has two hours left before he has to deliver the robot. Wow. Couldn't have called him on the phone? But I thought it was pretty great how Shaan avoids a potentially sticky situation by simply saying that he can't let Matthew into the room because... "Woh meri...wife..." That sideways glance towards the interior of the room - nice, Shaan. Nice!
- Rajni has two hours to find a perfect wife for Shaan. Oh, Rajni. When will her logic help her reach the conclusion that SHE is the perfect wife for Shaan? She is Rajni Kant! And she's the only one who can keep up with the sort of lifestyle that Shaan Kant leads. She loosens him up, makes him do things that he's never dared to do before in his entire life...And their lives are intertwined. Just like that tattoo on his arm. Shaan + Rajni. ShaJni.
- The Ex is a lawyer. A divorce lawyer? She deals with problematic relationships on a regular basis, but she believes that not all men are philanderers. Not all men are like that...because she knew one who was loyal. "Mr. Shantanu Kant. Mr. Loyal...No! Mr. Genius! Pata nahi kya kar raha hoga, paagal..." Samaira's expressions are interesting in this bit. When she says Shaan's name, there's almost a hardness, a bitterness, maybe, in her voice and eyes. That softens as she recalls how loyal he was...And then suddenly her eyebrows shoot up along with her tone. "No! Mr. Genius!" That's what he was. A genius who was always more loyal to his robot than he was to her. That paagal is STILL loyal to his robot, Samaira. That paagal now has a wife. And guess who that wife is? Rajni Kant.
- Dhyaan, ever the devoted devar, wants to take his bhabhi shopping. Rajni asks Shaan if she can take his wallet with her...He snatches it back. Something he doesn't want her to see? A photo, perhaps? Rajni and Shaan reminded me of a typical married couple here, the husband reluctant to let his wife go and spend his money on clothes and whatnot, the wife disapprovingly giving her husband that look...Haha! Rajni just stares at Shaan silently for quite a while. And then, wait for it..."You cheapo!" "Achha, le jaao! Drama queen!"
- Shaan bids Rajni goodbye by returning her peppy wave in silence. He lets her hi-five him, even. But he doesn't say anything. "Yeh last 'Bye bye bye!' honewaali hai, Rajni...Kaash last ke yeh kuch pal tumhare saath bitaa paata. Kaash tum yeh sad feeling samajh paati...Ab tumhe dismantle karne ka time aa gaya." It's starting to sink in slowly now. The countdown begins. Shaan is back to talking to himself, as if Rajni is there beside him when she's really not there. Is this how he used to live his life before she was activated? He seems so quiet, so lonely already. There's already a melancholy yearning in his tone. If only you were here with me. If only you could understand how I feel. If only...if only you didn't have to leave me...
- This wallet is important, that's for sure. As of now, it presents a conflict to Rajni, that of ethics and logic. She shouldn't open it without Shaan's permission, right? But as his wife, doesn't she have a right to do so? As someone close to him, does she have the right to go delving into his past? Would he want her to do this? He said that he doesn't need anyone besides Rajni to take care of him. But when Rajni leaves...what then? Would that change his answer?
Meanwhile at the Kant residence...
- Shogata Kant, from miserably shocked bride to extremely reluctant wife...I never thought I'd see the day when she'd be ironing a man's shirts at home! But here she is, unhappily ironing away at Dev's many plaid shirts! Her little lament reminds me of what Dev had said while putting his stuff into her almari, actually. It fascinates me that they speak in very similar ways, with similar phrases. In the next scene, Dev calls Shogu a "good girl" much in the same way that she used to call Matthew a "good boy." Dev and Shogata are more similar than they think...
- "Mann toh kar raha hai...uss Bangdu ko iss shirt mein daal ke iron kar doon!" She's fuming inside. Steaming, more likely! This is my favorite line from this scene, hands down. Neha says it so cutely and I love the way her voice rises in pitch on those last few words, conveying Shogu's mounting irritation. Awww, poor baby! And yet she still keeps ironing.
- Surili is completely baffled when she finally finds her daughter after searching the whole house. Ironing THAT Dev's shirts? "...Why?!?!" Shogu narrates her tale of woe and ends with a sigh. "WDID?" "...Dekho, Shogu...Jabhi bhi tum takleef mein ho, na, toh short form mein baat mat karo. Warna humein pata nahi chalega ki tumhari takleef kya hai. Right? Problem solve hi nahi hogi?" Ahahaha, I love Surili's reaction so much! This mother-daughter duo is SO adorable when they're not plotting against the other women *cough* Rajni *cough* in the house. When they're trying to deal with Shogu's own problems and her terrible married life, they're so endearing and entertaining! I am forever impressed with how Pallaviji and Neha are like two women cut from the same cloth. Appearance, tone, facial expressions, everything is on point and it feels like it comes effortlessly to both of them! When it comes to actors portraying family members in a show, this is the best casting decision I've ever seen. Major props to the team for this!
- WDID. Translation? "What do I do?" Ummm. Nothing. Sorry, Shogu. I can't believe she's STILL hung up on "her Matty" who doesn't give a damn about her! Surili can't believe it, either. "Shogu! You stupid girl! Jo ladka tumhari har demand poori kare, zaroori nahi woh tumse pyaar karta, OK?! Aise tum khush nahi rahogi!" "I don't care, Mom! Life mein agar rona hi hai, toh kisi bungle mein roon! Kisi one-bedroom flat mein nahi!" Ah, this scene is wonderful. For perhaps the first time, a difference in their mentalities comes to light. Surili, for all her complaining about Amrish, genuinely loves him and it has been hinted that she married him for love, disregarding status, and that she believed in him enough to help him grow as a person and as a businessman. She has a good head on her shoulders in this respect. Money cannot buy happiness. Shogata's view is different. If she's going to marry someone who doesn't love her, she might as well be comfortable for the rest of her life while being miserable on the inside. The particular words she uses here stood out to me..."Life mein agar rona hi hai..." And that begs the question...did Shogata actually love Matthew?
- Shogu has lost out on a chance to expand on the status, prestige, and material comforts that she has probably grown up with all her life...She takes all this for granted, it seems...She's devastated that she had a chance to maintain that lifestyle and lost out on it because of Dev. While watching this scene, I wondered if Dev's house is essentially the "one-bedroom flat" that Shogu refers to here in an offhand manner. Is it literally a one-bedroom flat in a run-down community? If she ever has to go and live with him there, how will she cope? Would seeing Dev in that sort of environment increase her regard for him and for the people who lead such hard lives in general? That is something I would really, really like to see.
- "Shogata ko hi kuch karna padega." Shogu's smile is devilishly sweet. She's got a plan. "Aye, Bangdu!" She throws out that name curtly, throws his clothes down on Shaan's bed carelessly, and turns to leave. So that's where Dev has been sleeping? Or is he just spending time there because it's Shaan-Rajni's room? "Aye! Izzat se baat karo, warna...! Tum jaanti ho!" Her body language changes. So does her voice. Shogata reaches down to presumably fix the pile of clothes with a smile that is saccharine-sweet. "Aapke kapde." So cute, haha! Dev is happy with that, but not happy enough. He provokes her again, and the real Shogu is back for a fleeting moment before she checks herself and her temper once more. With a smile and a servant-like curtsy, she leaves. Forced to make food for the Bhukkad...but she's got an ace up her sleeve.
- Poor Dev! Everyone notices his wardrobe malfunction and he has no clue at all! Shogu sends her mom a smirk over her teacup...and then tries and fails to hold her laughter in. I love that wide shot of everyone at the table, in which Shogu is shaking with suppressed, silent laughter, her head in her hands. Bhukkad Bangdu is between a rock and a hard place today! He's teased by everyone except Amrish, who takes a picture of Dev's new fashion and thankfully shows it to his temporary damaad. I love Amrish Kant! He's the best! How many times will I say this? I'm never going to stop saying it, it seems! What a gem of a man!
- "Dhobi ke paas jaa..." Oh, I love the silent communication going on between Dev-Shogata in this bit! Amrish advises Dev to go to the "dhobi" who did such a terrible job ironing those pants...Dev glares at the dhobi in question, who is sitting next to her father and looking mighty pleased with herself. "Too bad, Bangdu!" she seems to say. Dev speaks through gritted teeth. "Uss dhobi se toh main jawaab maang kar rahoonga!" And the dhobi answers, all sarcastic sweetness. "Woh kya hai, na...Free mein kaam karwaaoge...toh aisa hi hoga!" She raises her eyebrows at him, in a challenge. "Got an answer to that, Bangdu?" He doesn't.
- Dev turns tail and edges out of the dining room. Today has gotten off to a pretty awful start for him. Shogata looks like she's having the time of her life. She shakes her head at him, smiling. And she watches him leave, her eyes sparkling with mischief, mirth...and a hint of vindictiveness. "Yeh toh sirf shuruaat hai, Bangdu..." I love this girl. Truly. There's something about her...
