Physician Assistant Day, or PA Day, is a celebration of those who assist doctors in their work. This important event, begun by the American Academy of Physicians' Assistants, aims to raise awareness of the PA profession, and inform people about healthy living.

Physician assistants are less high-profile and glamorous than doctors themselves, but the work that they do is essential for the smooth running of hospitals and performing of healthcare.

Many medical establishments are in need of more people to enter the profession, and one of the main aims of PA Day is to get this message across, encouraging people to consider assistance as a career.

The main celebration takes place on Rockefeller Plaza in New York. You can join in by being there on the day, arranging an event to raise awareness at your local hospital or social hub.

Mad Hatter Day celebrates the Mad Hatter, from Alice In Wonderland. The original picture of the Mad Hatter by John Tenniel in Alice's Adventures In Wonderland (more commonly known as Alice In Wonderland, by Lewis Caroll) always depicts him wearing a hat, bearing the note "In This Style 10/6. Although we know this is really an order from the time the picture was drawn to mean a hat in that style cost 10 Shillings and Sixpence, we take this as inspiration to act in the style of the Mad Hatter on 10/6 (In the UK this would point to the tenth of June, but as the day was founded in America it is the 6th of October).

History

In 1986 some computer-folk in Boulder, CO celebrated a general day of silliness, inspired by the drawings of the Mad Hatter by John Tenniel in Alice In Wonderland. It was announced that year on computer networks, becoming more popular as people realised its value some people did less damage by celebrating silliness than if they had done their jobs.

In 1988 it was first recognised as an official holiday and received its first national press coverage.

"Mad as a hatter is a colloquial phrase used in conversation to refer to a crazy person. In 18th and 19th century England mercury was used in the production of felt, which was used in the manufacturing of hats. People who worked in these hat factories were exposed daily to trace amounts of the metal, causing some workers to develop dementia caused by mercury poisoning. Thus, the phrase became popular as a way to refer to someone who was perceived as insane.

Noodles come in many varieties, and National Noodle Day, which is observed each year on October 6, recognizes them all.

The word noodle derives from the German word nudel.

Noodles are made by rolling unleavened dough out and cutting into a variety of shapes. While long, flat noodles may seem to be the most common, they come in a variety of forms, names, and textures. Each kind of noodle will pair differently with different kinds of sauces and meals.

Found in regions all over the world, noodles are made from a variety of flours. In Asian cuisine, root vegetables, such as yams and potatoes, beans, rice, wheat, and buckwheat are all found in a wide assortment of noodles. Europeans make most of their pasta from durum or semolina flour, though potato noodles a enjoyed as well.

In 2002, archaeologists along the Yellow River in China found an earthenware bowl containing some 4000-year-old noodles which had been well preserved.
