Director Nagesh Kukunoor gets vocal while elaborating about his upcoming film that is based on prostitution " a real story of a girl from Andhra Pradesh
You've been in and out of Hyderabad on a regular basis...
Yes, that's true. I keep coming to Hyderabad often because my parents are here. In fact, every other week, I'm here and probably will be in the city in the coming weekend too. I was here a couple of days back for the shooting of my upcoming film, Lakshmi. We shot at Charminar, then Old City and also in Begumpet. A few sequences were also shot on the outskirts of the city near Shamshabad.
Moreover, I've a lot of friends, including my best friend, in Hyderabad. So, there is a good reason to come down, gorge on some home cooked food and Hyderabadi delicacies and then head back to Mumbai. It's kind of a holiday for me.
Your next film Lakshmi is on 'sex workers', which is a sensitive issue.Wasn't it a risky decision to make a film on prostitution?
This film is really close to my heart. There's an NGO in Ongole, where I worked and have seen lot of victims of trafficking, sexual exploitation and how they are rehabilitated. While interacting with them, I came across many amazing stories, some of which are horrifying in nature. Women face hell-like situation and still come out so strong. Taking all that into consideration, I crafted a script which is a true story based on a girl from Andhra Pradesh.
She was rescued from trafficking and after she came out, she took the traffickers to the court and won. Singer-actress Monali Thakur, who plays the lead role, is an amazing actress. I had spotted her at a party and in my first meet, I was clear that I wanted to cast this girl in the lead role, as she could pass off as a 14-year-old character easily. And she did after the audition. I feel it's a terrific choice.
Talking about the film based on a very sensitive topic, for me, the story has to be appealing and such stories have a powerful impact. I'm not concerned about anything and anybody. And in Lakshmi's case, I can say it was a personal quest for me as I believed in the character passionately and wanted to put a spotlight on her.
Most of your films highlight real life issues and incidents. You don't want to venture into commercial cinema? For me, the story is central. The heroism in the story and real life films are hundred times more fascinating and interesting than fiction. But yes, you get to put everything in an entertaining format for the audience and when I say entertaining, it doesn't really mean dancing or jumping, but in many others forms. A few of my films have been commercial. It depends on what the script demands. There are certain stories which don't require big names. Maybe in that way, my films are not commercial. Everyone can't make the same kind of films, somebody has to be different. You should make movies you believe in and I feel I've a different genre and I'm happy in that space.
Your last outing was Mod in 2011, and Lakshmi is set for release next year. Can we say it's a comeback? (Laughs) The release of a film is based on market condition and thus, sometimes, the gap between two films is two years and at times, more than that. It's difficult to predict. It doesn't mean I was doing nothing. I was busy writing scripts and have been active doing lot of other stuff.
Being a pucca Hyderabadi, any plans to direct a Telugu film sometime in future? Nothing in Telugu on the horizon so far, but may be some day for sure. Right now my whole energy is going on promoting Lakshmi, editing the film and lots of other work.
