I am an impulsive buyer of shoes: Ratna Sinha
by Vidhya Krishnan
Dec 22, 2008, Bangalore

There is no doubt that money plays an important part in everyone's life. And celebs are known as much for the bundles they earn as anything else. Is it the same with TV stars? For our Tellywatch column on money, producer Ratna Sinha shared her thoughts on money and more.

How important is money to you?
It is quite important but the most important thing for me is peace. More than its importance, it is about how you balance it and that applies not just to money but to everything. And only that way can one live peacefully.

How do you handle your expenses?
My company handles most of my expenses. I have very few personal expenses like travelling and some day-to-day stuff. I don't go for big buys.

How good are you at saving?
Not at all good! I love the idea of saving but somehow manage not to save anything.

Are you a spendthrift?
It depends – at times I get into buying a lot of things and sometimes don't. It all depends on my mood and I don't define it as a characteristic.

Are you an impulsive buyer?
Absolutely! Especially while buying shoes.

What do you spend the most amount of money on?
I spend a lot on my son and husband.

At what age did you start earning and what did you do with your first salary?
I started at the age of 22. I must have bought gifts for my family with my first salary.

How much money do you carry with you every day?
I use cards mostly and don't carry too much money.

What is your best purchase till date?
My home sweet home!

One tip as far as spending money is concerned…
Don't think too much about spending; just do it if you want to.

Keep checking back at this space as we bring you more thoughts from your favourite TV stars.

Shubh out of Babul ka Aangan

Siddharth Shukla, who plays Shubh in Babul ka Aangan will no longer stay a part of the show as his character will die in the show in Monday's episode.

Sources on the sets of the show claimed that the actor had been "throwing tantrums since quite some time now." Asked what kind of tantrums these were, the source said: "He's also
been demanding a hike in his fees and it was too much for the producers." Confronted with this, the creative head of the show, Raahat acknowledged the parting of ways. "We had some date issues with Siddharth, he would come late to the sets and would not give us the required time. There were even times when we had to use dummies in his
absence".

Raahat said that some changes in the script had been planned which also fell into place with Siddharth's leaving. "When we introduced Swayam's character as a thriller element in Babul, it worked very well," Raahat said, "so the channel has asked us to focus on this track and not so much on that of Shubh, which in the new story line does not have much importance."

For his part, Siddharth said that he had "decided to opt out of the show, as the story was not too convincing to me." He said he had decided this "ever since Shubh's character turned grey. I demanded a change and now that I know that it's not happening, I'm off."

Asked whether the accusations of his unprofessionalism were true, he said: "This is not true at all. I have always been on time and given extra time when required." He said he would miss the show and his costars and would remain in touch with them. Though he played lead in this show, which is on Sony, Siddharth has no other show on air at the moment.

Vikas Sethi to enter Babul ka Aangan

With Shubh's character turning negative, Babul ka Aangan has a lot to offer. Vikas Sethi too will be entering the show as a suspense element.

"Vikas will come in as Aastha's saviour. His character is full of intrigue and suspense. He enters as a person who pretends to be Swayam and puzzles the entire family too. It is only Aastha who has very strong belief that he's not Swayam and she hates him," informs the show's producer Ratna Sinha.

Currently Shubh who suspects that his wife Aastha is carrying Swayam's child is trying hard to kill the child. Today's episode will show Vikas's entry when Shubh tries to kill Aastha and Vikas enters as Swayam to save Aastha.

Raahat, the Creative Head, explains the sequence to us. "Shubh is having a conversation with someone in a room and suddenly the lights go off and there's a shuffling of the characters. When the lights come back, Aastha and Swayam are shown where Aastha realizes that somebody has murdered Shubh".

This sequence brings an end to Shubh's character and a new character in the name of Swayam then emerges. So will Shubh come back after some while?

"No. I don't think so but you never know," says Ratan.

Siddharth too is uncertain about his come back in the show. "It all depends on the production house and the channel. If there's a change in the story line, Shubh might come back," he replies.

Raahil Azam too is said to enter the show in three weeks. Till then Vikas would continue to fool Swayam's family and the viewers by playing Swayam.

Stars pick their highlights of 2008

Considering the terror attacks of 26/11, 2008 has been a traumatic year for all of us. But each of us have also enjoyed some special moments. We ask telly stars to pick their highlight of 2008.

Sara Khan
This year is very special for me as I met Ali. He is the most important person in my life. I thank God truly that I met him.

Reshmi Ghosh
I got Nach Baliye. Ever since Nach has begun, I've realized that it's a dream come true for me. God has been very kind to us and got us so far, I don't want to miss this opportunity and want to work harder for it. I think being a part of Nach reminds me of my success that has led to Nach.

Aastha Chaudhary
I think for all of us the highlight of this year would be 26/11 that traumatized the whole country. That is something we all will never forget throughout our lives.

Barkha Bisht
It has to be my marriage without any doubt! This year has been very hectic for me in terms of work; I wish to work less in the coming year as I feel I've over worked a lot in 2008.

Shilpa Shinde
I don't know whether this is a positive thing or a negative one. But my highlight would be that in this year I got great shows like Waaris and Maayka which worked wonders for me. Par December mein Waaris band ho gaya aur maine apne liye Maayka ko band kar diya.

Rahil to bring twist in the tale

Though Vikas Sethi is introduced in Babul Ka Aangan as Swayam, there are chances of Rahil Azam aka the old Swayam coming back to the show.

Rahil Azam played the character Swayam in Babul… Few months ago, he made an exit from the show with the death of his character. Vikas Sethi has recently entered the show as Swayam. As per the current story, Swayam had escaped death and returns with a new face after a plastic surgery.

A source from the production house informed, "The production house is trying to get Rahil back to the show. TRPs showed a rise when the track was focused on him. Since Rahil is already committed to an upcoming show on another channel he is unable to give his time to Babul… Due to this, Vikas Sethi was brought in as Swayam. Rahil is still trying to sort out his dates for Babul… If he manages to do so, the story will have another twist. Rahil will prove that he is the real Swayam and the other Swayam, i.e. Vikas Sethi, is only faking to be so. In case, Rahil does not return to the show Vikas will continue to play Swayam and then there will be no twist."

Rahil says, "Nothing is yet finalised. I would love to be a part of Babul… once again as I had a great experience working for this show. I am trying to sort out my dates. Once the shoot for my other show begins, I will be able to decide whether I can do Babul… or not. I never take up work for the heck of it. I prefer to give my best to everything I do. That is the reason why my work was appreciated in Babul… and I even received an award for my performance. If I return to this show, I want to give as much amount of commitment and dedication as I gave earlier."

Till he takes the final call, all we can do is wait and watch!

Siddharth on life after Babul Ka Aangan…

Change of actors is nothing new in the world of television. Like we flip channels, actors change serials and loyalties. While in some a plastic surgery resulting from an accident is the reason, others rely on a plain and simple announcement that their hero has changed. The latest victim of this is Siddharth Shukla, better known as Shubh Ranawat in Babul Ka Aangan Choote Na. His character died an untimely death in the show and there are multiple reasons being cited for that.

Stories doing rounds in the industry circles say that Shukla's tantrums on the set had become impossible to tolerate with and his personal demands for acting in the serial were also skyrocketing. The producers were left with little choice but to show him the door. Tellychakkar spoke to the actor himself to find out what went wrong.

"These stories are completely untrue. Even yesterday I got a call from the spot boy and the assistant director of the show to tell me how much they are missing me. If I was throwing tantrums on the sets and everyone was upset with me, why would they call me to chat and enquire about my health?" says Shukla denying the allegations completely. "Think of it logically – why would I do something like this? Today people know me just because of my character – Shubh Ranawat."

According to Shukla, the real reason for him quitting the show is something completely different. "My character started of as a positive one and slowly was developing grey shades, toeing to the demands of the script. This is something I was not feeling very comfortable with. I had highlighted this to the creative team of the serial and even had separate meetings with them."

But Siddharth Shukla's suggestion was not accepted. "The decision to add the thriller angle to Babul Ka Aangan.. was taken by the broadcasters and the producers. Being an actor, there is only a limit up to which I can influence the script. A serial that started off as a story highlighting how a wife balances her duties to her parents and in-laws, has become a thriller now! I was just not comfortable with this transformation. As such, the only option left to me was to part ways amicably. And that is what I did."

Shukla is aware that the decision to quit the show will make his fans upset, but he feels they will understand the reasons that made him take this decision. "I am enjoying my break now after having worked continuously for more than a year. I am doing regular workouts and trying to tone my body further. In the last one year my body has suffered a lot!" says the handsome actor when asked about what he is doing after quitting Babul Ka Aangan…"I am waiting for the right project and am not in a hurry. I am ready to do daily soaps and reality shows – don't have any qualms about doing either," says the interior designer-turned-model-turned-actor.

Babul Ka Aangan in trouble

The show that began well is now facing spurts of bad time. With one bad news after another Babul Ka Aangan may find it difficult to stay afloat.

Following in the footsteps of lead actor Siddharth Shukla who is now out of Babul Ka Aangan, the protagonist Aastha Chaudhary and parallel lead Itishree Singh are also quitting the show. Yet another piece of news that will come as a disappointment for Babul… fans is that there are chances of the show going off air.

Every thing went well with Babul Ka Aangan until the strike happened. Post the strike there have been some hiccups with the story being revamped, TRPs declining and Siddharth Shukla saying good bye to the show.

A reliable source informs, "Siddharth Shukla, Aastha Chaudhary and Itishree Singh have quit the show one after the other in line. After Siddharth, Itishree decided to leave the show and now even Aastha is quitting. A search for Aastha's replacement has already begun. Babul… is even tipped to go off air."

Aastha Chaudhary says, "Yes, I am quitting Babul... The reason is that I am not happy with the current track. I don't know where the story is going. I am in the profession of acting because it is my interest and not just for monetary gains. It is very important for me to be satisfied with what I am doing."

Producer Ratna Sinha said, "I have no idea about Aastha leaving the show or about the show going off air."

Despite repeated attempts to contact EVP and Business Head of Sony, Albert Almeida, he remained unavailable for his statement.

After Siddharth, Aastha to quit Babul?

After Siddharth Shukla, who played the male lead in Babul ka Aangan on Sony TV, leaving the show, news now suggests that Aastha Choudhary too has decided to do something similar.

"The story line now is not convincing. Babul started off pretty well but slowly it took some other track… ek aisa track jo original concept se kahin door hai," says Aastha who is not very happy with the way things are going.
But the production house says that they know nothing about heir lead wanting to leave the show.

"Aastha can't quit as she is lead. We've given her break and she will never decide on some thing like that. She hasn't spoken to us about her exit and is still shooting," says an official.

But according to Aastha, she has already spoken to the producer Ratna Sinha. "I've spoken to Ratna and most probably the track would get back to how it was earlier," she says, "Babul is my first show and I will always remain attached to it. If I leave I will miss everything about it. I share a great equation with Itishree, Navni ji and Siddharth (who has now left the show) and will miss them for sure," replies Aastha sadly.

There are also rumors that Itishree aka Shilpa who shot last in December has also left but the production house cleared the air about that too.

"She is there but her character for the time being has been minimized. She will be got back when required," says the official.

Siddharth Shukla who played Shubh was asked to leave the show after he began to throw tantrums on the sets.
